Please let me know if you take doxepin tricyclic antidepressant. If so how much do you take and how long does it take to work? Please respond. ## Hello, Theresa! How are things? I have never taken it myself, but Doxepin is actually now considered to be both a tricyclic and an anxiolytic medication. Like other medications in this class, it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to reach its full level of effectiveness. Its common side effects may include nausea, dizziness, hypotension and erectile dysfunction. ## Theresa, Hi, I take 100mgs a night, takes about 1 hour to really get sleepy. You will have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning until your adjused to it. Hope this helps. ## I have been on doxepin 150mg for 3 months. Now I'm on 75mg doxepin and taking 1mg clonex for the anxiety...
5 REPLIES UpdatedTaking silenor for sleeping. Have been taking it for three months.....take half of 3mg most of the time. Seems to give me just enough with the half to help with sleep. Can u take it every three or four days or so instead of every day? It does make me lightheaded, and do feel groggy in morning even with only half of Silenor. Thanks. ## A new Silenor user. My doc prescribed this in the hope that I’ll be able to sleep through the night. He suggested 3 mg first and if not enough, try the 6 mg tablet. So, since I’m a big guy, I reasoned I should go straight to the 6 mg. Well, I slept great but woke up feeling like I was drunk for the first hour. So, I knocked back down to 3 mg for the next two nights, but no full nights sleep. So, I wonder should I stick to the 3 mg and expect th...

4 REPLIES UpdatedI quit taking my doxepin cold turkey and I am wondering if the negative side effects from taking doxepin are permanent? ## Hello, Sean! How are you doing? What type of negative side effects did you experience? In theory, they should go away with time, but it may take several weeks, depending on how long you were taking it, according to the NIH. You may also experience some withdrawal effects, including headache, diarrhea, rebound depression and anxiety. ## Hi Sean. I too took Doxepin, for about 2 solid months and then a couple times a week. I still woke up, ON 4 A Day ( 1 every 8hrs, then 1 8hrs later and 2 at bedtime!) throughout the night SEVERAL TIMES! I quit it cold turkey but had no problems, that I know of. Seeing as my Health is Severely Declining every 6mons-a year. I have 3 Gas...
3 REPLIES UpdatedPlease let me know if Amneal Doxepin is gluten free? I am highly allergic to gluten, and take this for a rash. ## Doxepin is not used to treat a rash, it is an antidepressant that is also used to treat certain types of nerve pain. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, weight changes, and mood changes. What are the markings on the ones you are taking? Can you please post back and clarify, so I can double check? Thank you!
1 REPLY UpdatedWill it hurt me if I take the drug doxepin out of its capsule, divide in half? The lowest dose my ins co has is 10mg. Dr had ordered 3 mg as I'm 68 and also don't process drugs well. ## Hello, Diana! How are you? It's very hard to get appropriate dosing, by doing that. Have you consulted your doctor? There are others they can prescribed instead, that come in lower dosages that may work better for you. For example, Prozac/Fluoxetine is available in 5mg tablets, which you could break in half for 2.5mg doses. The FDA classifies it as an SSRI and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and anxiety. ## I was on doxepin for 8 years and took myself off for one year. Took 100mg at bedtime for small fiber neuropathy. I need to get back on ...
2 REPLIES UpdatedJust took 10 mg doxepin for sleep it's been over an hour and haven't yawned. Have I allowed enough time to go by? I'm thinking I must be immune to it - never had it before but I don't feel a wink of sleepiness. I am thinking of grabbing seroquel but dont want to mix it and have a bad effect. But don't want to stay up all nite either. I'm stuck!!! ## Silenor doesn't put you to sleep. It only helps you stay asleep (sleep maintenance). ## Doxepin is an antidepressant, so while it may cause drowsiness, as a side effect, according to FDA reports, it will not actually knock you out like a sedative or sleeping medication would. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, and dry mouth. Are you on any other medications? ## I just took 10mg doxepin for...

2 REPLIES UpdatedCan doxepin show up on a urine drug test? And if so, how long after taking it? ## How long does dixopin take to get out of your urine? ## This is an antibiotic, so it is not something included on standard tests, according to FDA information. Typical tests screen for controlled substances, such as narcotics, or benzodiazepines, which are things that might be habit forming and are commonly abused. Is there anything else I can help with? ## How long can doxepin be picked up on a gas chromatography test? I have a friend in pain management that sometimes is drug tested. ## I really need to know how long Sinequan (Doxepin) remains in your system? Going to drink rue and don't want any problems. I heard 72 hours should be fine, but wanted to make sure. If anyone knows about this please help...
4 REPLIES UpdatedI need to know if it shows up as anything on a standard U.A. and if so, what does it show as? I have to take monthly tests for work but don't want to get in trouble just for taking one of my old Doxepins when I need one. It's a 'drug free' work place and they won't care if it's from my old prescription or not, they will just fire me. So any info would help. Thanks. ## Okay, the first fact of relevance is that whether or not they are a drug free workplace, they cannot, under federal law, deny anyone the use of legally prescribed medications. The only policy they can have is against using them illegally. If someone has a current, legal prescription and they fired them for detecting it, they would have severe legal problems on there hands. There are only certain exc...
