Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

I hope you eventually got rid of the Salty taste you had for 2 weeks. I have had mine for two weeks and it is driving me mad. Like you can only drink water and only eat a very little.

When my incident occurred I was on no medication, and 27 years old, but I do remember getting pretty drunk and picking up a girl.

The same thing happened to me, when I was about 27. The salt was all over, my saliva, my eyes where burning, my stomach was upset, my urine burned. One other side affect I noticed was my bones , and skin was very sensitive to touch such as clapping. This lasted for several years, I am 70 years old now, and still have the bone pain. This happened in Portland Maine, and I had lobsters, and other seafood. No Doctors could ever figure what the problem was.

This information is care of the Mayo Clinic.... (Don't change any medications or your diet without speaking to your Primary Physician, Dentist or other doctor first)
POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR SALTY TASTE IN MOUTH:
Dehydration - This may be due to inadequate fluid intake or excessive fluid loss. Review your diet. Excessive intake of alcohol or caffeine can cause fluid loss, resulting in dehydration, which can make saliva saltier.
Side effect of certain medications, such as anti-thyroid medications and chemotherapy drugs.
Salivary gland diseases - such as Sjogren's syndrome or bacterial infection of the salivary glands (sialadenitis).
Post-nasal drainage - such as with a sinus infection (sinusitis) or allergies.
RARELY, a salty taste in the mouth is due to a nutritional deficiency, endocrine disorder or neurological disorder, such as epilepsy or migraine

understand the frustration. The ENT I was sent to was a nut case. When I described my symptoms he said "uh let me go see what I can find online cause I've never heard of anything like this." Then came back and said "well I checked online and there's nothing at all about anything of this nature". Wack job! There's plenty online . . . . . no cure or what causes it but there is plenty online. I had it for a month the first time. Then left as quick as it came. Now suddenly it's back for no reason. Driving me totally nuts.

I also have started experiencing this salty taste about a month ago. Some days it is really bad while others days not as bad. I am extremely healthy, 43 year old female, who takes absolutely no medicine at all. I am totally healthy - just having had a physical and had an oral exam by the dentist. NO ONE seems to know why or what causes it (unless it is connected to a medicine, a sinus infection, tooth decay or other oral health issue, etc). They cannot explain why it happens to healthy adults. However, I noticed that I am extremely tired as well....but that just happened today.

I really empathise with you! I keep eliminating prescription medications and so far, no change. Even water is salty and tastes like a Tablespoon of Salt was added!
It is so frustrating to have the Medical and Dental Personnel just shake their heads.
I recently stopped Metformin to see if it is the culprit! Thanks to all of you who share your stories. It is good to feel that I am not alone in this.

Obviously you haven't experienced the salty taste. Next to shingles it's the worse thing I've experienced in my life. I don't do Herbalite so no advertisement on my part. However, I do have a Fit and Active Chocolate shake for breakfast. That is the only thing I've been able to drink for 3 weeks. I too was on lisinipril for well over 10 years. Just went off of it. This all started when I went off the lisinipril. It had caused me a very dry hacking cough. My mouth is so dry that I've woke up from a dead sleep with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. I don't think anyone could make this up just to advertise for Herbalite or anything else.

Hello again, I'm just passing on some results from my attempt to recover from this disorder. I can't say that vitamins solve my problem 100% however I do believe it has helped in straightening out my body's ability to fight this disorder. As I said before I'm diabetic and I take a product called Metformin to help control sugar levels. Well it is said that this product can also cause the salty taste in the mouth, I do not believe my condition is due to this medication because I've been on it for a while. I am convinced that an antibiotic (Terbinafine) I had taken for a fungus, created the issue in the first place. I know that Terbinafine has caused salty mouth problems and taste dysfunctionality with a few people and you can search for that on the Internet. Personally I believe this type of antibiotic is prescribed for way too many weeks and create problems with the bodies ability to decide which cells are good and bad therefore creating a problem with your toxin levels in the bloodstream. Through my efforts of detoxing my body using various vegetable juices and lemon water as well as taking a regimen of vitamins I believe on my health has been somewhat restored. My taste is back and I am estimating at least 75% restored. I can taste chocolate however if I had to guess I could say 10% of the chocolate taste has returned and approximately 10% of anything with sugar substitutes taste sweet. I recently had some pumpkin pie and it didn't quite taste right because I believe my tongue is still filtering out much of the sweetness. I believe your body's health needs the vitamins and probably something to help detox every once in a while, but I don't have the exact answers myself yet so for anyone still suffering with this disorder please accept my condolences and I pray that you get better soon.

