Eliquis Causing Weight Gain And Tiredness? (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi, my name is Laura and I just started taking eliquis about 2 1/2 months ago and I have gained 21 pounds which is highly unusual for me. Usually my weight remains steady. I have also been incredibly tired all day long which makes work next to impossible. As well as not having any energy to spend with my children. I am only 30, and was put on eliquis due to having a second pe and cumaden not being an efficient way to control my blood. Is it possible the eliquis is causing these problems? My Dr. Just blows them off when I talk to him. It is very frustrating.
I really think there is something to the weight gain from taking the Eliquis. I have been taking Eliquis for a year and a month and I have gained 40 lbs... Doing nothing different, I'm not one of those people that eats junk food......I splurge every now and then but not every day! I don't have energy and I have a 3 yr old and a 18 month old. I have been searching google more and more, but I haven't found any proof. But I know my body and this is not right at all! I am taking Eliquis for a PE.
I was on Eliquis for a year and experienced the same effects. I was tired all the time, had no energy and gained 40 lbs! I am now back on warfarin and I am hoping I can lose the 40 lbs I gained while being on Eliquis.
Hello, Laura! How are you?
Yes, you are not the first person to report experiencing such side effects from this medication and the FDA does report that they are possible. You may also experience headache, dizziness, easy bruising and increased risk of bleeding.
However, there is also a chance that the weight gain my be due to fluid retention, so your doctor does need to check it out.
How is your blood pressure? Has there been any elevation, since you've started taking this medication?
Hi. I am 2.5 years in to taking Eliquis, Bisoprolo, Furosamide, Digoxin. I had Atrial Fib. I had sleep apnea which was the culprit behind a quazzi heart attack. Lack of sleep combined with half IronMan training put me in the hospital with A Fib. On the meds from that point. I am between 180-184 while working out. 49 years old. I run, bike, swim, play hockey, eat right 6 days a week. When I hit 184 in the BBQ holiday months of the summer I put the breaks on and dial back to 180. Before Mexico I like to be 178. Immediately after being on the meds I experienced weight gain. Even while working out, decreassing my calories even more I went to 199.8!! I tried everything. I had an Ablazion done and it was successful 2.5 months ago. Last week my doctor after I pleaded my weight gain case dropped Digoxin and halved my Bisoprolol from 5mg to 2.5. I feel bettter and am down to 196. No wine or beer for 2.5 months. I am getting dropped from my Eliquis probably after my EchoCardiogram. I will let you all know if the weight comes off as I am suspecting. The water pill will not make a difference but the last 2 should.
So glad to find this board. I couldn't take Xarelto because of side effects but Eliquis hasn't been much better. I've gained 75 pounds in 6 months. That's not a misprint and I've been on a number of healthy weight loss programs to no avail. I have no hope that any doctor will change my medication due to clotting disorders but have decided to try aspirin therapy on my own until I lose some of the weight. Life is too short to look and feel like an elephant and remain sluggish because a doctor can't be bothered to find the root of the problem. For me, the root is Eliquis and while it saves a lot of lives, the weight gain here can no longer be dismissed.
I am also very tired all day. I have stayed on a diet and still continue to gain weight. I hope someone can answer the reason for weight gain. All of us that gained weight on Eliquis and xarelto are not crazy. We know our bodies more than the Doctor's.

I’ve been on Eliquis for 6 months now and gained almost 20 lb... I eat just the same and even healthier than I did before starting to take the medicine and still keep on gaining weight, it is so frustrating.
I read and see people with the opposite side effects and that weight gain isn’t a cause of the Eliquis but it has to be, I’ve never had that problem before.
My doc wants to blow off the fact that Eliquis is making me exhausted. It's not in your head. I'm a court reporter and now only work a couple of days a week because I am so worn out all of the time. This is so not me. I was a runner; very active. All I want to do is sleep and stay on the couch. This is ruining my life. He's supposed to call me next week.
I have been on Eliquis for 7 weeks and have gained 7 pounds!!!
I am seeing a new hematologist soon and am anxious to see if he takes this serious.
That’s what it is. I gained 12 pounds just like that. In six weeks off of it and 12 pounds less. No changes in diet etc. although my energy level is back. Was exhausted before. These doctors are clueless about some of the side effects. Your pharmacist knows more. Then sometimes you just do what we are doing here.
I’ve been on eliquis for about a month and have already gained 10lbs. My blood pressure is also way up. I have a history of afib which was pretty much cured by an ablation in 2005. No blood thinners for all these years. A new doc wants me on eliquis because I’m now older.
Re: Nyieda (# 3)
I've gained 25lbs in 1yr 3mons. I dont typically have weight issues. I didn't think it was from blood thinner, but that is only thing changed in my life since Oct 2016 My stomach is so bloated. I look 5 months pregnant and have lump/bulge on lower right side of abdominal area. My right leg and arm is inflamed as well. I've had every test possible and everything is normal. ???
I just want to stop taking.
I’ve been on Eliquis for a little over a year and have gained 25 pounds. My diet hadn’t changed until recently, when I began eating even fewer calories. Cannot seem to lose the weight, and I’m an otherwise healthy 37 yr old with a genetic clotting disorder. Went from 190 to 215 at 6’2”
My blood pressure is slightly high when I get up in the morning, then low in the evening. I'll ask my Dr about water retention.
Just went on eliquis got to get off it now. Horrible muscle weakness. I can stand it. Nausia in my belly. Even my abdomen feels weak. Gained fluid retention around the belly . Thought I was going to die. If the Japanese can eat natto a fermented soy product that stops blood clots so can I. No more eliquise. Hello to cardiokinase a natto food product that thins the blood with no side effects.
I've been on Coumadin over 15 years without incidence. The only thing you need to do in the beginning is have regular PT evaluations until the Coumadin is managed. I would not go on these newer drugs because they haven't had a proven track record. Besides the blood work, the only down side is dietary issues which you should know about. You need to watch your vitamin K intake which are in most green veggies. Once you are in balance between your diet & PT, you should be fine taking Coumadin or Warfarin. Good luck.
You are correct. The his med caused weight gain. I have gained so much.
I am new to eliquis after years of warfarin and fragmin. I suffer with recurrent dvts. I am looking to eat losing the Wight gained over the years of meds by using a dietary plan by forever living called c9 cleanse. Is this safe for me to do as my docs weren't sure.
Re: Sofia (# 13)
I agree it has to be s side effect- but they claim only weight loss is!
Very frustrating.
I am lucky enough to be off it. For now anyway
