Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 16)

Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?

sti , were you recently seeing one dr and getting a prescription for Norco from that dr and seeing another dr and getting a prescription for from that dr Oxycontin ? Were you receiving a prescription for Norco and Oxycontin from two different drs in the same time frame ?

Did you sign a pain contract with either one of these drs ?

I disagree with you, I have chronic pain for years and I have two doctors that are in contact with each other and each give me a pain prescription. When you haven't been on a medicine for a long time you don't understand that when a new pain comes a long and your body is already use to what your taking it won't treat the added pain. Also when your on a plan contract with someone you can't take any extra for anything that's the need to see another doctor. As long as your honest and up front it's in no way illegal. You can't put everyone in to the same category and say their bad

Sdowell, if two drs are writting the same patient pain meds and the two drs communicate directly, that is different. If a patient signs a pain contract and the patient talks to their pain dr Before another dr prescribes a pain med and the pain dr oks it, that is different than just going to another dr and getting a prescription for pain meds for any reason. There are a lot of people that have lost their pain management and can't find another dr to manage their pain because they didn't talk to their pain dr first before having pain meds prescribed and filled. It is not the responsibility of another dr to be sure you go by your pain contract.

What if you pain management doc is only concerned about his 3 offices and not me! I was on oxycodone 30 mgs for 10 years in PA. My doctor passed away suddenly and not one person, even the hospital did anything to help me. My new doc will only write Opana and for me, it's like taking nothing at all! Pa doc are scared and won't give you what you know works for you pain and body! I am considering seeking a doc that will have the guts and compassion to give me what has worked for over 10 yrs. On the new docs regime, I'm gonna lose my business because I can't work. By the way, I have systemic Scleroderma and extreme raynoids, 2 of the most painful diseases there are! Please help, what can I do, 1 Doctor is not meeting my needs, he only cares about $$$$ and protecting his 3 offices.

Ian, you may or may not be able to find a dr that will prescribe you the same med at the same dose that your previous dr was. A lot may depend on how many mgs a day you were taking. Do you have a copy of your medical record from the dr that died ? No dr has to prescribe you the same med at the same dosage.

I actually have a similar question. I have metastatic cancer for which I have a pain dr and meds for. I'm at the end of the month and if I take more for breakthrough pain, I'll be short at the end of the month. I phoned my Dr. but its the weekend so having no choice I went to the ER and was treated. The ER Dr. offered to write me for 10 pills, same kind but different MG. I filled it without a problem but I'll be going in about 5 days to fill my regular prescription. I asked the ER Dr. if thats considered DR shopping and she said just a long as I bring documentation that I have cancer, if the pharmacist should inquire why your filling it you should be fine. Now I'm concerned. Can someone advise please. I'm not in a place to have trouble with this right now.

Hello "C", I have a question which will help us assist you with your concern. Is the physician prescribing your monthly supply of meds a pain specialist with whom you signed a contract promising not to accept narcotics from other Drs? Or is the doc prescribing your meds your oncologist? I'm thinking in your case, you'll probably be ok. Let us know about the specialist or pcp prescriber of your regular pain meds.

Hi Ian, how long have you been with your new pain dr with the 3 offices? I'm not at all surprised the hospital wouldn't "help" you. By hospital do you mean the Emergency Dept?

I don't recall ever signing anything like that. I've been seeing him for awhile. He's the director of cancer rehab and its not a pain clinic nor is he a oncologist. Why would the ER Dr say that to me then. I never would have taken it I would have just came back to the ER if I had to. I'm so upset.

Cancer, the only question I have is whether you signed the contract. As I said, I really think you'll be ok, unless of course there's a contract.

I live in Louisiana and take norco from my bone dr for DDD and knee replacement on a regular basis. I'm having dental work done and they also gave norco can I get them filled and pay cash since I'm out early due to taking for dental issue?

Cesarwesar, if you get the Norco filled, be prepared for your dr to no longer prescribe you Norco for your bone and knee pain. If you didn't sign a pain contract, the dr may or may not stop prescribing it. It doesn't matter if you pay cash. All prescriptions that a patient gets filled are reported to the Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program. All of your drs, dentist and all pharmacists can see what you have gotten filled, who wrote it, how long it was to last, how you paid for it, who the dr was that prescribed it, etc.

You need to talk to your doctor that you get your monthly medication from and ask him what to do when you have dental work. You also need to make sure that the dentist know that you are on pain medication and that that is in your dental records also. I have found that many times Motrin especially if taken before you see the dentist is probably one of the best painkillers for dental surgery and I've had three implants put in and about 5 root canals.

Cesarwesar, you may not be able to find a pharmacist that will fill the Norco from your dentist until your other prescription runs out. If you get the Norco filled from the dentist when your other Norco runs out, you won't be able to get your regular Norco filled until the one form the dentist runs out.

Then you should be ok. However the doctor who gave you the script my ask why you did not fill it and want it back if you see him again.
