Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 18)

Updated

Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?

What makes you so worried cops WILL turn up at your door? Do you know someone arrested &/or jailed due to receiving narcotic pain medication from their VA doc plus a civilian pain management doc? And only once or twice? I'm not a doctor or nurse, however I was dx with a syndrome which causes chronic intractable pain more than 25 years ago. I've been under care of pain management specialists over 20 years. I've talked to hundreds of people who've been prescribed narcotics for half their lives. I can't tell you how many folks I've talked with who've done a heck of a lot worse things than accepting 1 or 2 scripts from a 2nd doctor & never have I ever had someone tell me they were visited by the local cops or DEA/FDA/CDC, Homeland Security, CIA or FBI. I mean, if it happens I'm pretty sure it would involve stolen prescription pads. Real crimes. If any of my counter parts here have any other experience please speak up.

Sgtcholo, unless you live in a place where law enforcement is so bored that they want something to do, you won't see any police. If you had forged any scripts or bought or sold drugs, then you could expect more than just a visit from the police. It is highly doubtful that anyone at VA or in the private sector will give you anything else for pain.

Sgtcholo , just because the outside dr prescribed the pain med does not mean that you had to take it or get it filled. If you got the pain meds filled from VA right before and/or after you got the pain meds from the outside dr filled, you didn't forget about the VA meds, obviously. All drs can see what meds you have filled by going to your states Prescription Monitoring Program database. Did you list the pain meds that you are getting from VA on the paperwork or tell the dr at the outside drs office about the pain meds you get every month from VA? If you didn't get pain meds from VA filled, you might get someone to believe that you forgot about them. But, if you did get them filled, it is a red flag for abuse/addiction.

To be very honest and open here BL. My mind was not in the right place around that time. And no it was not drugs. My younger brother had just passed away and I wasn't thinking clearly. And yes there is no excuse. I am not making excuses for my stupid mistake. I still have all or most of the va pills to prove that I wasn't abusing or selling. I don't know about anyone else but in my case the va mails my MEDS out to me in six month intervals. And yes it was my responsibility to cancel that Rx.

No stolen pads or forgeries. Just a complete stupid mistake on my part that I plan on never repeating. My wife who is a social worker tells me the same that she doesn't feel I should be panicking. Over stressing myself due to my heart pressure and all. and I haven't heard any word from my va dr either. Just sucks because I spend my day looking out the window worried. I don't know if it's me or just Florida for ya

Shug, SgtCholo, Shug, that's southern for calling someone sugar, you should listen to your wife! I wouldn't just tell you what I think you need to hear. That's not my job. I'm hear to truthfully relate any knowledge I may have from my experiences & those of people who've shared their experience with me. Stop worrying, have some lemonade, relax & enjoy your day. It's going to be fine. That's an order!

This is from a Vet who went to the WPB VA until I moved. I was getting opiate medications from the VA for 12 years due to major back problems. In Dec I went in to my yearly physical with no problems. However 3 days later my doctor called me stating that she could no longer prescribe me my opiate medication. I was floored. She then told me it was because I got a outside prescription from another doctor. I had no clue. Then she said 9 months before I had gotten a prescription from a doctor (who was a dentist ) for 12 perocets. When I had a implant done she said sorry and that was the VA policy and she had no control of it. No cops showed up. The point is the VA may not catch you right away because they don't use the monitor program unless the doctor asks which is when you go in. However it depends on the doctor. I would be thinking of not depending on the VA giving you opiate meds until a year passes or the next time they see you. Good luck.

So how long did you get the two MEDS for? And if I understand correctly wouldn't it make sense that you had a procedure done. Why would va hold that against you?

Sgtcholo, I wasn't aware that they were mailed to you. If you haven't agreed to not have any other dr treat you for your pain, that may help some, although I don't think they will give you anymore pain meds. They are probably going to ask you why did you go to another dr and get another prescriptiin filled when you should have had meds left from VA and you knew that your next prescription would be delivered. Also if the meds you had from VA weren't/aren't helping, why didn't you go back to VA ?

Don't worry about the police. Listen to your wife.

I don't know what I was thinking around that time. The loss of my brother made life hard. I really only needed the pain dr for the shots. But the MEDS came up so I guess I said what the heck. Stupid mistake. And that's what's got me all worried and all you know. And I haven't been back to va. I'm still on the mailing cycle and the next mail out is this week. If it mails out then it means that va doesn't know. If not then I'm in trouble when I run out of what I do have because the pain I live with makes life unbearable

It's not a crime on UR art. Not like U stole meds or scripts or sd them etc. the olive are not going to be called or come up UR house. My husband gets psin meds from thr VA. Mailed up him also. He had dental work done n got a small script like 2 pills gor pain meds. The dentist was not part of the VA. He filled it at a local pharmacy not even really thinking n nothing was ever said. That was over a year ago. N the only thing that coukd happen is U are flagged like someone said. Cops would not be called.

SgtCholo, I can say that I personally have had heard stories from nurses in certain pain management offices where patients had changed the date on their script and been successful at filling the script a day or two earlier than the dr approved. Though it's been years since I've heard this one mainly because the docs write out the number of pills now (ex:#30 (thirty)) I've heard of patients changing the number of pills on the script although not very successfully since there are instructions to be considered. For example, a patient was written for 30 pills. They changed the 30 to 80, took it to the pharmacy expecting to walk out with 80 however drs orders say to take 1 per day. Busted. Were the cops called in any of those instances? NO. The patient was promptly dismissed from the practice.

I've read on this very website of people getting scripts for narcotics from their pcp and a surgeon or neurologist for 6 or more months. Shocking, right? How did they get away with that for so long? In this day & time with data bases full of every narcotic filled in virtually every state in this great USA? Well, they did and then they got caught and then they're freaking because one or both docs dismissed them. I really believe there's so many folks with grossly under treated pain they do become a pill horder or take advantage of the doctors who're willing to write for their pain. Some have been able to hold on to one of their pain pill writing docs & some have lost both. It's very sad because, as I said, people don't have sufficient treatment for their pain. In my opinion that is. Never have I heard of anyone being visited by the cops or arrested or anything such as that.

I guess part of it has to do with hippa law. That's why the one dr stopped my MEDS but kept me on as a patient. He knew I wasn't selling them and of course I wasn't stealing the scripts or any of that. So I'm still getting my shots for my lower back even though they don't help for much. The other thing that is on my mind now is when and if va finds out about the pills, what will I do then? Will another dr be able to prescribe my pills to me? Should I be honest with my va dr when I see him and go from there or wait and see where the cards fall?

Sgtcholo, I know the laws.

Keikee, times have changed. If a patient alters a prescription it is tampering and/or forgery and there are laws against this. Many, many yrs ago, a pharmacist might have just called the dr and informed him and then the dr would decide what to do. It is Not this way any longer. A pharmacist is breaking the law if he fills a prescription that he knows has been altered and/or forged.

BL what or who are you aiming that at. I didn't forge anything or sell anything. My main concern right now I guess would be when the other dr finds out and stops giving me oxy also. Then I'm in for a world of hurt.

Because I got the perocets from the dentist while I was still getting meds from the the Va. The prescription was for just 10 -15 pills and it did not even occur to me it would be a problem I have gotten other prescriptions in the past when I had major dental work done. The worse part when the VA doctor called me I still had most of the pills. But she said it was out of her hands.
