Help! Trouble Getting Valium Filled Twice!!
(Newest replies first)

I have gotten a prescription for diazepam filled twice in one month, 2 days apart. The prescription is for Adderall and diazepam from the same doctor. Usually, they will not fill just part of the prescription, it has to be filled together. I had the doctor escribe the 2 meds to Walgreens, I was told that they were out of Adderall but I could get the diazepam and the Adderall would be ordered and to come back in 2 days to get it.
I went back and was told that they weren't able to get a shipment of Adderall and didn't know when they would have any. I called the doctor and told him that the Adderall was out of stock at Walgreens and asked for him to escibe the prescription to a mom and pop pharmacy. I went to pick it up and I had both the diazepam and Adderall! So, I had 2 prescriptions for diazepam filled within 2 days of each other. The next month, I have the doctor escribe the same thing, Adderall and diazepam to the mom and pop pharmacy, I go to get it and was told that they were absolutely not going to fill it and wanted to speak with the doctor and called the doctors office but it was already closed. The next day I went to my doctor's office and explained to the medical assistant that does the escribing, and he sent it to Walgreens. Now, Keep in mind that I also had the doctor prescribe a different anxiety medication, Xanax. I had a totally different Doctor send my Suboxone prescription to Walgreens but they accidentally sent it to the mom and pops pharmacy! So, when I called to see if they had my Suboxone ready, they were very adamant about how they were not filling anything for me until they spoke to the Adderall and diazepam doctor... HELP ME PLEASE!!

If you got double the amount last month why do you need to fill it again now? That’s their problem. Your insurance company may have a problem with it as well, they probably just need to talk to your doctor to make sure you are not Dr. shopping. I used to go to a pain clinic that had a whole bunch of PAs, and I never got to see the same person twice, so at the pharmacy I was getting a different doctors name on my prescription every month, and the pharmacist didn’t feel like googling to see that all those doctors work for the same place, so they reported me to medicare for Dr. shopping. I had no idea until I went to my appointment with my PCP and my doctor told me that Medicare had called them to ask them if they know I am getting meds from “all these doctors” my poor PCP had to spend 30 minutes connecting all the dots in my chart to understand that even though there was a different doctors name every month on my prescription, it was all the same doctors office. And honestly I don’t even understand the problem since I only felt one month at a time, it’s not like there was any overlap, who cares if I get my refill from a different doctor. But it’s a controlled substance and they get all freaked out about it
Though you didn't do this deliberately, to them I'm betting it looks like you were pharmacy, or doctor hopping. Abusers, and traffickers do it to obtain multiple prescriptions for medications, at once. Though technology has greatly helped to cut down on people being able to do this, not all mom & pop style pharmacies have the same high speed equipment, and internet connections, so duplicates still sometimes slip through.
You can learn more about pharmacy hopping here.
In your case, it sounds like they filled it, then when their database updated, they discovered it had already been filled elsewhere, and unless your doctor verifies that it was okay for you to get two of them, they will not continue to fill prescriptions for you. This could also get you flagged at other pharmacies, since they all use the same databases.
Another issue is that if you received two fills on it the prior month, you should not need a refill now, unless your doctor has changed your dosage, or dosing schedule.
The pharmacy is perfectly within their rights to be suspicious, and want to check on this, before filling more prescriptions for you, and it is what any pharmacy would do.
The best advice I can give is to speak to your doctor, be honest about what happened, and ask if they will speak to the pharmacy on your behalf.
You are dealing with controlled substances that are commonly abused, and trafficked, so it is natural for them to be suspicious.
The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, and mood changes.

I know this was an honest mistake on your part, and I am very sorry that you are having to deal with all of this. If it ever happens, again, it would be best to tell the pharmacy that you already had the given prescription filled elsewhere, and do not need it. If they haven't given you the prescription, yet, so it hasn't left pharmacy hands, they can put the pills back in the original bottle, and dispense them to someone else. While it wasn't a controlled substance, I have done this with a medication that my doctor was prescribing a lot of, in case I needed it, but I wasn't taking that much.
Have you been able to get your medications filled, yet?
