Can poppy seeds cause a false positive on an opiod urine drug screen?

Hi, I have been on Trepiline for several months now and a recent drug test was positive for opiates, a second test was also positive. Knowing I took no opiates I spent the money for a professional test at a laboratory which was negative. People, for some or other reason, are doubting the negative test. I am also on 50 ug of Ethyrox and taking Colchicine for gout and Brufen.

I know the negative result is accurate but cannot convince others. I am in a position of having to prove my innocence yet nobody believes the proof. What now?

I am on a Methadone reduction program. The past 3 months I have tested positive for opiates even though I have not used any. I do take cannabis and am prescribed diazepam. What on earth is causing the false positives?

I just had a baby and before delivery they did a uranary drug screen and they said I tested positive for opiates and then after delivery they tested the urine of the baby and it tested positive as well and the only thing I can recall having opiates that I consumed was a poppy seed muffin is that possible to make us come out possitive for opiates

Hi Joann,

The rumor has it that consuming poppy seeds in and of themselves (including if they are in a muffin or a bagel, etc) can produce a false positive for opiates on a drug test.