11 REPLIES UpdatedWhat is it like? Is it like Xanax? I was prescribed it and I want to know more about it. ## @Milk, The pill you're describing marked 'Mylan 4250', is a 50mg Doxepin hydrcohloride tablet made by Mylan Pharmaceuticals. Doxepin differs from Xanax in that it is a tricyclic antidepressant, whilist Xanax is a benzodiazepine class drug. Even though both have similar applications for anxiety and depression... They both function differently from a pharmacological perspective. According to MedlinePlus.gov, Alprazolam (Xanax) works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Doxepin on the other hand reportedly works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed for mental balance. Some people with certain chemical imbalances may respond bette...
3 REPLIES UpdatedI have been put on Doxepin for anxiety and depression. Could anyone please share success stories? Has anyone not gained weight on it? Will I wake up on time for work and be able to function for the day? ## Hello, Shelly! How are you? I haven't taken it myself, but yes, there have been many success stories posted. This is a tricyclic antidepressant and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and sweating. Not everyone gains weight with it, either. That is just a possible side effect. The best thing to do is to maintain a healthy diet and get lots of proper exercise to help offset any that might occur. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I know it's been a few years, but how did doxepin work for You? I have been on it now for 5 days
2 REPLIES UpdatedI have to have a drug screen for a new job. Do sleeping pills such as doxepin show up in urine test? How long does it stay in your system? ## First off, Doxepin isn't actually a sleeping pill, it is a tricyclic antidepressant and psychotropic medication. so it can be used to help with sleep issues, because it causes drowsiness and sedation as side effects. And with that said, no, these types of substances are not tested for on standard drug tests. In addition, if you are taking something by prescription, you simply need to inform them of that, when you go in for testing. Are there any other questions or comments? ## Im on Doxepin and its no drug that can be abused unless you like very dry mouth and dehydration. I would take more than prescribed because I hate them but I have to have...
6 REPLIES UpdatedToday I started taking 20mg of Doxepin for chronic insomnia after some of the things I have been reading. Should I go ahead and continue trying this for not being able to fall asleep? ## Is it helping you? It does work well for some people. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings, and weight changes. Are you on any other medications?
1 REPLY UpdatedIs it normal to take dexepin 3 hours before I fill sleepiest .... I am taking 25 mg. and additional half capsule. My Md has also describe SAMe for depression which suppose to take at night as well, Tried doing this for 1 night with 25 mg dexepin and could not sleep. Tried taking the SAMe 400mg doing the day could this be making me very sleepy also taking Enlyte in the morning would appreciate an advice ## Drowsiness can be a normal side effect of Doxepin, according to FDA reports. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood changes, and weight changes. If it makes you very sleepy, you might do better taking it at night, before you go to bed. Have you informed your prescribed of the problem you're having? How are you taking half a capsule? There's no way ...
1 REPLY UpdatedI have been taking Silenor for 5 night. My doctor gave it to me as I tapered off of Seroquel. I was on 25 mg of Seroquel for 2 months. I tapered the pill down in quarters until I was off. I was. I was very excited because I was falling asleep on my own again, but had trouble staying asleep (sleep maintenance). So my doctor told me to try Silenor to help me stay asleep. It hasn't been working very well. I do sleep longer, but I still have frequent wake ups. I have also been having headaches, night sweats with my dreams and feeling pretty out of it in the morning. My mood has also been low. Do I need to taper off the 3mg of Silenor after only 5 nights?
UpdatedHaving a lot of fatigue and mental fog during the day after my nightly dose of 10mg. Also experiencing dry and red eyes. It's been 3 nights. Does this subside after some time? If so how long? ## Those are listed by the NIH as being normal side effects and yes, they should subside, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take about 4 weeks. Other side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you so much for your reply. Are the weight changes from eating more or the way your body digests food/drink? I'm concerned about the weight changes. I feel like i may be retaining more water.
2 REPLIES UpdatedI have been taking Doxepin for about a year and I have the side effect of puffy cheeks. How long does it take for the weight gain and puffy cheeks to disappear? ## Hello, Mary! How are you doing? Has there been any change? The weight gain can be a typical side effect and, while it can last the duration of the time you're taking the medication, it usually levels off after a few months, as in it should hit a peak and then stop, you may not lose what you've gained, but shouldn't keep gaining more, according to FDA reports. How much have you gained? As to the puffy cheeks, that is not a reported side effect, though it could be related to the weight gain. Have you consulted your physician? ## Yes I have been off of the Doxepin for over a month. I haven't lost much weight, but...
2 REPLIES UpdatedI have been taking doxipen for 2 weeks and it has caused me to be very depressed, on the verge of suicidal. How many days till i feel good again? I took one last night, but wont take anymore!! ## Hi, Glinda! Sorry about the problem you had with it. These medications can cause that, in some people that take them and usually stopping them is the best thing. Learn more Doxepin details here. You weren't on it for very long, so it shouldn't take too long for the effects to wear off. Have you consulted your doctor about the problem? ## Any drug the doctor gives you as an alternative to a narcotic is a pill for depression. I caution anyone using these drugs because it alters your chemical makeup of dopamine. This will make you have thoughts of suicide and have aggressive behavior. I su...
2 REPLIES UpdatedI started Doxepin about 3 weeks ago to help me sleep. I went to the doctor because I was dizzy. Thought it was vertigo but it was a sinus infection. The dizziness should be gone by now. The only change in meds is the Doxepin. How long does it take to get it out of my system? ## Hello, Laura! How are you? I am sorry about the problem you're experiencing. Doxepin can cause dizziness as a side effect, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, headache, dry mouth, and weight changes. Generally, they are transient and should go away, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take about 4 to 5 weeks. Were you also on an antibiotic for the infection? Most of them can also cause dizziness as a side effect.
