How Long Do Augmentin Side Effects Last? (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Firstly a disclaimer, if you have just eaten and have a soft stomach, avoid this post. You've been warned.

My dentist prescribed a two week regime of Augmentin for minor work that needs to be performed on a tooth. I finished the prescription one week ago. And I still have some odd side effects.

Before I started taking this, I had a normal energy level where I could exercise and do my work, etc. Now I have wayyyyyy too much energy and even though I start to feel drowsy at my regular time when I got to bed, I can't fall asleep until 2 -3 hours later.

The other effect I've been experiencing are dry lips. This is annoying. There is no change in saliva and my mouth is just as moist as before taking Augmentin.

Also during the last three weeks it's been as my appetite has been suppressed, but now it has returned with a vengeance where I eat more a lot. It would be equivalent to opening the flood gates on a dam.

Here's the disgusting part.

I've noticed that the color of my feces has changed from a light brown to an extremely dark brown.

Other than that I've been taking a probiotic three times a day, which I started two days ago. And eating Greek yougurt.

So I would like to know, is it common for side effects to last after taking Augmentin? How long will they last? And if you have any ideas on this, please let me know.

I took ugumentine for 10 days which I have stopped for about 2 weeks now but I am getting some side effect like dark strong stool, spotting,missed period and painful urination and dark urine(blood like), decreased in amount of urine. What can I do about this, its so frustrating. Anybody with similar issue? please help me I am going nut.

I started Augmentin 875 mgs on a Thursday for bronchitis which it gave me the watery diarrhea every time I ate something. Then on Friday my stomach started making all kinds of noises, loud noises along with the running stool. Saturday was the same along with Sunday. Well I was supposed to take it twice a day for ten days. I stopped taking it Sunday morning. I couldn't handle the noisy stomach that is just terrible. It almost feels like a baby kicking in there and sounds like thunder at a distance sometimes. I have tried hardly eating at all and then eating like normal and nothing has changed it except having to go to the bathroom. The runny stool was so bad that when I would go to the bathroom to pee I couldn't tell if I was actually peeing or the other. I have actually been taking an anti-diarrhea medicine to try and control it while I am at work and that hasn't even been helping. I don't know what to do. And there have been times when I felt no urge to pee. The runny stool comes even when I drink something and all I drink is un-sweet tea or water.

Lost my appetite. Made me nervous because I always eat well. Dark stools and no energy. Lasts 2 weeks after stopping pills.

I was prescribed Augmentin 5 days ago for a large lump that presented on my lower jaw bone and was painful and my face was becoming very swollen. I saw the PA in my doctors office and she prescribed the medication to be taken twice a day. It started to make my stomach feel nauseous and felt like I had heartburn. By the forth day I had neck and head pain, no energy and my stomach was hurting so bad. Also this is a rather gross part. On that forth day, I was standing at my kitchen sink wearing pajama pants...and all of a sudden I felt watery stool just run out of me and down my legs. No forewarning and no control. At first that scared me because I had spine surgery 6 weeks ago and loss of bowel or bladder control is a serious sign that needs immediate help for a back problem. I woke today and have not taken any Augmentin and don't plan on taking it ever again. Its been 20 hours since my last dose and I still have nausea, and head and neck pain. That stuff is brutal.

I went to re with very high np and they said I had diverticulitis and gave me amici clav 825/125 for 7 days the first pill I took came back up. But I thought I had better finish this med so I could feel better. What a nightmare! Was very nauseated started to sweat a lot. Do not feel like eating, it has been 14 days since last pill and I am still having bad effects from that medication. I will NEVER take it again. I only hope these side effects are not forever. Lord help us all.

Since posting my original statement, I would say one half of the side effects are gone, but the others come and go. I will give it some more time.

The dental procedure is scheduled in a few weeks, simple due to $$$$.

