I have a close family member who has been in pain management for more than 10 years. We are now having great difficulty finding a pain management practice that will prescribe meds for his disabling pain issues. My family member has never abused drugs or substances of any kind and has tried every alternative to medication offered him. How is it that people who have been addicted to drugs, legal or illegal, can continue to go to clinics and receive maintenance medications, but my family member is unable to find a medical practice who will prescribe meds for him so that he can function and have some quality of life?

Is he actually asking them prescribe medications? If so, most doctors will see that as drug seeking behavior, which they are taught under AMA guidelines.
The best thing to do is to just see a new doctor, without asking for anything ahead of time, or asking if they prescribe medications, while making sure that they receive a full copy of his medical records, so they can see what has and hasn't worked in the past, then let them suggest a proper treatment protocol.
How is he doing? Has he had any luck, so far?
