How Long Before I See Results?
UpdatedI was prescribed Lyrica today. Being the impatient person that I am, I was wondering the normal lenth of time before the medication starts working.
It took a week for me. What were you prescribed Lyrica for? I started taking it after surgery on my cervical spine and for some reason started having panic attacks or something, dizziness and heart racing, only at night when trying to rest. After being on Lyrica for a week, those symptoms stopped, (not sure why or how it worked). I am now having low back problems and those symptoms have started again, so as of today they have increased my dose of Lyrica. I sure hope it works.
Depending on the severity of your pain and your own metabolism, it can take anywhere from a week to a month to see results from this.
I was put on Lyrica recently for severe Fibromyalgia pain. It is a nice change from the narcotic pain medicines that I have been taking, but the pain is still very intense. Have any other FMS patients seen results from Lyrica?
I don't have FMS, so I can't speak personally, but from other posts on here and other boards, I can tell that others suffering from it have had good results from these types of meds.
Since it is not a narcotic or pain medication, yes, unfortunately, if your doctor has taken you off of all others, then you will still have pain until this starts to work, which can take, depending on your body chemistry and metabolism, anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks and for some people, as long as 6 to 8 weeks.
I started taking Lyrica about 4 days ago for pain caused by cervical femoral stenosis (my doctor said I am a 'classic C6) I describe my symptoms as feeling like I have a butcher knife in my back between my spine and right shoulder blade, and constant, dull pain and numbness in my right shoulder blade laterally from my spine to shoulder, and then down my tricep and top of the right forearm. The Lyrica helped almost right away but I agree that the side effects make it difficult to get excited about it. The 'spacy' feeling, forgetfullness, effort to concentrate, and speach lazyness are frustrating. Not to mentiong feeling like you are not yourself anymore. My doctor said the side effects do eventually go away. I'm on 75 mg twice a day and will jump up to 150 twice a day in a week.
Yes, most side effects do eventually wear off, the length of time it takes, really depends on your body and how fast you adjust and build a tolerance to the drug. For some people it happens very fast, for others it takes weeks, or months, and you may experience some side effects again, every time you adjust the dosage higher.
Also, for some people, some side effects never do wear off. I have been on the same dosage of narcotics for almost a year now and I still get drowsy every time I take them, I spoke to my doctor and she said it just works that way for some people.
I found the tablets worked immediately. first tablet gave relief as they are advertised as also having an analgesia effect. side effects arent too bad and go away. weight gain is annoying.

It worked for me the first day! I have peripheral neuropathy. Worst side effects from Lyrica are blurred vision and bruising (bruising has begun during the last week). I have been on Lyrica for almost 3 weeks.
Hi, I realise this thread may be a bit old but here goes - I have been on Lyrica now for 8 weeks for what may be disc protrusion C6/7. As mentioned previously I had acute pain across my shoulder and down my right arm to my fingers, with my arm, hand or wrist variously aching extremely.
I was put onto Lyrica, Tramadol, Panadol & Ibuprofen.
I slowly weaned myself off the other three and now take 2x75mg Lyrica, morning and night. I cannot identify any real side effects but early on I was lying around most of the time. Personally I think either Lyrica is fabulous (if you wait for a while for it to take effect) or I am improving lots :) - that doesn't really help much, does it?
I would like to know whether I have to go off Lyrica gradually, and if I do, once I am not longer taking it, how long before it's effects have left me and I know how I 'really' feel?
I also have severe fibo an degenative disc dease an been on lyrica for week an half but haven't had any relief yet, sure hope it works soon
I have diabetic neuropahy in both feet, it runs past my ankles and starting to hurt in my shins. The pain is 24/7 and finally the doctor said I had no choice to use Lyrica. Believe me, I fought this a long time. I take 50 mg capsule 1x a day and will for 45 days then go up to 75 mg capsule. For the last 2 weeks I've taken the 50's and still have no pain relief. However the sleepiness is my major side effect and I hate it. I fall asleep and wake later not even knowing I did. This scares me! Any input or advise would be appreciated. How long until the meds kick in?
Susan, 75 mg is not strong enough to help your pain, most doctors tell you to take stronger dose the next week if you don't have any improvement in your pain level
i used to take 75 mg twice day for nerve pain, i have nerve damage in my upper spine, so i have alot of pain.
I then went to 150 twice a day the next week!
Now its been 9 months, i just started taking 200 mg .
hope this helps you.twice a day.
Yes. I suffered with what I now know is Fibro, but for 11 years, I had all types of cervical therapy plus micro neuro surgery to remove bone spurs and do a Foramenotomy. I came out of it with mild nerve damage from where the surgeon had to shift nerves aside to reach the bone spurs. When the pain persisted, I tried an epidural at T2 but during the procedure, I received a nerve shock down my legs and into my feet leaving me with nerve burning and heavy feelings in my legs and feet. And I had an awful adverse reaction to what the doctor injected. I had to lay around with ice for 5 weeks. When pain persisted in my neck and was also all over my body, doctors agreed, three years ago, that I had FMS and a Rheumatologist put me on Lyrica 75 msg three times a day. I feel like a war site. The first 20 minutes after I take each dose, the nerves in my neck scream at me before they settle down and I feel 70% pain relief. It's worth it! The main thing I am struggling with is that Lyrica slows time it takes food to get through my GI tract, so I have very hard stools and my muscles do not contract to help me pass them. I'm really in a rock and hard place, oops no pun intended ??. I'm taking a stool softener from a supplement store, ground chia seed for an insoluble fiber and a soluble fiber (but not everyday and with water but I need to drink more water) but each pm I mix Magnesium Citrate powder and vitamin c powder with water. The problem constipation still persists. I stay awake from stimulant laxatives because the colon gets hooked on them and they can eventually damage the nerves. When I tried Linzess, it caused Fibromyalgia nerve pain all over and no relief of my C. I read that Linzess reacts with Lyrica so I'm sure that is the reason. Plus I have allergy to gluten and some other foods (went many years undiagnosed so probably did damage to my small GI tract). Does anyone have any suggestions for me about constipation with Lyrica?
