Apparently, taking Folic Acid as well as Methylcobalamin (Vitamin B-12) before and during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects. Those two nutrients seem to work as a team in this regard. DHA (fish oil) is also considered to be an essential nutrient for women, but even more so during pregnancy. Its positive effects help promote healthy cognitive function and motor development. However, a pregnant woman needs a large amount of it, a deficiency in it can cause birth defects.
