This is bull, typical govt attacking legit patients that suffer in pain... if the govt truly wanted to stop the overdoses they would work on stopping the illegal opioids from being mauled across an open border by the tons... but you know why feds don't go after the true cause of the majority of the smuggled fentanyl & the smugglers. It's not rocket science. Smugglers shoot back & pay 10% for the big guy. So they go after chronic pain patients to make it look like they are doing something & just like always the govt passes rules & laws to go after the law-following population because they are not violent & don't fight back & the prisons are full of them... rant over for now.

Unfortunately, while I understand their intentions, and the necessity of doing this, I'm afraid that like most other attempts, the people it is going to affect the most will be those who legitimately have a need for strong opioids. These types of actions seem to end up scaring doctors, so they are increasingly more reluctant to prescribe, instead of helping to curb illegal medication trafficking.

This class of medications is also not even great at pain relief, in many cases, they help by making someone not care as much about being in pain, due to the side effects they cause, such as feeling high, dizzy, drowsy, and sedated.

I really wouldn't be surprised if some political candidates started broaching the subject of outlawing all of them in the U.S., I've already read some outcries online about how a simple solution to the problem would be to stop manufacturing them entirely. I can only assume the people making these statements are those who have never needed opiates for severe pain.

I sincerely hope a solution is found that won't be detrimental to those who genuinely need them.

I had been on opioids since june of 2000 and I don't abuse them. Those that do are already breaking the law. Go after them, not true chronic pain sufferers... They have the tracking system in place. If someone fills an opioid script it comes up on at least a statewide data alert (probably a regional [like all bordering states] area). It's not rocket science... They keep cracking down on trackable needed prescriptions when it's not needed... just like gun checks (that everyone that buys from a legitimate dealer has to go thru), the same can be done with pain meds. If it was truly about saving lives (which the data base would & does help with) they would work on stopping the flow of black market opioids being smuggled into the country (which they are not & refuse to even try). Tons of that poison comes in & murders 10s of 1000s a year (way more than guns), but hey, the cartels pay too well to those that have the ability to do anything. 10% to the big (pedo sniffin) guy.