Augmentin Also has steroid in it that will cause the dryness and being hungry.

my doctor gave me Augmentin for an upper respiratory issue and I took it twice a day for about 8 days and then I stopped because my whole body started to itch (no rash) it has been almost two weeks since I stopped the meds and my body still itches all over like crazy (still no rash) I have no clue what's going on! any ideas?

I was prescribed Augmentin for a chronic sinus issue. During the 10 day treatment I had stomach cramps, bloating, gas, which caused awful chest pains. I finished the prescription nearly 2 months ago and I am still having problems with gas, bloating, my right hand swells, I have numbness and tingling in my fingertips, and my face twitches. None of this happened before taking the augmentin. I really feel helpless and depressed about the situation. I told my doc and she said she didn't think it was the augmentin but I certainly do. Needless to say if I had to do it over again, you could NOT pay me too.

it is normal for it to last for weeks depending on the umber of days you have been on treatment. if it do not last or persist , you have to see your doctor

I've been taking augmentin as prescribed by a doctor after having a minor operation, but after using it I got a side effect (vaginal yeast).. Can anyone advise me on how long I might suffer from this side effect? Or should I see my doctor?

You are absolutely right! This is a very dangerous antibiotic and they should just get rid of it.

I encountered a hornet bite in July. The entire back of my index finger was beet red, and it did not go away when we left on a trip. Long story short, my hand is swollen shut in the morning when I wake up, and my primary dr gave me augmentin about 2 weeks ago which was a huge mistake. After 4 days I could barely walk and had to back out of the bed in the morning. My legs swelled a bit and are still swollen (Ocober 23). My hips ache, my joints are swollen and red, and the knuckle on my right hand is about twice the regular size. Went to another doctor who thought that the immune system went after the venom in my hand when I took the antibiotic and caused the havoc in my system. The pain has subsided a bit, but it is still present. The medication is not for sissies!!!

Omg I fee you.. I've been taking augmentin since yesterday and I refuse to take any more! As I type, I'm nauseated drowsy ... I took the last dose 10 hours ago! I'm so scared because I suffer from anxiety :(

I was give augmentin , docxy for 2 months and a malaria course and antibiotic shots for three days while in hospital because my low grade fever wont go away. I am now having constant nausea ,loss of appetite, bloating in abdomen and edema in legs since last 2 years and not able to find a reason for that or improve the condition. I was perfectly healthy and full of energy before.These drugs should be banned or patients need to be informed about the side effects. I will never trust a doctor or any antibiotic now.

An addendum to my first note: It is now March, 2014. I've been to UCLA Medical Center for allergy testing. They found that I'm allergic to Propylene Glycol. It is used in many products, including SALAD DRESSING! It is used as a preservative in salad dressings that do NOT require refrigeration. If you want a safe dressing, look in the refrigerated section and then STILL check the ingredients. My hand is still inflamed, but is responding to Lydex ointment. You have to be careful there, too, because the Rx Lydex has Propylene Glycol in it! I had to go to a Compounding Pharmacy to have it specially made with Vaseline as the carrier and without Propylene Glycol. I'm hoping that the diagnosis is correct this time, since I was sent home with the results from some other guy's test! And I thought that UCLA Medical Center was the best.

I hope u r feeling better i was on it for7 days n felt the same way. Dizzy confused depressed n so much more slowy every week i see myself getting better but im still not 100% my advise take a probatic n take a one a day vitamin to get the good stuff back into ur body

Hello,

I was prescribed Augmentin 625 for a dandruff condition. After taking it for 7 days I stopped. My periods did not come and I have been spotting lightly for 3 weeks now. I am very worried will my periods come on time next month? Is this a serious problem?

Hi Maria,

Did your anxiety ever ease up? I took augmentin after dinner yesterday - first pill - and got dizzy. Dizziness took about 6 hours to go away but then the anxiety, restlessness, and blank minded feelings set in, along with twitching in my legs. The last symptom appears to be settling down. It is 2:30 in the morning and I am wide awake. All from one dose! How long does it take for these awful side effects to subside???
