Getting Off Of Methadone (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

There are two of us males, early thirties. One of us underwent major back surgery three years ago and has been addicted to pain medication for a total of five years. I have been addicted for about three years just from simply being his main caretaker and dipping into the cookie jar a few to many times like an idiot. We went back to our general doctor (same guy) and explained that we are both full fledged addicts. We told him we have been obtaining Methadone off the street as is seems to be the only thing that works. He asked us what we where getting off the street and we told him Methadone. His response was, "Well that's the smartest thing you have done so far, because of its extremely long effect on the body". We told him we need his help, that we just have no money left and our livers are just a mess and we can't move on with life. He decided to put us both on 100 mgs of Methadone to keep us comfortable until he could make some contacts with the proper addiction specialists that he new. We went for an appointment to his office once every week. We made various contact to different areas, inpatient/outpatient programs, who would not even touch us because we were at too high of a dosage of Methadone. They told us they only work with Suboxone which means we would need to be down to around 20 mgs of Methadone to make the transition to Suboxone. What a nightmare. The doctor also did not have any luck with programs because they where either the scum of the earth clinics, not to mention everyone's famous new drug Suboxone that could be treated in the privacy of a doctors office. About 3 months ago our doctor fell, he herniated a disc or something, all of a sudden was going to be out of the office indefinitely! He never referred us over to another doctor or anything. He just simply CUT US OFF the most potent and dangerous drug out there. Now we are back a square one and no one will touch us because our dosage is too high and there really is nothing they could do. If we could just get us a general doctor to write for pain to get us down to 45 - 50mg, then all these options could open up. A detox would be my first choice, but there is no way in hell we can both come off 100 mgs of Methadone that fast. Anyone know a general doctor in the state of MA that can write for Methadone for pain. That would just help us greatly, but I'm starting to think that there is no hope for us, but I know I cant think like that. Desperate in MA here.

I really don't know if this the right forum, but I honestly do not to end my life by taking one of several meds I have. I am 58 and was doing quite well. But the doctor retired and sent me to another pain specialist. I have a seziure disorder (epileptic now) Do to another doc, who gave me a medicine well known to cause ostoprostis, The doctor convinced me it would take time to stop the seziures well of course it did not. I have now fractured just about every

I was put on methadone, it did nothing for my pain, the money hungry doc made me see him 2 times a week, and just happened to have a small pharmacy,so he thought he would get me addicted to methadone and charge me usually about 8 times the price of a regular pharmacy. After a few months, I told him it still did nothing, thinking I was a fool, he wanted to increase the strenght of the methadone to b able to take every penny I had. I refused, he did not know I had done research, what he was doing was 100% illegal, I had my thoughts of what he was doing and had actually stopped taking it after only 2 weeks. I can happily say he is not a doctor anymore and is in prison and will never get his license back. Any patient he had wronged was given help for free from the insurance he had, and the money he had stashed away. The reason I wanted to tell you my true story is, if the cure sounds to easy beware. Just as in every single profesion, there are rotten apples. The old story, if it sounds to good to b true, in almost all cases something is wrong. I pray for all of you to get better, and only the best to one and all. PS I do beleive in God, thus if you have been taken advantage and beleive as I do, God also made addiction recovery clinic and proper doctors to help. No matter what God can help, but please, please get addtional help. I had my best friend and partner killed himself, and I lost him after 25 yrs together, his faith told him God would help him thru it all. In his letter, he said God had let him down when he needed him the most!! This is not a made up story and if even one person understands what I have said, I can have some releif, that the love of my life will have helped. Thank You for listening, again GOD BLESS all of you but ask friends, family for the extra help, to help you. True friends r there for the good and bad, family is forever!!

