Estratest Generic On Indefinite Back Order! (Page 3)

Could this mean it may no longer be produced? I had a complete hysterectomy in 2000 and nothing else has worked for me! HELP!
Dear all,
Apparently, our problems are "natural" and, mostly, imaginary (for details look into Newsweek article).
thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/04/29/will-this-pill-fix-your-sex-life.html
There is nothing that cannot be addressed by exercise, soldiering through sex and some topical estrogen cream. “The conservative estimate is that just 10 percent of menopausal women need medical attentionâ€.
I do not need medical attention, I need to feel human!
Hi Hanna,
I think one problem that may be occurring is asking for "Estratest". Estratest is a specific brand name for the product produced by Solvay Pharmaceuticals, and that is no longer manufactured.
It's like asking for Delmonte canned pears as opposed to canned pears in a grocery. They may tell you they do not have that brand, but they may have some other brands.
Try asking the pharmacy if they have "Estrified Estrogen and Methlytestosterone" or it's equivalent. If they say no, then ask if their distributor can obtain some from ANI Pharmaceuticals.
The staff of our local Rexall drug store went the extra distance and contacted some distributors other than their regular one. They found one who had Estrified Estrogen and Methlytestosterone in stock and ordered it.
Dear all, I tried several pharmacies in NY. No luck yet. ANI pharmaceuticals does not sell estratest directly to patients. Any suggestions?
GREAT NEWS FOR ALL! Yes, I looked up the ANI Pharma company & on their web site and it says they are manufacturing it. SAME DRUG! Mike, thank you again. You and my husband have been awesome in your quest for help. Woo-hoo... We need to get the word out to women who are feeling pretty bad right now. Help is on the way! They should call every pharmacy in their vicinity to ask about this.
Hi Colete,
My wife gets a shot of testosterone once a month from her doctor or his staff. I'm not sure of the exact dosage. The dosage would vary with each individual since some women need the full strength Estratest and some only need the half strength.
The testosterone shots have worked very well since the initial shortage occurred. And once every 30 days works well. She does start to feel the need for another shot at 28 to 29 days.
Fortunately, our pharmacy has received a supply of the ANI Pharmaceuticals Estrified Estrogen and Testosterone, so she now has a supply of Estratest equivalent. But we now have a fall-back of Primarin and Testosterone shots in case the problem occurs again.
Mike, your post was so very helpful. I heard about the "shot" along with the estrogen from my PCP's nurse and it seemed like a very good option. But you didn't say if your DW is getting once a month or a yearly shot?
Thank you so much for keeping us all up to date. All your info is sooooo appreciated...
Here is a recap of the information available on this and a few other Estratest threads.
There is a supply distribution problem for the medication "estrified estrogen and methyltestosterone", but it appears to be sporadic as to locations and dates.
Solvay was the original developer of Estratest, a trademarked medication name. Other companies (Glenmark, Prasco, Breckenridge, Lannett) began producing a similar medication under different names. All of these companies have discontinued production.
These are all current Estratest equivalent manufacturers and the medication name:
Centrex makes Corvaryx in full and half strength.
Creekwood makes EEMT in full and half strength.
Amneal is also supposed to be the same composition in full and half strength.
ANI Pharmaceutical makes "estrified estrogen and methyltestosterone" by that name.
Any name with "HS" after it is the half strength medication
We visited our doctor and he gave my wife a shot of testosterone to go with the Premarin she is taking and that is working well for her. This was her treatment prior to the initial development of Estratest.
Diane received a script of EEMT 0.625/1.25 from Choice Pharmacy of Canada.
Colete spoke with a pharmacist. She suggested these alternatives for Estratest HS replacement.
1. Bio Equivalent Hormone Creams (Estradiol/Estriol + Testrostrone
2. OR Premarin Lowdose + Testosterne Cream (applied twice a week in thigh area (I believe)
3. OR Estradiol/Estriol + Testosterone Compound Capsule. This would require getting the medication from a compounding pharmacy.
There appear to be some solutions available until the supply distribution problem is resolved.
You may want to discuss all of these solutions with your doctor and/or pharmacist and see what is available in your area.
Brenda,
We'll give Mike the exception to that rule of no men. He has been a vital part of the conversation. It's nice to see there are men like Mike (and my sweet husband) who care about their wives health and medical issues. ;)
Have a wonderful day!
Dianne
Veronica,
The doctors can't do anything about it. It's out of their hands and in the governments now. The government has made this a Class III drug (yes, that's a 3) - IMO it may have something to do with the abuse of testosterone or methlytestosterone with athletes...but again that is only MY opinion.
I contacted choicepharmacy (which is based out of Canada) and got my script filled through them. They called me a few days before my script was to come in and asked me to call my GYN to answer the fax with just a signature and return it. They said that the supply was coming out of Florida. But, I had to go to choicepharmacy (once was canadageneric) to get my medication - who went to Florida - to get to TX.......
Like I said in earlier posts - I went around my elbow to get to my *** to get my script. It's worth it!
If all else fails locally for your local pharmacy, try choicepharmacy
Good luck!
Dianne
I came here looking for information for a woman on another website about getting sex drive back after ovary removal. I took Estratest for many years with good results and only discontinued when my husband developed Alzheimer's. I am shocked that it is no longer available. I guess I will direct her to this site to find possible substitutes.
