Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 5) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!
I took the zinc tablets for 3 days at 5 x a day and nothing. I have now been referred to ENT Dr. and today had a battery of blood tests.. Those results should be back within 48 hrs... Will keep you all posted.
Cindi, do you know if they tested for ANA levels, if this is elevated it indicates an
autoimmune disorder. I am hoping for the very best for you! Let us hear
Just done the normal 'Google' thing and found you guys with the 'salty taste' too.
It's very early days for me, only the last few days have I noticed a taste, it was only tonight while driving I realised it was a salty taste.
Off to dentist Friday so will quiz him and see what he says, however, reading through all your posts, there don't seem to be much of a cure or even a reason for the taste in the first place.
Omg I can't belive it I have the same undifferentiated connective tissue disease and I belive sjogrens syndrome this salty taste is driving me crazy I can't take it no more! Did they give u anything that helped?
Morning Folks.. I am happy to report that after 3 weeks, the salt taste has almost disappeared. My blood tests came back ok ( except they found out that I have too much iron in my blood - but that is unrelated to the salt taste).. we do believe now it may have been a result of the anti botics I was taking for strep throat. But I did everything from changing my toothbrush, toothpaste to gargling 2 x a day with mouthwash.. using the Zinc tablets and drinking a lot of water. I even tried putting hot sauce on my tongue as I was sooooo desperate. My chiropractic had me taking a pro botic pill which is good for putting good bacteria back into the body.. So .. maybe it was a combination of everything . I don't know.. but last night I shared a bottle of wine with my daughter.. and it actually tasted like wine.. I almost cried I was so happy... its not completely gone and I see a E.N.T dr in two weeks just to make sure there is nothing else going on.. but I do see the light at the end of the tunnel... I will still check in to see how you are all getting along... Good luck to you all
Cyndi, I am thrilled that you may have found an answer! I could identify with the
with the wine experience, at this point have had a salty mouth three and half years,
have actually forgotten what the real taste of food really is....guess like a tack in your shoe you just get used to it. Happy for you!
This is good to know im going out to get the vitamins . i too had my gallbladder out two weeks ago . I had the same problem everything was nasty couldnt stand to eat anything i could get about 3 bites down then no more. the only thing i can force myself to drink is water. and cant stand that either. Hope this works .
Thank you for your advice I see my rheumatologist In May I've just had a operation to remove adhesions endometriosis a cyst and un kink my bowel the salty taste is still there but not as strong,my throat is normally extremely dry but since this salty taste started it's not been as dry as normal so I know the saliva in my mouth is not my normal saliva I have also lost the taste of food,I can taste raw onions celery and lemons I'm not normally a lover of spicy food but have put hot pepper sauce on my tongue which I couldn't taste
Add me to the list of people with this ailment. I'm 58, overweight, but otherwise in good health. For me, it started about a week ago, actually in the reverse fashion. For a couple days I was adding salt to my food and it wasn't registering as affecting the taste. For example, I sprinkled some extra salt right on the top of some potato salad I was eating. Normally, as soon as it enters you're mouth, it would register. So, I'd put on more. After a few days of this, I was actually looking at the salt shaker, wondering if salt was really in it.
About 5 days later, I suddenly noticed that I had a salty taste constantly in my mouth. That's when I put two and two together and realized that I have an altered sense of taste. Most noticeable is the pretty much constant salt taste. Also, I don't perceive salty foods as tasting anywhere near as salty as they did. Overall, I think my taste in general is also down a bit.
No idea what this is. The only thing I have been doing is last few months I've been skipping brushing/flossing at times. Of course, now I'm back on the bandwagon. Another factor that's possible in my case is I've had Lyme disease in the past. I see where just like Lyme can cause Bell's Palsy, it apparently can similarly attack nerves dealing with taste. But that appears to be a long shot at this point.
I'm off to buy some zinc and alph lipoic acid, as I've seen some evidence they may help.
Was this related to a spinal back surgery at all?
Thanks for your reply I saw my rheumatologist yesterday and showed them the marks in my sore lips he said it's typical sjogrens I asked him about a lip biopsy buts wanted to out rule the new medication sulfasalazine which is for my Connective tissue which is undifferentiated first, they have now put me on steroids for 6 weeks I am always tried but lately it's got a lot worse sleeping 8-9 hrs a night and 2-3 hours in the day I'm always tired
I have lost all taste other than lemon onions and celery it's getting me down,I've been off the medication for 48hrs and can just about walk with the pain in my knees!