How are you. I don't know if you read my reply but what I put in it was that I hope you go after the owner of your clinic. I would go to City Hall a place to grievance. I would also go to the DEA he can't by lawharass the women who use his facility. I don't care nor does the law what they do to feed themselves or their children.this owner sounds like a real creep. Anyway I hope you the best you and your husband take good care

Hey I'm sorry I am so late responding to your post. I do not check this forum enough.
Please for the sake of others you should write the owner up to the city of Houston and the DEA and any other legitimate governmental agency for grievance. Even the better business bureau I would use them last yet I would use them. Look I am no lawyer just a SF CA Hippie who is on disability yet I have a experience in protesting. Its a pastime here in San Francisco. Seriously though pls dont let this guy get away with what he is doing. Your husband is great for helping I did the same thing for my ex. I would do it again yet make no mistake there were times I could not walk I was so sick. She finally found a clinic. They're everywhere in SF.
Anyway again this owner is sicker then the worst junkie at his clinic. Stop him and good luck.

I am down to 10 mg of methadone daily I tried going on 5 mg a day instead with percocet but got really anxious, depressed, severe diarrhea, panic attacks and so afraid I couldn't function. I also have psch meds for anxiety and depression but they did nothing, had to go back to 10mg just to function and help pain from fibromyalgia, arthritis and bersitis. I go to a pain clinic. I don't think I will ever come off methadone and Iwant to. I feel like a wimp after reading people that came off a MUCH higher dose!!!!! I am going thru a divorce and lost my Dad and visit my
Mom every other day in her Alzheimer's unit. I am also having financial difficulties so I have a lot going on. I want to get off methadone but I cannot seem to do it!!!!!!!

I've been on the clinic for only 6 mnths this time around. My 3rd time total. I cannot shake it this time around no joke. N i was only on 55mgs. My reasoning for quitting is solely bcuz of the clinic itself. I had just accepted the fact that I'm a lifer. But this guy who owns the clinic is crazy. He's known for showing up at patients jobs when they worked at strip clubs. so one day he gets really piss off at me for some reason bcuz i asked him to explain why my balance was so high; he then took away my take homes n discharged me with no detox or drop in my levels of methadone. I thought the first few days would be terrible uh no. It was the beginning of the 2nd week that i was praying for death to take me. Well my hubby still attends this bs of a clinic n it's saved my butt. Hes only on 30 mgs but he goes in every morn n pours his dose into his mouth brings it back to the car n spits it all out into a cup n he splits it with me. Right now this is our only option cuz the jerk owner has tried to blackball me from other clinics. (we live in Houston) but we are supplementing with benzos n Norcos. Currently trying to locate a decent Dr that prescribes subs. Ive used subs to detox off of 'done before which really didn't work bcuz they only wanted to do a 7 day detox. I truly believe a detox progam for 'done should be two/three weeks long. I also believe that the older you are or the more times you've been dependant on opiates it gets harder to kick each time. I did file on this clinic for immoral ans unethical treatment and im willing to take this as high up the ladder as possible. But i think i may give the suboxone a second thought, but will def try the thomas recipe! But this withdrawal this time around has been so terrible that at times i can barely walk. I really hope noone ever has it this bad! I don't wish this on my worst enemy!

I went n visited my hubby there n hood rats are all up in there wearing Nikes they bought from commissary! My hubby was almost dead after no meds for 2 wks. Finally they gave him sum cocktail that f***ed him up n helped the day before he was released. What a joke

Hi I'm 25.and was a H addict for the past 7 years. After all those years of using I had messed up my arm. I was in a bad situation and not taking care of myself and my boyfriend at the time only cared about getting his part of the drugs. I ended up in the hospital with infection all the way down to the bone and now I will be permanently disabled. Cause i only have 1 bone in my arm. But the hospital put me on 60mgs methadone right away which here is double what a hospital will usually give. I'm now at my second day without and nor feeling too bad. They started tapering me down 5mg every 2 days. Then once I got to 10mg they tapered by 2.5mg. I won't lie you will not feel great. But it's no where near as bad as it can get. I've been having a lot of issues keeping it at 0. so now I'm on colodine it's been helping but I'm just starting day 2. So I got a few more days to go before I won't have to worry about the withdrawal. But so far it's helping. Also I'm still in the hospital over 2 months now have had 2 surgeries and at least 2 more to go. I'm also on dilaudid pain meds which they cut down a lot the same day as my first day of methadone. If I can do this. You can too. Just taper slowly start st 5mg every 2 or 3 days if you need it. It's not as bad as full withdrawal. And it shouldn't be hard to find a doctor to prescribe colodine cause its not an opiate but it helps with all different withdrawal not just opiates. Give it a try. ND find someone to vent to on those bad days or moments when you just wanna scream curse ND break everything. It don't have to be a therapist just someone who loves you and is willing to listen to you complain to get it our of ur system. I hope I've helped you in some way.

