Extreme Swelling Of Feet And Ankles

I had been taking synthroid for 4 months at 50mg a day but about 2 weeks ago I stopped taking it because my insurance expired and I am unable to pay for the doctors visit or prescription. About a week and half ago my feet and ankles started swelling and have now swollen to the point where the skin is so tight and they are so big I can't get my shoes on and can hardly walk. Is this caused by not taking my synthroid?

If your thyroid issue is going out of control, it is possible that it is what's causing the edema, according to the NIH. Stopping the medication abruptly could also have caused a rebound effect, which threat your thyroid function off even more than usual and made the situation even worse.

Such edema, however, does have the potential to be dangerous, among the possible problems listed by the NIH is congestive heart failure, so you really do need to make some arrangement to see a doctor and get this under control, for your own safety.
