Efudex On The Scalp

Has anyone used Efudex on their head? I'm interested in any side effects on hair deterioration or loss.

Hello Hoody,

Reportedly this will be determined by the amount of efudex that you need to apply. If applied topically then the medicine will not be absorbed into the bloodstream and thus will not cause hair loss like other forms of chemotherapy treatment. If it is necessary to apply enough cream that it will absorb into the blood stream then you will start to experience typical symptoms associated with chemotherapy such as nasuea, vomiting, hair loss etc. Below is a link to the source of my information.

Thanks so much Kevin. Will be a 14 light topical application and hopefully very little absorbed into the bloodstream. Think I’ll stop application once blistering or open sores appear. Is simply to rid solar keratosis spots

My spouse is using Efudex on the scalp, and tends to pick at the areas. What will this do to the treated area?

Efudex has caused an oozing of greasy fluid from my scalp. What can I do to stop this oozing?

I used Efudex many years ago on my scalp at the front top only. I did notice some hair thinning. I believe this was a result of the scabbing. It eventually returned to normal.

I’m on a 5 week treatment 2 times a day on my chest and neck. My dermatologist said do NOT stop treatment early. If followed through 86% of AK will be gone. The effects of Efudex depend on the damaged skin. Also skin type. I have fair skin blonde hair and blue eyes. Everything that says avoid the sun! My skin showed a few little red spots the size of a small freckle. Nothing really noticeable. Efudex caused extreme redness, cracking, bleeding, oozing. It is very uncomfortable! I have two more weeks to go. I trust my dermatologist. He is the head of dermatology at a well respected hospital as well as a researcher and part time professor. He said to beware of new treatments. So far he hasn’t found one with the same effectiveness of Efudex.
