Doxycycline And Chest Pain (Page 2)

Updated

I have been taking 100mg tablets twice daily for 2 days. I have been up with the most horrible chest pains both nights. It hurts to eat, drink, or even swallow. What is this? Is this normal for this medication?

I spoke with a pharmacist (which I recommend to anyone having drug side effects, as they're VERY knowledgeable and you don't need to schedule an appointment), and this is what he told me:

1) Anything with calcium, magnesium, or high levels of iron should NOT be taken or eaten at least a couple of hours before or a couple of hours after taking Doxy. It renders the meds completely inert.

2) You are NOT supposed to take it with a meal. If you can't tolerate it on an empty stomach, find something bland to eat that doesn't have any calcium, etc. I've found white bread to be helpful.

3) Always take it with a FULL glass of water.

4) If you get heartburn or nausea (I got both), if you take antacids or anything like Pepto, it can actually make it WORSE.

I've found that drinking a full glass of water and eating a slice of bread beforehand, and then doing the same immediately after, has helped reduce the side effects significantly. And definitely don't lie down right after.

I was taking doxy 100mg 2x/day for 1 month. suddenly one night it felt like I swallowed it wrong and that it was stuck in my throat. The feeling progressed to trouble swallowing, upper chest pain/tightness, pain in my throat/neck area (like a strangle hold) and a strong acid taste in my throat. I went to the ER because I felt like my swallowing was getting worse to the point of not being able to finish the swallow and catch my breath. ER doc said this is a somewhat common side effect with Doxycycline. I was referred to a GI specialist, who performed an endoscopy the next day. Much to everyone's surprise, everything was normal in my esophagus down to my small GI tract. He then referred me to the ENT, who did a laryngoscopes. He said my throat was very swollen and irritated, diagnosed me with probable Laryngopharangeal reflux (LPR), and prescribed Dexilant and a Low-acid diet. Two weeks later and I still don't have any relief. I don't understand how so many people can have this problem with doxycycline and yet it's still on the market. I'll take the acne, this pain is not worth it!!

Probably because it's not just for acne! Maybe with these side effects they shouldn't prescribe it for less serious conditions though.

I'm pretty sure the horrible heartburn I get from taking 2x 200mg daily is a lot better for me in the long run than having to be hospitalised with breathing difficulties haha.

Had this exact thing happen to me!

I took 200mg of Doxy for a tick bite a few nights ago. Took it right before bed and with only a small amount of water...about twenty minutes later started to feel like something sharp was stuck in my throat. Next day it developed into sharp chest and throat pains which got worse on swallowing, and intense unrelenting heartburn. It's been days and it isn't easing at all.

Dr was kind of clueless but has referred me to a GI specialist. It's like swallowing daggers, my whole chest/throat feels like it's burning, and my stomach feels gassy and acidic. No OTC remedies helping so far.

Never again!

I made the horrible mistake of taking doxycycline with only one sip of water, then going to sleep immediately after. I woke up a couple hours later thinking I was dying. I had the worst burn imaginable in my throat, accompanied with a "pill stuck" feeling, like it had never gone down. I was miserable for hours afterwards, and it made me nauseated for a whole day. Nothing would ease that burn for any longer than 3 seconds at a time. I tried ice water and crackers with no letup at all. I just had to miserably wait it out. Needless to say, I will always drink even more than 8oz of water with an antibiotic and I will always take it with plenty of time to spare before I go to sleep, because that was absolutely awful.

I took Doxycycline for an ear infection and have the most serious side effects: nausea, bloating, bladder pressure, back pain, headache and jaw clenching (precursor to seizure) Although I stopped the medication after 2 days, I still have the first 5 listed side effects and I have been told to take it easy. Wondering also how much havoc this causes to the human body and for how long. It's already been 5 weeks. Somewhere on the net I read that a woman had bladder pressure for months after taking this med. I am staying hydrated and taking pro-biotics but the damage appears to have been done.

Yogut is dairy. My physician told me with the doxycycline that I needed to be sure to eat yogurt for the live active cultures to aid in the avoidance of C-Dif, which is permanent, and can be life threatening.

Perhaps, the prescription insert has been misinterpreted.

I had a bad cough, also a severe sinus blockage and I was given amoxicillin, but it had no effect. I then tried doxycycline and it worked straight away with no problems, just a bit of sickness; but that is nothing compared to getting cured so quickly.

I'm on doxycycline 100mg. What do the numbers B 312 mean? B is on top and 312 is below the B.

Hiya,

I've been bitten by a tick and prescribed doxycycline. I feel so nauseous and I thought this would have settled by now. I started with two tablets on Tuesday, now on one a day and I have three days supply left. When I've taken other meds the side effects have usually settled after three days. Is it usual for the nausea to last so long?

I've not been well for a week. Thought it was the flu but my doctor said today that it's a chest infection. How long till Doxycycline starts working? Thanks.

Hi I have been taking Clarithromycin 500 mg xl for a week and now got Doxycycline antibiotics. I've taken them for 3 days and feel a tad better but my cough is getting worse. I'm in all these for a respiratory tract infection chest infection. The cough was dry before and had now gone real thickly and worse when I lie down. How long will it take? it's been 2 weeks. Feeling generally unwell, sore throat, cough, etc, but now just cough and still a tad tired.

Doxycycline is a very caustic drug, and will burn tissues, that is why they say not only to drink with plenty of water, but also not to lie down for half an hour after taking it. However, in my view, that advice is nowhere near sufficient, as tablets often just stick to the oesophagus on their way day the gullet, as they start to absorb water, so my advice to to would be to eat food on top of that to make absolutely sure that the tablets are totally pushed all the way down the gullet into the stomach, and that no traces of the drug are left smeared along the wall of the gullet.
