I took Omnicef 300 mg 2x a day..I took them for 11 days..was suppose to take for 3 weeks..At the palms of my hands started itching..and were very red..than my left foot started itching..I stoped taking the medicine 1 day ago...this happened on the weekend...of course...I am taking bendryl...about every four hours..Now my left calf has hives..both wrists..have hives..my bikini area..is covered with hives..and of all things..my right ear..is flame red and itches...also my right knee...I called my doctor today...she said stop the medicine..I said I did...she said take bendryl 50 mg 3 times a day..which I am..and I think more..This is so weird..that it has hit such different parts of my body..ohhh. I forgot...how could I forget...tonight..my butt started to itch...and its just covered in hives...Has anyone else had this problem with Omnicef...I think I would rather have the bladder infection than go thru this

I am amazed at all of the troubles this drug is causing. I wonder if everyone has taken the generic version or the real deal? Two of my daughters had allergic reactions to cefidnir (generic omnicef) - one in April which was horrible (after she had completed an 8 day course of the medicine) and the other daughter just last week after only 2 days of it. I had thought the first daughter just had an allergy but now that both of my daughters reacted so strongly to it I think it is the medicine not my children. Nothing against other countries but the drug manufacturers farm this stuff out to India and China where I highly doubt there is supervision / reliable regulation of what in the heck they actually put in this stuff. It is awful. I wish there were a better way to warn the world about it.

I did both but the one that finally worked was the one that started at 5 per day and tapered off to 1/2 a day. I was also staying out of the heat, wearing loose clothes and taking some sort of high dose benedryl type medication (starts with an H?) several times per day. Hang in there, it will go away!

Hey Teri,
Did they put you on one of those Metrodiazonal (sp?)steroid packs... the ones that start high and taper down? Or did they prescibe you a bottle of 20mg tabs 3X per day (not sure of real dose , just an example)... Thanks for the encouragement... my forearms are so raw... again.. the rash was gone for about 1 1/2 weeks (maybe), but now is back, and the minute I go outside in the 100+ degree heat , or if I get anxious about anything... bam...there's the itchy rash...

I had the steriod injection as well, but what finally worked was the cycle of steriods to "right" my system. Hang in there, it will go away.

Thanks Teri! Will try high dose of steroids... the cortisone was a single injection. Worried that if these are the symptoms that we can see, after a month of no longer taking Omnicef... what has happened inside our bodies?

I started taking Omnicef June 25,2011~ after 5 days of taking Omnicef, my entire body was covered with an itchy rash, which would intensify the minute I went outside and a night, while I slept. I scratched so intensely while I slept, I bruised my thighs. I was given a Cortisone injection, this did not help at all. I have had watery stools for 5 weeks, and now the rash has returned on my arms. How long does Omnicef stay in our body systems? What can be done to treat this allergic reaction? Benadryl and cortisone do not work, any ideas on what might help?

Hi I posted the comments before yours, my other son (4) was prescribed omnicef 6 days ago for a sinus infection. I went to check on him last night before i went to bed and his lips were swollen and hives all over his body. he had not had any reaction to this medicine until last night. we spent 4 hrs in the er last night. I gave him benedryl as soon as i noticed and headed to the er where he got an epi shot, and steroid shot. this morning the swelling has gone down some and hives have faded. 2 of my children (my 4 and 7 year old) having the same reaction to the same medication after 5-7 days of taking it. OMNICEF is a terrible antibiotic, my 1 yr old is on it as well for a sinus infection. I threw both prescriptions out this morning.