I have to say I'm really surprised you've had such strong side effects on such a low dose. I just started taking 100 mgs. BID yesterday. I fell asleep two hours afterwards on both doses and stayed asleep for nearly five hours. But today I took my first 100 mg. dose and the sleepiness effect was much milder. There is no noticeable pain relief, but I have endured the most disruptive sleep patterns for eight years. After my evening dose of Lyrica, I slept so well and feel better and more rested than I have in ages. I will report back here after I've been on it for a few weeks. My pain is closing in on four years with my taking four mgs. of Dilaudid QID. It has been pretty effective. But I had a colonoscopy five weeks ago and it aggravated my groin pain significantly which is why I'm adding Lyrica to my long list of meds.
Does anyone else (with Fibro) have near fainting moments sometimes when moving around?
I was just prescribed this today also, 75 mgs 2xaday and it worked immediately with my fibromyalgia pain. I don't mind the side affects if it helps with the pain
It is now a couple of months since the above post. I tried Lyrica again and have, for whatever reason, not had the side effects I had initially. I'm taking 100 mgs. BID combined with 20 mgs. Imipramine (Tofranil) in addition to my 4 mgs. Dilaudid QID I've always been on. The Imipramine, in addition to helping me enormously in the sleep dept., also helps with pain. After about two weeks, the addition of the Lyrica and Imipramine have reduced my pain to virtually zero! The Dilaudid alone never, ever did that. I've been unable to travel for four years because of pain, but now it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is odd not feeling pain that I am reluctant to call myself cured. Follow-up reports in the future. May you all find a resolution to your own suffering.
Google Lyrica and get the research that was done in Germany and Great Britain. Lyrica was proven to not help many people. I traced it after United Healthcare/ Optum "suggested" it instead of Lidercain pain patches.
i took lyrica for back pain 150mg twice a day and i was told to go up to 300 twice a day and when i started taking that i was walking down the step and my muscles gave out in my legs and i fell down the steps, reason why i mention that is to say if anybody takes too much that will happen..i fell out in the yard when walking my dog and i had to lay there till my muscles came back, while i waited my dog he laid down beside me till i was able to walk again..i fell again in the house, it was alright when i cut back but didn't help pain so i was put on hydrocodone and oxycodone.. i hope Lyrica helps anybody that takes it just becareful not to take to much incase you are driving or whatever...take care and I HOPE EVERYBODY HAS A HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

I have fibromyalgia and been in pain for years, I'm hypothyroid. Do to having no thyroid. I'm on THR but it's not always good. I've been on Tramodol for pain for years, and it kept my pain tolerable with very little side affects. Moved to a new state and my New Doc wants me off of the tramodol and started me on Lyrica. Ive been on it for 2 weeks now, having blurred vision, constipation, and a little wt gain. She said all this will pass. I don't understand while she wants me to switch? Is lyrica less dangerous?
I too have a lot of pain. Just found out its Mild nerve damage L5 spine. Doctor said usually people are not in that much pain from this. I also had a mri done just waiting for results. I hate pills but in extreme pain. She just bumped the lyrica up cause she is worried about permanent damage to leg due to walking funny due to pain. I know take 150 mg twice a day plus 100 mg at night.
Have you tried glycerin suppositories? I've found them very beneficial and fast working.
So did it work? I just started using and seen no result. I am on day 3 and need to feel beter.
People with two fibromyalgia also often have orthostatic hypotension. Which means if you get up quickly and start moving around, your blood pressure will fall and you'll feel faint.
Has to get in your system well. With me it starting working the fourth day. I started on 25 Mgs. Then had to increase to 50 two years later to get the same amount of pain relief. Then a year later 75 Mgs which is where I am now. At present, I've been on it 4 1/4 years. It doesn't relieve all the pain. I have to do my part and avoid foods that trigger fibro pain and migraine. I'd rather have pain control so that I can go out and about so I put up with the side effects of Lyrica.
Miralax is excellent. But I've been on Dilaudud for several years and as good as Miralax is, I recently found that Walmart's Fiber Therapy capsules (same formula as Metamucil capsules) are the best thing I've tried. They are 100% Psyllium. I can't stand to drink the Metamucil powder in water. The capsules are easy to swallow. If your constipation is truly horrible, use a few Psyllium capsules along with a dose of Miralax. I think you will be as amazed and pleased as I was. Constipation from opiates is terrible, and I've eve used a prescription medication to alleviate it, but it didn't work.
Have you tried Miralax for your constipation? It's a really good product. I wish you well...