By the way, I'm breastfeeding and unable to take ANYTHING besides ibuprofen. If I could I would try maybe LOW doses of benzos and ONLY A FEW as to not get hooked on those in the process.

I'm a 28yr old female who has been at a methadone clinic for 6 years. Biggest mistake of my love, besides getting hooked on pills to begin with. I decided about 2 years ago that I wanted to quit the clinic. The highest I got was 83mgs, so I slowly weaned myself down to 37mgs until August when I found out I was pregnant. I was scared for my baby. I always wanted a family, but being pregnant and on methadone was not the way I wanted it. Once you're pregnant, they will not let you lower your dose or quit in the interest of the baby. I actually had to go back up to 40mgs bc the hospital would be giving me pill form once I gave birth. And I did on April 24th to the most beautiful and healthy 9lb2oz baby boy. He suffered a little withdrawal as to be expected, but not enough to have to be given meds. My plan was to detox the rest of the way while on maternity leave. It would suck, but I would have my life back, and be able to focus on my new family and finishing school so I can provide the best life for my son. I took myself down to 30mgs at 5 mgs a week for 2 weeks, then to make it official signed a detox plan for 30 days, lowering 30mgs a day. I knew I wouldn't make the trip to the clinic for anything less than 15mgs bc I felt it was a waste of time to drag it out and I wanted to finish before I went back to work, knowing that there would be withdrawal for a week or two (my bf quit at 55mgs so I knew what to expect). Today is day 3.i feel abnormally well for being clean for the first time in over 12 years. This makes me proud, but also makes me worried that the length of time I was on methadone or maybe below metabolism may just be the culprit, and that in a day or so I'll wake up in physical and mental torture. I think the big thing for me right now is my new family and promising future. I have people depending on me to get better so I can provide my family with a better life. Every time I get worried that I won't be able to do it and I'll go crawling back to the clinics door step, I look at my beautiful son and know that I WILL be successful for him. I had an alcoholic father and I REFUSE to put my son through that. I am HOPEFUL and POSITIVE about my future and I think this makes a world of difference. Do whatever you have to do to GET OFF METHADONE, and any drug for that matter

Use suboxone over a week or so weaning down slowly. No withdrawals, promise. Try melatonin for sleep or trazadone

Of course. I just got off 50mg methadone but have been on 80mg for about five years, I've heard that the longer you've used opiates in life affects your withdrawal symptoms and the time length of them. I used about three 8mg subs to get off. But i am now without except I definitely feel up and down. That's going to be normal. For some it Lasts a long time, you're young, I believe it will subside soon. It's the dopamine and all the activity in the pleasure receptors in your brain that cause that. Fortunately i am on adderall which helps with focus n energy. I've heard they can prescribe it for post acute withdrawals, which is what you're going through now. I'm also and have been on an Anti depressant and am at the max so that wasn't an option, what i do is exercise when I'm "up" or really "anxious" or depressed if I can move. I put my headphones on and pound pavement. It helps me to feel like I'm getting stronger n getting my power back! I was on here looking for other natural ideas whereas now I'm concerned with getting my brain right. PS FOR ALL OF YOU. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. NEVER THOUGHT I COULD GET OF METHADONE. FOUR NIGHTS WITHOUT SLEEP, USED A LITTLE SUBOXONE, FINALLY SLEPT WITH MELATONIN! IM STILL AMAZED AND FEEL LIKE I'M GETTING MY MIND BACK!

Also yout feelings and likes come back. I cried like a baby for no apparent reason and felt awesome afterwarf. Music and moving, like cleaning your house help keep your mind off pinkbliquid hanbcuffs. What if you go to jail, or any of us for that instance. Thst would be a frickin' nuthouse. If you get takehomes ween down to like 30mg. I did it my 1st takehomes because of fear of being locked up. Kicking in jail is like rubber room therapy, lock you up and throw away the key, like Sid Vicious.