My son is 20 months and is allergic to penicillin and had an ear infection so the doc gave him the generic for omincef...day 7 he got a horrible rash that looked like welts the next morning i called the doc and he said it was because of the medicine but his feet were so swollen they were turning black and blue the next day it got even worse his face swelled up...the doc said it was going to get worse before better...still a week or so later it comes and goes :( and his feet hurt all the time i hope this goes away soon....i dont understand why docs prescribe it if so many people have a hard time with it

My son was on omnicef for strep throat and ear infection. He had no issues with the medicine until day 7, he was supposed to take it 2xs a day for 10 days. On the night of day 7 during bath I noticed red bumps, we thought it was chicken pox. I gave him his dose of it that night plus benadryl for itchiness. the next morning I went to wake him and his lips were ballooned up. I was so scared it had restricted his airways. Immediately I gave him tylenol and went to the ER. He acted ok seemed to breath fine. When he saw himself in the mirrro he started to cry ( he is 6). At the ER they said it was most probably a reaction to the anitbiotic and gave him a steroid shot. then a rx of prednisolone for 3 days. His swelling has went down some 7 hrs after the shot. I am still giving him benadryl as well. Good Luck to everyone. Antibiotics can be so helpful but at the same time can reak havoc on our bodies.

From start to finish, my hives lasted about 3 weeks. When on prednisone, they diminished. They were extremely bad for about a week.

he is now taking prednisolone and azithromychin but its day 4 azithromychin is gone and he still has sinus issue but not as bad and hives are around neck nose pelvis and bottom.... they told me not to benedryl on him with the steroid so we have been soothing him with Aveeno cream and Aveeno oatmeal baths

What finally resolved it for me was being on a 15 day cycle of Prednisone in conjuction with antihistimines. When I was finished with the Prednisone, the hives were gone. Whew!

My 10 yr old was given this Omnicef and day after finishing meds which didnt clear up the sinus infection he broke out in hives... day 3 of hives and they keep moving and any sweating at all and he is severe pain and is itching coninusly even on steroids...

My son still has the rash. Still comes and goes and transferrs areas. The pharmacist told me to mix some "floranex" into his food. It made the rash tolerable. I gave him this once a day for three days until his stools became normal looking. Using aveeno bath soap as his dr said he has eczema now. (I don't think she wants to admit it was from the meds) anyway. Lotions aquaphor or the like on the rash has helped, too. I did give him some oatmeal baths, too. His rash has downsized and looks more like heat rash. Small raised bumps only on the back of his arms and thighs. I just really want to know how long everyones rashes lasted. If it lasts any longer I am going to go the the dermatologist and switching pediatricians.

I'm in my 5th day of this miserable rash, same as you have all described above. It started on my 8th day of Cefridin and it took me a few days to make the connection (I thought I was allergic to mangoes). Right now, I have the rash on my stomach, chest, neck, ears, hairline, bottom and bikini line. Raised red blotches with welts that blend together. 1st I went to urgent care (steroid shot, benedryl prescription) and it got worse. The next day I went to the ER (2nd steroid shot, epinephrin and prescription to Hydroxizone). The rash went down quite a bit, but today it is coming back before the Hydroxizone wears off. Does anyone know how long this lasts?

My one yr old treated for ear infection. Super watery stools to the point of what I'm thinking was blood (he hasn't eaten anything that color) very bad diaper rash w/ welts. We took him to the dr twice for the diaper rash and their response was antibiotics causes it. The second visit he had the rash only on his bellie and backs of legs. Now he is covered with a hefty rash, face all red from blotches of bumps and his ears and head to toe. Called poison control, emergency room and dr. Everyone said not to worry and keep w/ the meds. I am stopping right away. All this happened in 4 days of taking the generic omnicef.

I have taken Omnicef generic version made by Greenstone - after 5 days got an awful rash and hives - unbearable at times - if you take this drug and get this - call your pharmacy and find out if it was generic and who made it - then call the FDA and tell them.....

Update: The Benadryl creme has worked very well for this rash from having taken Omnicef. Six hours later, it has significantly reduced the red and bumpy rash. Anyone having problems with a rash from having taken Omnicef might want to try it.

I'm having the same problem with Omnicef. I'm on my tenth (and last) day, having taken it two times a day for bronchitis. At first I thought I had eczema, then I realized that the rash is different. It looks more like measles. I have red, bumpy welts on the upper part of my legs, on my arms and on my hands. Like one poster, I don't have problems with Zythromax. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll start with Benadryl creme and Zyrtec. Hopefully, the rash will clear with time.