Penny, here praying you altered taste and exhaustion has a simple answer like medication induced. If it does turn out to be Sjorgrens most cities have support groups and there are medications that help a lot of people. It is my understanding
that a lip biopsy is the only real way to know if it is sjorgrens. It is possible to live
a normal life with sjorgrens, I am 68 and walked two miles I the woods yesterday,
however I must admit the salty taste is a real burden. Blessings
I have a salty taste in my mouth and im not on lisinopril or potassium. It just occurred after I had sneezed
Did you ever find an answer? I am currently experiencing the same SALTY mouth. Any suggestions?
I've been having the salty taste for a couple of days now. I'm a diabetic who's recently been dieting and I have been taking Lisinopril. I wonder if Lisinopril has something to do with it? I've also been eating bananas lately. Idk
How long did this last? I'm in the same place now with difficulty eating
Also I had my blood tested for any type of kidney problems and came out negative. My kidneys are working properly.
Today is day four of taking Caltrate vitamin as described in the previous post. If there has been any improvement it has been a slight for me. Like other posters in this forum I do believe in prayer and healing however for whatever reason that has not manifested in my life yet. If you believe in prayer I am asking you for yours now. I have continued my regiment of detox by using raw squeezed lemon juice added to water however I don't believe I've seen any results from that either. I have not gone on a total fast due to weight loss issues at this point.
For those of you who might be reading this forum for the first time I am going to give you a list of the items I can or cannot eat due to the salty taste that continues to happen.
List of items I have difficulty tasting; barbecue sauce that uses brown sugar sweetener or regular sugar sweetener, buffalo sauce - I can feel the warmth but there is no taste. Cashew peanuts have some taste however taste like regular peanuts, chicken with breading seems to have no flavor - this would include chick fillet chicken, Kentucky fried chicken of any kind, Wendy's chicken sandwiches, hamburger meet- and the meat can make me nauseous, Chocolate of any kind to include diet chocolates, cakes and icing that uses regular sugar or diet sweeteners, Oreo cookies have no chocolate flavor and the white icing has a slightly sweet sensation on the tip of my tongue until my saliva mixes with it and then the flavor is gone, Lemons have no sour taste, carrots have no taste. Things I can taste with mild flavor or slight flavor are the following; tomatoes however tomato ketchup has no taste and can at times make me nauseous, walnuts - for whatever reason, walnuts seem to be the best thing for my mouth at this point, Campbell's homestyle chicken noodle soup however the chicken itself has no flavor in the soup and the broth has a slight flavor but salty.
I have been taking Flintstone vitamins for the last three days. And I still take one Caltrate at the end of the day. I do believe my tastes have improved about 25%. Today I stopped and had a Zaxby's kids meal with one of the hottest sauces, tongue torch. The first taste of the sauce let my tongue up on the left side. I'm not positive what that means however after eating subsequent doses of the sauce on my fries and a chicken didnt seem to be quite as tasty or hot but the fact is I can taste it! I have not had any products with sugar or sugar substitutes today so the jury is still out on chocolate and sweeteners. Good luck to any of the rest of you with the same issues.
Hello again, I'm just passing on some results from my attempt to recover from this disorder. I can't say that vitamins solve my problem 100% however I do believe it has helped in straightening out my body's ability to fight this disorder. As I said before I'm diabetic and I take a product called Metformin to help control sugar levels. Well it is said that this product can also cause the salty taste in the mouth, I do not believe my condition is due to this medication because I've been on it for a while. I am convinced that an antibiotic (Terbinafine) I had taken for a fungus, created the issue in the first place. I know that Terbinafine has caused salty mouth problems and taste dysfunctionality with a few people and you can search for that on the Internet. Personally I believe this type of antibiotic is prescribed for way too many weeks and create problems with the bodies ability to decide which cells are good and bad therefore creating a problem with your toxin levels in the bloodstream. Through my efforts of detoxing my body using various vegetable juices and lemon water as well as taking a regimen of vitamins I believe on my health has been somewhat restored. My taste is back and I am estimating at least 75% restored. I can taste chocolate however if I had to guess I could say 10% of the chocolate taste has returned and approximately 10% of anything with sugar substitutes taste sweet. I recently had some pumpkin pie and it didn't quite taste right because I believe my tongue is still filtering out much of the sweetness. I believe your body's health needs the vitamins and probably something to help detox every once in a while, but I don't have the exact answers myself yet so for anyone still suffering with this disorder please accept my condolences and I pray that you get better soon.
