How Long After Taking A Suboxone Can You Take An Opiate?

Updated

I have been on 8 mg/2mg Suboxone strips for 1 year. I am having a tooth (back molar) extraction in the morning. I used my Suboxone strip this morning & the tooth extraction is at 9:30 am tomorrow. If I don't use another Suboxone strip before the extraction, would I be able to take Hydrocodone after my surgery? I don't want to get sick, but I am terrified of going through this surgery with no pain meds. Please help.

should be 48 hrs to alow to leave your system

So if I took a 10 mg Hydrocodone after not taking a Suboxone for 24-28 hours, will it throw me into withdrawals? That would do me in after surgery to end up in wd's.

Sorry to say but 8 mg of Suboxone is way stronger then any hydrocodone. It would take a year for you to even feel the effects. Tolerance takes forever to come back to normal.

This message was deemed inaccurate.

Thank you so much for your advise. I decide to stay with the Suboxone & see how it went. I have had no pain at all. I know you don't screw around jumping back & forth & have never had a reason to contemplate doing so, but this tooth extraction had me terrified. Terrified enough to almost really screw up. I am so glad I just stayed the course. There was nothing to be afraid of (but screwing up my program.) Again, thank you for your information.

@Marc - Oh my goodness you could not be more wrong with your answer. You really shouldn't give an answer if you do not know what you are speaking of. This is such a ridiculous answer!!

Most Re correct 24-48 depend also on you tolerance for narcotics or medications in general. I myself have a very night tolerance 24 hour I would feel the effects. Someone said 1 year that is the craziest answer someone could have given you.

You get precipitated withdrawals when you take opiates and then begin to take Subs without waiting until withdrawals. You do not get precipitated withdrawals by taking a opiate after being on Sibs.

Tell your dentist you are takin suboxone. He can give you a non opiate that will help with your pain. Just be honest with dentist.

I've been on suboxone for 3 yrs. Taking a strip, if you dont take anymore for 2 days you wont get sick. You must be in withdrawal before you start suboxone. However, taking pain meds after suboxone, I'd wait at least 3 days @ 1 8mg strip a day. Suboxone will remain in your system for a long time. Everybody is different. You should talk to your doctors before making any decision. Good luck. A word of the fear when not having suboxone, you do not get sick for days if you stop taking suboxone. I've weaned off before, it took 7 days before I thought I was going to die. Sincerely

Listen, it does indeed vary from person to person, let me explain why. For one, everyone has a totally complete and separate brain chemistry. EVERYONE. No one's brain is alike. With that being said, the determinant factors are many. 1.) Your tolerance level. How long have you been on opiates? Suboxone? If for a LONG time, taking any opiate afterwards it's not likely you will get 'high'. Reason being....Suboxone is an full agonisit in which actually fills the brain receptors that release dopamine, which is what gets 'rid' of the withdrawals. What causes you to withdrawal is when you have been on ANY opiate, your brain releases dopamine in excess, and when you stop, it has to have time to replenish what you've lost. Therefore, you are sick. Like I said, suboxone, methadone (antagonist) both work in similar ways except methadone 'partially' fills the receptors, and if you take other opiates with it, even though your brain basically kicks them back out (allows you NOT to feel high, no matter HOW many you take, and can KILL you), and there is no affect. However with methadone, you could stop taking it for a bit and once your body is able to 'feel' the high again, you could pick up methadone the next hour and would NOT get sick (unlike Suboxone, because if you take a pain pill THEN suboxone you WILL get sick (withdrawals). So, with that being said, it's hugely depends on your tolerance levels. And yes, for some it could take a VERY long time to feel high off an opiate, even after being off of them for nearly a year. That's NOT ridiculous, as to why so many people have said different things. EVERY body, EVERY brain is chemically composed differently, and you have to take in biological factors, as well as environmental factors. I know some who have been on Suboxone for two years, and withdrawals can begin a day after stopping. For some, it might take a few days. No one's the same. Suboxone does stay with you for awhile, in the brain, but not in 'feeling'. Although you may have some of it leftover in your receptors, if you begin to feel sick, then it's not enough, because it's slowly dissolving, and that is also why withdrawals last for SO long, and it's a slow agonizing withdrawal. My advice to anyone. I know how hard it is to get off of any opiate after being on it for some time. VERY hard. Nearly everyone ends up going back to them, even after being clean for years. If you are only addicted to 'pills', not methadone, not suboxone (LONG acting agonists), then your withdrawals will only last a few days, and by day 7, you should begin to feel normal again. BUT, here's the kicker, your brain, (the Hippocampus to be exact), is your 'motivational' center. So, again, depending on a lot of factors, even though you feel normal, that little area in your brain 'remembers' how good it feels to be high, and doesn't let you forget. It only takes you 'seeing' someone else take a pill, nod off, or one simple offer of, "hey, do you want a pain pill?" and instantly you are going to say yes, UNLESS, you work a program where you are surrounded by people like yourself that WANT to stay clean. And this is not something you do for a year, two, say you got it and quit. You have to remain in this environment for nearly the rest of your life. NOT for all, but most. Again, one more time, it depends on you, your brain chemistry, and your history of use. One year is not a ridiculous answer at all. For that person, it might take a year, for you, it might take two days. Seven days. Ten days. No one knows for sure. It's being studied currently, but it's a very hard thing to study because NO ONE has the same chemistry!!! Hope this helps ALL. :)