I have been out for 2 months and have had a complete hysterectomy for 25 years when I was only 25. I am too young to go through the change and am in so much agony. I am in Colorado. I just heard about this through my KMart pharmacist. Why aren't our doctors doing anything about this?
I went to a Pharmacy and spoke with a pharmacist.
I haven't used any of it yet. But ladies, there ARE alternatives there. She said the Compounded forumula is not covered by my insurance and it would be about $40 a month. Small price for sanity.
Speak to a small independent Pharmacist, preferably a compound Pharmacist and ask for their idea on Estratest replacement HRT. Then have your Doctor prescribe it. Good luck to all of us.
I hate to hear your wife is having to replace Estratest with Premarin. That's the first HRT I tried after my hysterectomy. It made me CRAZY - I heard voices. And I had the worse PMS I ever had in my life. I stopped it, started again a week later. Same results (I wanted to be sure it wasn't something else). Estratest was my life-saver - I was back to my pre-hysterectomy self. I absolutely panicked last week when the pharmacy said Estratest was no longer available. And they are so nonchalent like, we were'n out of cream filled donuts. Don't know when or if we'll get more. My pharmacy gave me Covaryx made by Centrix, as someone else in this thread suggested. The saddest thing of all is that I wasted 20 minutes at the FDA.GOV site and could find nothing on this topic - not even under the Drug Shortages List. Pathetic.
I just stumbled upon this thread while searching about my new prescription of Estratest 1.25/2.5. I started to freak out when I saw all the posts about it being discontinued. I believe this medication has finally been the answer for me. I had a partial hyst 7/2010 due to cervical cancer. I left my ovaries in hopes to try to avoid all the potential hormonal issues of a complete hyst. Needless to say the last 3 years have been a hormonal roller coaster for me even with my ovaries left in tact. I have been all over with HRT, BC, anti anxiety, antidepressants.... pills and more pills in hopes of finding some normality. I had even gone to compounding bio-identical hormones with testosterone for the sex drive/libido issues. Well two weeks ago I had my ovaries removed due to pre-cancerous cells returning and was horrified at the thought of trying to continue my hormone quest for normalcy now that I would no longer have my ovaries. I know it is early, but I am optimistic. I have been on the Estratest now for two weeks and I feel great. Not one single night sweat, no hot flashes, less irritable. I was having them all the time (pre-menopause and low estrogen levels) before my surgery without taking Estratest. I am also on Estrace cream, so maybe this is finally the right concoction for me? I will keep the compounded cream formula (testosterone/aminophylline/arginine-L) also known as "scream cream" in my nightstand drawer as an added bonus for later :-)
In any event, I had no problem filling my Estratest prescription at Walgreens and even called them to verify that they have no shortage for my potential future needs. They informed me that they did not think there will be a future shortage. So perhaps things have settled down and everyone can readily get what they need???
And as far as 'Interlineal Peruser' is concerned.... Shame on you..... Grow up!
And Mike. Your wife is blessed to have you, I'm not sure too many men out there would be as passionate about the support of their wife's medications. Well maybe my husband too knowing what he has endured with my emotional roller coaster :-) Amneal is the producer of mine.
Best wishes to everyone!
Diane, I'm with you. Frankly, I think men should stay off this post. They have no idea what it means to have Estratest taken away from a woman who had been using it and been very happy with the outcome. Now perhaps the FDA should reconsider the use of Viagra. After all, it can cause blindness and heart attacks. There you go, gentlemen!
Dear Interlineal Persuer, ive been following along with this thread on Easratest. I came on here to find out one if anyone knew why a drug would be quarentined? I need this medication not only for peri menapause but for a adult form of muscular Dystrophy. This may be a medication that could change my life and others . And all i read is you degrading others that have come on here also saying they cant find it this is true? I live in NJ and have called all the drug stores local Rite Aid said this month. i dont understand what your purpose is on these type of sites other than belittle people? Everyone has enough problems they sure dont need someone that thinks there better and knows everything hurrasing them .
Alleluia!!! We got a call from our local pharmacy (Northern California) yesterday and they located a manufacturer who had Estratest equivalent. The company is called ANI Pharmaceutical and they use the medication name "estrified estrogen and methyltestosterone". This is a company located in Minnesota. Our pharmacy now has a stock of this and is filling all of their backorder prescriptions. They did say that the distributor they normally use still does not have any Estratest equivalent in stock.
Hi my name is Brenda from Nj Im having a terrable time getting this medication they keep saying next month next month how did you go about getting your medication ? i sure would appreciate it email me at
{edited for privacy} so i can tell my Ob
thank You so much
I am.from.New Jersey and this was my first script for Estrace and Rite Aid said they banned the medication? I called Wallgeens Costco.and CVS they all said there distributor doesn't carry it? Then my OB called the Rite Aid and.now all of a sudden.they will have it.in April.so yes there is something odd going on.
Mike,
I am so glad your wife is getting some relief! I had to go around my elbow to get to my *** to get it and thank God I had a persistent nurse, who was willing to help me. I promised her that I would pass on the information, IF I got my medication, and I have. I hope those out there who need it will be able to have the same luck. Now, when it comes time in June to refill, we'll see if it is still an issue.
Your wife is very lucky to have a man concerned enough to help her. My husband was about to panic....but was very grateful when the pack came yesterday!
Good luck everyone. I hope the information I've provided is enough. If not, ask and I will give you the information and directions on how to go about getting it through Choice Pharmacy, out of Canada.
