Does Levothyroxine Cause Acne (Page 4) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have been taking 25mcg for about 6 weeks and feel much better, no weight loss, but no gain. I have developed acne on my chin and around the right side of my mouth...is this a side effect? Anyone else had this happen?
Hi I was on synthroid for over 2 years and got really bad acne like cysts. I stopped taking jan 2014 and felt 100% better no breakouts nice hair lots of energy, but guess what got my blood tests back today 10.75 and wants me to go on more meds. I want to try the natural route like iodine supplement. Don't know what to do.
What lifestyle/diet changes did you make? I am about the same age as you with the same type of thing going on and after doing everything I can think of to get rid of this horrible, painful cystic acne I keep getting along my jawline and neck (that only showed up a few weeks after beginning the levothyroxine). I have yet to talk to my doctor about this problem, partially because I just recently decided I've done all I can do for my complexion and partially because I am worried she will just throw some antibiotics at it and fix it temporarily.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED VERY HYPERTHYROIDISM AND HYPO. THE TEXTURE OF YOUR SKIN CHANGES DRAMATICALY! COURSE,THICK HYPO SKIN SO MUCH YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE YOUR PORES AND TRAPS ALL OIL CAUSING CYSTIC ACNE AND LIPID DEPOSITS. ISOTRETINOINS, ANTIBIOTICS, TOPICALS YOU MUST ATTACK ON ALL FRONTS [INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL]. CHOLESTEROL MEDS FOR LIPIDS, TRY T3 OR POTASSIUM IODIDE FOR THYROID INSTEAD OF T4. DR.'S SEEM TO BE TRAINED TO DO MINIMAL. SO IT'S UP TO YOU TO RESEARCH AND INSIST FOR HELP OR TESTS. MAYBE SWITCH DR.'S
For those of you who discontinued use of levothyroxine, how long did it take before you saw improvement in cystic acne?
OMG. I'm 44 years old and have been trying to figure out why I can't get rid of the cystic acne I developed about three years ago. Interestingly, that is the time I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and got put on levothyroxine. I came upon this site as I was researching Armour thyroid which I'm going to start tomorrow.
I'm very interested to see if my cystic (scar-causing) acne goes away.
An NP put me on 50 mcg after the first blood test, then I got headaches and acne on my face and back, and I missed a period. After 6 weeks, we tested my blood again, which showed TSH = 0. Apparently the high dosage had shut down my pituitary. I switched to 25 mcg, but when I got a second opinion from another provider, she recommended 12.5 instead. This dose has my blood tests in the right range, but the acne is still on my face and back. Has anyone found any good solutions?
I am on my third day of taking levothyroxine 25 mcg and I developed 4 pimples on my right shoulder and one on my forehead.
Yes I think you are correct about raising other hormone levels. I'm experiencing the same thing.
I do on the right side of my cheek and jaw area, I hate it it goes then it leaves scaring occurs,so I went to get medicine and antibiotic's
I've been using. .125mg for the past two weeks and I've noticed pimples on my chin and around my mouth , also some chin hairs.
My doctor said it was the levothroxine. She said my thyroid wasn't working like it was suppose too. And now my thyroid was working like it shold which is putting natural oil to moisturize my skin and that's what causes the acne.
I don't get it. People are more interested in pimples than your underactive thyroid? Really? Untreated underactive thyroid causes way more serious problems all over your body than cystic acne. Yes, I have had cystic acne and I have had problems with underactive thyroid. If there is a safe medicine that takes care of both problem and side effect. I am all for it. But if not, I take the synthroid until something better comes along.
I take 75 and I break out on my scalp and face chin, above my lips, cheeks
Thankyou
I'm 58 and just realized the timing of my dosage increase and these breakout coincided.
I'm calling my doc today.
I have severe acne (never before in my life had it) and I believe it is the levothyroxine
Re: smallestmommy (# 4)
I am on the same dosage and doing the exact same thing! Those horrible under the skin ones are THE worst....I currently have a small mountain on my left cheek ??
Re: Rebeccah (# 2)
I have been on it for about a month as well, and I am getting cystic acne. I have NEVER had acne before. I don't know what to do, I don't want to go off of it, but I can't handle the acne.
ive been taking 25 mcg of levothyroxine for about almost 2 months and all along my jaw line my skin has been breaking out badly, never had acne even when i was a teenager and now my skin is out of control. ive also lost alot of energy throughout the day since ive been taking it. it is indeed this medication is a horrible side effect.
I have been taking 50mcg generic Levothyroxin for 4 weeks and have cyctic acne on my nose. Doctor said there is no connection. I have always had clear skin. Has anyone had better luck with a name brand?
