How Long After Taking A Suboxone Can You Take An Opiate? (Page 6)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have been on 8 mg/2mg Suboxone strips for 1 year. I am having a tooth (back molar) extraction in the morning. I used my Suboxone strip this morning & the tooth extraction is at 9:30 am tomorrow. If I don't use another Suboxone strip before the extraction, would I be able to take Hydrocodone after my surgery? I don't want to get sick, but I am terrified of going through this surgery with no pain meds. Please help.

KATYBOB: Taking full-agonist opioids along with an antagonist like Bupe is pretty pointless. My Addiction Specialist and I are both quite shocked to hear of all the doctors out there prescribing Bupe and full-agonist opioids side by side. Completely counterproductive, and at times downright DANGEROUS. Here's some opioids, and then here's some opioid-addiction meds to go with them? Why?

The pain meds WILL still help the pain!! I know. I've been on subs for nearly 4 yrs.... unfortunately, in the eyes of some, taking narcotics/opiates while on subs, u won't FEEL that euphoric bliss like before in "life without the subs".... if u need them for pain, go ahead and take them AS DIRECTED! No need to waste a script if it's a high ur looking for. (No offense meant!!!) I was in ur shoes once. And I'm a registered nurse. I became severely addicted after 3 major back surgeries that resulted in a severe MRSA staph infection. I spent 31 days in hospital isolation. Staph is quite painful, but mrsa is the worst! It's worse than taking a bite of an oreo cookie only to find out its a knockoff store brand. I was given 100 mg of IV morphine 4 times a day. Needless to say I became addicted fast. Subs were a life saver. I have goals and by October 19 I plan to quit. (That's the date i started taking strips) Already starting the weening process.... good luck to you and I pray everything works out best for u.

MONICA: If you are a physically dependent on opioids, you are going to feel bad when you decrease or stop them. There's really no way around it. You could decrease your dosage EXTREMELY slowly, and the withdrawal would be much less intense. But the only way to avoid going through withdrawal altogether is to get on an ORT (Opioid Replacement Therapy), such as Methadone or Suboxone. If you need to find a Suboxone doctor, google Suboxone.com and you can find one in your area. Good luck.

RED: If you only took 2mgs, you should probably be feeling the Norco after about 6 hours or so. If you take the Subs too soon AFTER taking the Norco, that's when you will get sick.

There not going to make you sick. You can take the norco if you want, but you will not fell them. The subs will block the effect of the norco. I would wait at least 2-3 after taking the subs before trying to take the norco

PAINFUL PAIN: The only thing I can tell you is what NOT to do. If you start taking the Demerol, and then take those Subs too soon after that? You will go into Precipitated Withdrawal. Trust me, you DON'T want that on top of what you are already dealing with. And if you take the Demerol AFTER taking your Subs, the Demerol will not help you. The Buprenorphine in the Subs will completely coat your receptors and the Demerol will be useless. You need to talk to your doctor ASAP and figure this out. Because you can NOT take those two things together.

I'm about to go thru almost exactly thing/procedure in a few days. I will be haveing bits of what is left of a molar in back removed with dental surgery. My doc wrote me for 7.5/325 of Demerall for the pain along with antibiotic because it has been acting up and is now infected. He says the ibuprofen I'm taking will not help in a couple of days because it will get pretty bad and he does not want me to suffer over holiday. I did not even ask or consider that he might write for the pain meds duets me being on Suboxone 8/2 ×3 a day and figured it would not even be a possibility to help me. That being said obviously me being on subs didn't help with the pain so far, I had to take 4×200 milligram Ibuprofen every 6 hours for the last 2 days with the infection now I am concerned to wait and the ibuprofen not help or the subs. I'm trying to get ahold of my doctor to find out if she wants me to go off subs and hope for the Demerol to help with the pain until I get through surgery and then go back on subs or whatever. What to do?
Please help?

SOOZ : It will come back, I promise. If you were on a fairly high dose of Subs, or were on them for a while, it takes a bit longer than you might think. But no, it won't be a year.

It's been 4 days off suboxone and I feel nothing from 2 or 3 10 mg Vicodin. Hope it's not a year.

LITTLENECK: Yes, the problem is if one takes bupe too soon AFTER pain meds. If you take the bupe BEFORE the pain meds, you won't get sick, you just won't feel the opioids. Taking bupe too soon AFTER pain meds is where you run into trouble.

Little is correct, subs play a mean defense against other pain meds, maybe after the subs are completely out of ur system

If you are taking suboxone and take pain meds for toothache, the pain meds will not work because naloxone is an opiate blocker. You will not get sick at all. You just won't feel pain med. If you take alot of pain meds you may O.D. That is why you don't mix the two drugs.

BUDDY123: Yep, that's called Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, and it can drag on and on for a while. The worst part of opioid withdrawal is usually over by 7 to 10 days, but that PAWS just never seems to end. Feeling like you have a low-grade flu with the aches, fatigue, hot/cold, etc. And not getting good sleep is the one thing that would always throw me into a relapse. "I just need ONE night's sleep!!" Check out a product called Synaptamine. Amazing new technology for helping your dopamine receptors get back to normal.

I wasn't trying to give the impression that its taken 3 months to get out of my system. I'm sure that happen within the first week or two, but for the side effects of being off it I know I am still going through. Low energy, low drive, no motivation, clammy hot flashes, general depression, and what I wouldn't do for a good nights sleep. I miss sleep :-(.

ATWOOD: Is WHO a doctor? Who the heck are you talking to? Who needs to "calm down"? Is that your only contribution to this discussion; complaining that someone's post was "too long"? Gee, thanks for your insightful comment, bud.