I have been taking Flintstone vitamins for the last three days. And I still take one Caltrate at the end of the day. I do believe my tastes have improved about 25%. Today I stopped and had a Zaxby's kids meal with one of the hottest sauces, tongue torch. The first taste of the sauce let my tongue up on the left side. I'm not positive what that means however after eating subsequent doses of the sauce on my fries and a chicken didnt seem to be quite as tasty or hot but the fact is I can taste it! I have not had any products with sugar or sugar substitutes today so the jury is still out on chocolate and sweeteners. Good luck to any of the rest of you with the same issues.

Today is day four of taking Caltrate vitamin as described in the previous post. If there has been any improvement it has been a slight for me. Like other posters in this forum I do believe in prayer and healing however for whatever reason that has not manifested in my life yet. If you believe in prayer I am asking you for yours now. I have continued my regiment of detox by using raw squeezed lemon juice added to water however I don't believe I've seen any results from that either. I have not gone on a total fast due to weight loss issues at this point.

For those of you who might be reading this forum for the first time I am going to give you a list of the items I can or cannot eat due to the salty taste that continues to happen.

List of items I have difficulty tasting; barbecue sauce that uses brown sugar sweetener or regular sugar sweetener, buffalo sauce - I can feel the warmth but there is no taste. Cashew peanuts have some taste however taste like regular peanuts, chicken with breading seems to have no flavor - this would include chick fillet chicken, Kentucky fried chicken of any kind, Wendy's chicken sandwiches, hamburger meet- and the meat can make me nauseous, Chocolate of any kind to include diet chocolates, cakes and icing that uses regular sugar or diet sweeteners, Oreo cookies have no chocolate flavor and the white icing has a slightly sweet sensation on the tip of my tongue until my saliva mixes with it and then the flavor is gone, Lemons have no sour taste, carrots have no taste. Things I can taste with mild flavor or slight flavor are the following; tomatoes however tomato ketchup has no taste and can at times make me nauseous, walnuts - for whatever reason, walnuts seem to be the best thing for my mouth at this point, Campbell's homestyle chicken noodle soup however the chicken itself has no flavor in the soup and the broth has a slight flavor but salty.

Also I had my blood tested for any type of kidney problems and came out negative. My kidneys are working properly.

This is my first post here, same issue has been happening with me. How salty taste, can't taste chocolate, anything sweet doesn't taste sweet. Usually can't eat much because after first few bites I sometimes become nauseous. Been to many forums and many websites looking for solutions. Have tried many juicer solutions to detox with vegetable solutions and straight lemon juice from fresh lemons. Also tried apple cider vinegar and water mix. I am diabetic and on medication for sugar. My issue started when taking an antibiotic for a foot fungus. The same antibiotic is use for people having dental work done. After three weeks on the antibiotic the situation with the salty taste, nausea started. I do believe the detox solutions are good however do not clear up the issues with the salty taste 100%. I am now trying the vitamin Caltrate solution. It is the 600+ D3 vitamin. I've only taken the tablet twice and do believe it has helped some taste however chocolate and sugar has not been fully restored. I do know that one thing has saved me from going completely nuts, pardon the pun, but walnuts have really helps to clear up the nauseous taste in my mouth many days. I recommend using walnuts for anyone who can have nuts in their diet. Second thing I've taken note of is using Crystal lite drink mix straight on my tongue removes the salty taste for 15 to 20 minutes but I can't recommend that completely because again you're using a chemical which can possibly add toxin to your body. I've only use Crystal lite when I feel like the taste and nausea SNES have got to go at least for a few minutes. Hoping that the vitamin works and I'll try to report back my results later.

I've been having the salty taste for a couple of days now. I'm a diabetic who's recently been dieting and I have been taking Lisinopril. I wonder if Lisinopril has something to do with it? I've also been eating bananas lately. Idk