I have been taking suboxones for two years now. 8mg strips. For the past six months I wakeup and take a quarter of an 8mg strip, then around 3:00pm, I take another quarter. So I'm taking a half a day. Three days ago I had to get 6 teeth, cut out. I took a small piece of suboxone two hours before getting put to sleep before surgery. I never mentioned this to my dentist because 9 out of 10 times they will not give you narcotics for pain. After I left the dentist I picked up my prescription my dentist prescribed which was 7.5s, twenty of them. Of course when the numbness wore off I could feel pain beginning. I took one 7.5 that evening and then another before bedtime. I didn't take anymore suboxones that day. But the next morning, I took my regular dose of suboxones and immediately afterwards I took a lortab and half, 10mg lortab. And just like any other day, around 2, 3:00pm the same day I took another quarter of suboxones. I never once got sick. And I didn't have any pain either. I was taking a lortab every six hours or less for the next three to four days and like I said, I continued taking my suboxones as regular. I never once got sick or felt any different. Everyone is different..

Ok guys, if you are on suboxone, and have a tooth pulled or any procedure which they give you an opiate for, like percocet or vicodin, you take it on top of your suboxone. You take your suboxone as prescribed AND take the new pain meds as prescribed. I do it all the time.Just ask the dr prescribing you. They'll tell you. I don't care what people say about ''blocking'' or getting ''sicker than dope sick''. It's not true. Tell the dr pulling your tooth. He'll tell ya!

Not even a little true. I've taken opiates the same day as I've taken an 8mg Suboxone, and I felt it. Not nearly as strong, but if you take enough, you will absolutely feel it.

Absolutely whoever wrote this clearly has not only personal experience, but a well-working knowledge that everyone's brain is completely different. As a former addict with the beliefs of everything the above message indicated, I would say use your best judgment. Suboxone has changed my life for the better, and I would never try to get one over on my doctor that seems like drugs seeking at its finest. You should always be upfront with your Physicians, At least if you have your own best interest in mind. Everyone's brain is different their chemistry is different everyone's Walk of Life is different. Pray on it

Re: amber (# 17) Expand Referenced Message

Amber you didn’t feel the pain because suboxone is STILL an opiOID. It STILL has an opiate in it; and in some rare cases; suboxone is prescribed to individuals for pain.
It fills in the pain receptors in your brain as previously mentioned; so yes, you won’t feel the pain.
It was not the pain pill you took; the combination is dangerous and your lucky you didn’t get sick! Be careful!

Good luck to you all. Be safe guys.

Re: knight (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I've been taken subs for about 6 months and I had the urge to relapse. I'm prescribed 16mg of Suboxone a day and I took 1 12mg strip at around 6pm yesterday and today I had relapsed. I felt in my head something happening and felt a pinch-like feeling in my heart and my eyesight went fuzzy for about 1 second, then the pinch went away and so did the fuzziness. I definitely feel my brain wanting to feel what I had just done, but other than that I regret relapsing already after 10 min. My advice to anyone is think about what you're doing and is this going to be worth making my heart stop just for a feeling of wanting to feel high? I know I could've been stronger but I know now and my sobriety starts all over again. This possibly happened because i wasn't learning or taking the sobriety knowledge seriously. All in all I'm happy to be alive even after my overdose at the Best Western on 2/27/17 room # 272, which I believe 272717272 means something in my book. I'm just not sure what. I just thought I would reply with what I've just experienced for those on subs thinking about giving in. It isn't worth it.

You can not be on suboxone (an opiate blocker) for that long, then take a couple Vicodin throughout the day, and not feel ANY withdrawal symptoms. So either A. You're lying or embellishing to sound cool and different. B. You're lying or embellishing to help out whatever side you took in this debate. Or C. You have no concept of time, or when you took what.

You can take opiates at the same time it just wont work and the risk of overdose is higher. If you take opiates then a suboxone itsfull on world of pain. Its a minimum 72 hours at least. Tr400mg ibuprofen andparacetamol

Here's my experience: if you take 1 single strip 8mg of sub you'll be able to feel the opiates before 24 hours, it just won't be as strong. If it's a single time use of suboxone to get through sickness: if you take 2mg sub, you'll feel opiates in 12 hours; 4mg=16 hours. I'm a smaller guy but I take 4 mg of subs a day during the week, then take opiates on Saturday. If I wait 18 hours after my last 4mg dose, I usually take my normal 3-4 oxy 30s and I feel them pretty strongly. That's just my case. Hope this helps some people.
