Extreme Fatique, Joint Pain, Muscle Weakness With Eliquis For Afib (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was having extreme fatigue, joint pain, muscle weakness after starting Eliquis and started to having black stool with nausea and abdominal pain. I gradually reduced the dose until no longer taking Eliquis nor ever will. It really put a fear in me. Asprin works for me via my AFIB. I can tell if my blood is too thick when my heart is working hard to pump the blood out of my heart. I feel much better when my heart is pumping normally when the blood is thinner. You sometimes have to insist to your doctor the side effects you are feeling, this is a fairly new medication. Anyone else have these side effects?

Re: Rob (# 82) Expand Referenced Message

Eliqus I believe is the problem. I have no choice, since I am prone to blood clots, but just if I have surgery, so I am told I have to take 2 a day 5mg for the rest of my life. I have joint pain, tired all the time, I use to ride my bike 6 miles a day, or go to the gym, not anymore. I don't eat much, and eat healthy no fried or fast food for me, hardly any carbs, no surgar, and I have gained 25 libs since on this. The doctor says not a side effect, but gave a shout out and many replies with same problem. One runner gained 40 lbs. Do you have to be on this and nor Warfarin? I had no side effects when I was on Warfarin. It is a pain until they get your INR's straight, sometimes only a couple of weeks, and then get your INR's once a month. I would go back on that in a heartbeat.

I have really bad headaches & feel overall weakness. I have been on it since October 8th 2019 for approximately 2 months & for 3 weeks I have had headaches number 5/6, on the pain scale. My Dr. thinks it is something else causing the headaches. I cannot take Pradaxa because I had severe heart burn. What to do?

I have a tendency to get blood clots after a surgery so that is why I am on Eliquis. It has a better clotting factor then Warfarin. I had no side effects with Warfarin, but you would have to check with your Dr. first since you has a blood clot. On Eliquis, I have joint pain, weight gain, and tired all the time but all the other ones do the same thing. Wish I could be on Warfarin again

I have the same symptom on Eliquis joint pain, fatigue, weight gain all since starting this blood thinner. However I do not have a fib I have a clotting problem otherwise I would be on Warfarin. Was on it before and aside from having to get your INR''s checked until they get your dosage right I had no side effects and zip was on it for years. It just isn't good for me now. All the other alternatives have some kind of side effects for me

That is what the docs, unfortunately.........IT IS IN YOUR HEAD AND YOU ARE GETTING OLD. It seems that older folks that exercise a lot are more prone to the muscle issues. That is what I found.

Re: JCH (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I had a defibulator implanted in 1999 and formed a blood clot. I was on warfarin for about 6 years, of course you have to get your INR's checked to keep you at a certain level. I had no side effects accept getting blood drawn. After 6 years no more clots they just put me on 1mg and I was fine. In 2016 I had surgery and developed 3 blood clots and needless to say they first put me on xarelto and it did not agree with me at all. My doctor changed me to Eliquis and since I have been on it I have had joint and muscle pain, tired all the time, and gained 20 pounds, without changing my eating habits. I found out that other people are also experiencing the weight problem. I don't know if I want to try any other blood thinner because I believe there will be side effect to any of them. I will have to be on this for the rest of my life and it really disrupts the quality of life. Has anyone tried any other blood thinner out there and had no problem?

Yes I have had joint pain since starting elquis, but I have tried other blood thinners and this works the best for me since my problem is a clotting problem and not afib. Warfarin isn't for me as they have trouble getting my INR's stable. I have other symptoms from other blood thinners so I have to deal with this unless someone knows of an alternative.

I have a strong suspicion that Eliquis is the cause of my weakness and inability to no longer being capable of climbing steps. It really got worse when the dose was increased from 2.5 to 5mg. When you add to this the fact that I have been going to the gym 4-6 times a week for at least an hour each time for ten years. I still go but I can't even step normally off the curb in they gym without stepping side ways. I just finished 14 sessions therapy which the instructor had his doctor's degree. I still can't climb the steps. Doctor's poo-poo that it could be Eliquis that has caused the problem. They would rather tell me it's arthritis and my age and it is what it is rather tha explore other alternatives too Eliquis. As long as they don't spend more than 15 minutes they are happy. By process of limitations Eliquis is the place that changes should be looked at.

Solution...Don't get old!

The doctors ALMOST ALWAYS ignore these very valid complaints. That is how they are taught. So do not rely on them to fess up. They are afraid of lawsuits, and the drug companies give them lots of perks. Look it up. The bottom line is that Eliquis almost did me in. See my posts. And true to form, the docs dismissed this, even though when I went off the problems of weakness and pain in my legs went away. So complain to FDA by filling out a MED WATCH FORM. May help, but with the current administration in power, FDA is pretty much WORTHLESS, sorry to say. FDA is more concerned with getting money from the drug companies so the drug firms get their new drugs approved faster....WHAT A MESS WE HAVE HERE!!!

I have been on eliquis for 5 weeks and have started experiencing pain in my right leg. I am worried about stopping it as I have clots in my lung. I have health anxiety so I'm really out of my mind.

Unfortunately, most doctors have a tendency to discount patient complaints about side effects of drugs. Just keep after him or her, and let your doctor know you are not making this stuff up.

Hi I haven't been on it long but I am tired, muscle pain and stomach pain. Am going to my doctor tomorrow so am going to tell him how I feel. Am going to ask him if I can take Cartia tablets instead of this tablet. Hate feeling so yuck.

Yes, major muscle weakness with fatigue can’t wait till I can stop talking this drug. Doctor does not acknowledge that it could be from the meds.

Re: RC (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

I had many side effects such as dry mouth, sore muscles and joint pain throughout my body. I had been on it for only 4 months. I just quit because I could no longer deal with the side effects. I had a blood clot in my right lower leg. I am seeing a blood specialist. I would assume that he would put me back on another blood thinner. I prefer not. I will not take any of the newer drugs.

My dad is on Eliquis and Metoprolol. He has only been on it for two months now but has complained of leg weakness from day one. The doctors reduced his Lipitor down to 40 MG from 80 MG this didn't help. They refuse to take him off Eliquis and let him go back to an Aspirin a day which he was fine on for his A Fib the past 9 years. I will be calling them again tomorrow after reading all these posts.

Re: Bob (# 66) Expand Referenced Message

You are not alone here. I had the same issue after 6 months on Eliquis. I could barely get to the treadmill, where I have successfully ran for 35 years. My legs were so weak that it was difficult to walk. Now compare that to running for one hour at 4 MPH at an incline of 1 to 1.5 degrees. I told my doctor, and he was skeptical.....this is typical. So I had him switch me to Coumadin, and within a week I was pretty much back to normal, where I am today. The manufacturer, Bristol Myers, tries their best to HIDE this problem. Watch carefully their ads on TV. This problem is well hidden. Coumadin has its issues, but nothing like Eliquis as far as I am concerned. This apparently does not happen to everyone. Maybe the better athletes are more affected versus folks who are not very active. Just my guess here.
