Getting A New Prescription For Oxycodone.
UpdatedI have been given one prescription for 5mg of oxycodone after a spinal fusion surgery on L4&5, one prescription of 5 mg oxycodone for total hip surgery, and another prescription for the same for shingles within the last four years at different times. I used all the pills at those times. Now, there are days that my back where I had the fusion kills me that I can barely walk. Do I go back to the orthopedic doctor who did the surgery? With all that's going on with these controlled substances, will I get them without a problem, or do I get them from my primary care doctor if I show him the bottles? Over the counter does nothing for my back pain. I am 72 years old.

Hello, Ann! How are you?
Do you have a PCP that you see regularly? If so, speaking to them about your pain, so they can refer you to the appropriate doctor would be best.
However, you want to avoid asking for a specific medication like this. Most doctors will view that as being drug seeking behavior. It's best to explain your pain and let the doctor suggest a medication to help, if they feel one is appropriate. Whether or not they prescribe anything will be entirely up to the doctor.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Does anyone else have any advice to add?
You shouldn't need to take Oxycodone......it is too habit forming, and can cause other mental problems. Definitely go back to your surgeon, have ex-rays and ask for another pain pill. Gabapentin, a nerve pill, may also help.
I have only 71 years of life experience, and am not a qualified professional, but do talk about your pain with your surgeon and private physician. Best of luck to you!
Vicki
Hi, Ann: I am so sorry that you are living with this pain! I just had my second spinal fusion surgery in 3 years. It feels like you are trapped in your body. The pain is awful. I spend more time trying to get comfy, laying in bed, than anywhere else right now. I am 48 years old. Make an appointment with a primary care doctor you are really comfy with, or go see a really good pain management doc. You have probably been given gabapentin previously. That only helps me a little with nerve pain down my legs. I don't like taking medication, but you really don't have a lot of options after these types of surgery. Personally, oxycodone 5 mg barely gives me relief, combined with tizanidine, a muscle relaxer. I am now fused from T2 through L5/S1, with screws in my pelvis.
I just started reading a book called "Back in Control". When we are in chronic pain for three months, our brain makes new connections or pain pathways. We need to break those pain connections and make new ones. As I read, I gain hope for a pain- free life. God bless you, and I hope you enjoy the upcoming summer!
Re: Vicki (# 2)
Please, gabapentin is a JOKE when it comes to this kind of pain!
Re: Vicki (# 2)
Listen, not everyone is a pill popping person. She has ongoing chronic pain which is common with fusions. Sometimes they work for many years and sometimes they fail after 6 months. As a professional i see no issue with her being allowed to have oxycodone. I will however agree with a previous poster about not asking for the drug by name as that makes me raise an eyebrow. Though if she brought in past bottles to let me know what she has taken before that helps i would be at ease more so than no pill bottles.
