Drowsiness On Lorazepam?

I was just prescribed lorazepam to help deal with the anxiety of my husband of 18 years divorcing me. He can't seem to wrap his mind around supporting me towards wellness, and he has contributed to the severity of the depression...for about 14 years. My concern is that lorazepam will make me drowsy and create muddled thinking. I really need my wits about me to navigate my way through the divorce. So, reducing anxiety at the cost of clear thinking doesn't do me much good. My Doc is replacing Xanax because it just knocks me out. What are other people's experience with this drug? Anybody get relief from anxiety WITHOUT drowsiness? I'm going to try a mid dose today (Saturday) in the range my doc prescribed. Trial run :0) What about split doses? I've been told to take a half dose two times a day when the anxiety is not controlled adequately by a single full dose. More sustained effect is the goal. Does anybody else have those instructions? Results?

Hello, Lise! How are you? I'm very sorry about what you're going through. I've also experienced divorce after a long marriage, so I do understand.

As to the Lorazepam, the FDA classifies it as a benzodiazepine, so it can cause drowsiness and dizziness as side effects, along with irritability and headache. There is also a risk of it being habit forming.

However, once your body gets used to it, those side effects should taper off and eventually go away entirely.

And yes, as long as your doctor approves, you can split your dosing if that works better for you.

At first, it will likely be best not to take it, when you know you will have to speak to your lawyer and deal with things concerning the divorce.

However, you may also want to talk to your doctor about trying an SSRI, such as Zoloft. It can help with anxiety, but doesn't cause as much drowsiness as the benzodiazepines. Its typical side effects may include nausea, headache, dry mouth and weight gain.

Does anyone else have any ideas or advice?
