Expired Flexeril
Updatedi have chronic back pain however try not to take medication unless i have to. i have left over flexeril 5mg from a prescription written in dec. 2009 and expires 2010. is it safe to take for muscles spasms or should i toss it. i like to keep some in my cabinet because the few times my back gets really bad i am unable to get out of bed.
Flexeril contains the active ingredient Cyclobenzaprine, which is a muscle relaxant and you should contact your doctor for a new prescription, because it does lose efficacy past the expiration date, so it may not work as well as it did, when it was new.
This creates the danger of overdose, by taking more, to get the relief you need.

Almost all medications have a limited shelf life and will start to lose efficacy past that date.
Are there any other questions?
It is patently FALSE that all medications lose efficacy past THEIR "expiration date". The expiration date for prescription meds is almost ALWAYS a year. Why do OTC drugs usually "expire" in 3 years, or so? hmmmm.... The truth: MOST drugs are chemically stable compounds and take MANY years to decrease their effect. The possible exceptions are drugs that must be refrigerated (such as insulin and liquid antibiotics). Personally, I treat ALL antibiotics as "expired" after 18 months or so, but that isn't SCIENCE, that is just me. SCIENCE says the pharmaceutical industry has played us for fools with too much expendable income for too long! Ask the US military what they do about "expiration dates" on medicine... Do as you like, but know that you are ONLY spending money without reason in the case of MOST drugs! We are all free to spend our own cash as we see fit! *shrug*
Agreed. For recent back pain I took a flexeril that was ten years old, never thinking it would have much effect, was just hoping it would help the ibuprophen so I could have a decent Christmas dinner with our entire extended family. What I had was a decent nap on my aunt's couch (and I never nap). I simply could not stay awake. I will never downplay long term efficacy again.
I have occasional back spasms. I have bottle of flexoril, 10mg that is just under 5 years expired. Any danger in taking a couple of these for pain? Thanks, Bob
lol !!! Thanks for the laugh man !!! I needed it! You answered my question. I am in a lot of pain and my rheumatologist called my pharmacy with a script for Ambien! I don't want a freaking sleeping pill!!! I want pain relief! If I don't get her to prescribe Flexeril today, I will end up taking the expired one I have at home. I have not been able to sleep more than 3 hours for the past 3 days! Thanks!
I found a bottle of flereril with the foil seal on the bottle that is 2years old? Safe or not? Thank you.
You are absolutely correct, there is a study by the Harvard school of Medicine stating that the FDA supports the public wasteing our money when our drug expire we put them in the trash. They state that over the counter as well as prescription med are safe for up to 10 to 15 year after expiration. Insulin for 10 year must be kept in the refrigerator. Some meds will lose a little of the benefit but not much.
Save your money and stop listening to these thieves.
If a person has been taking flexeril for 5 years does it still work as well??
i have a bottle of flexeril from 2005 has it lost it potnecy and is it safe to take them?
I took a 10 year old flexeril today for back muscle pain after twisting my back lifting this afternoon. It's working just fine. It was prescribed to me in 2005! LOL!!
Agree that most solid pills like flexeril don't really expire. It's an FDA thing, liability and some do expire, and etc, etc. Thank heavens for knowing a couple physicians personally who let me in on this fact
My question relates to U/A's and the presence of flexeril, not expiration and efficacy. I have read that it registers as TCA and I believe this, however there are many out there who seem to think it will come up as other substances as well. What is the truest answer?
The US military turns them into their medical section for disposal. The military does not keep or extend any medicine and that includes Motrin.
Take it it will not hurt, i have taken my forceful when it was a year expired
I worked for a pharmaceutical company for 13 years. They do not want longer dating so they don't apply to the FDA for it. They want you to throw it away and get a new prescription. Probably a deal with the doctors too...so people have to return for office visit more frequently.
I have flexaril that was described in 2011 and it seems to be working just fine still
I just took 6 year expired Flexeril 10mg from 2009, 14 hours later im still here. Seemed to worked fine (tight back muscles).
Did it make you sleepy I'm really curious because I have pain and want to take some is it really that strong will I fall asleep or can I resist it It is a 10mg

Side effects from drugs can be caused or not caused by so many factors of what else u r putting in ur body or how run down u r. Age plays a factor as well…..just sayin food for thought
Re: An answer years later (# 35)
That was very true for me when I was younger & on no other maintenance drugs. Not so sure now. Need to break down & use it tho so I guess I’ll find out.

Makes you tired first day or so, then you get used to it.
Well I’m in pain (2 weeks now) and I came here because I google everything (although google is a search engine NOT A RESEARCH engine... I hope you all caught that).
This is a new pain for me. I have flexiril from 2013 and I’m TAKING IT!
Word of advice, don’t take the first response just because it says what you want it to say. It’s your body so be more intent about solving the answer correctly.
I read 47 responses before I made my decision and I MUST say you guys are really intelligent and well spoken. Thank you for taking the time for people like me.
Hi, I just recently knocked my back out, putting baked beans into the oven, had terrible back spasms so I took Flexeril that was two years out of date, it worked like a charm. Doing much better now.
I used to work for McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals (the company that makes Flexeril). The efficacy of Flexeril can be up to 15 years. This depends on how it's been stored. They don't want people knowing this because when you throw away your "expired" prescription you have to PAY for a new one. Money in the pockets of big pharma.
I have some 7 yr old Flexeril I started taking because I grind my teeth when I sleep, and clench my teeth/jaw when I’m awake. I’t’s not a narcotic, it’s a muscle relaxant. What was that old muscle relaxer? Soma? They moved that to scheduled narcotics.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
Not sure I'm asking this the correct way, but here goes: What is the shelf life of Flexeril? Once it is dispensed by a pharmacist, that is. Thank you.
I have taken new Flexeril twice today and don't feel any effect (10mg). In 1999 I got some from Kaiser and the very first one just about knocked me out in the middle of the day. I used a few until my back healed up. I still have them (pack rat syndrome). I'm going to take one of the old ones in the morning to compare the effects. While the two I took today didn't knock me out, my back does feel more stable. We'll see how well I sleep and how my back feels when I awaken.
All antibiotics? You know some like doxycycline become toxic after expiration.
