Does It Really Matter That I Take Oxycodone And Vicodin

I havebeen reading alot about these two drugs over the last 10 years or so. I used to work for EDS, I was placed in a General Motors Plant in Saginaw Michigan. Every thing was fine for about 8 years. Then as the doctors explainded that due to the tools we used the extended times that I had worked. I destroyed what they called the palmer arch. When this occurred over the course of about 6 months, I had to have part of my hand removed because since there was no blood flow into my fingers, they became infected and gaine greene set in. I was off for about 6 months trying to recover. EDS forced me back to work early with out the doctors okay. After returning to work I was bback for two days and my hand started to go blue and other colors. I was sent immediately back to the hospital where they found that there was no blood flow to my hand. After getting scared by some younger doctors who just wanted to cut the rest of my hand off. It was difficult to take.
they did more tests and found that I have a vascular desease caused by the vibrationary tools I had been using the last 10 plus years. They called it Raynaud's, and that it was deteriorative. Again EDS called and said I have to go back to work. I said wait cause the doctors said it was deterioraqtive, their nurse said it will get better and I had to return. So currently I take Procardia, Coumadin, Carvedilol, Nitroglycerin, Nexium, Nuerontin, Extra Strength Vicodin, and Oxycodone. The doasages are substantial as I have been taking these meds now -- this is my 11th year. What I had been told each year we were talked to about drugs in the work place, they would say since I have a legitimate prescription to take it, there is no concern if I take a test and its there. Now I have some very serious concerns about it and how they handled my situation. When things were going good they would tell me I was to important to the department to go out on disability or anything.... Then the economy went south they sold the plant to TRW and the fact I had the longest tenure of any one and I knew the job better thaqn anyone didn't matter. I even helped to write their work instructions before being laid off. I know for sure it was because I was disabled and didn't produce anything tangible. As well as having to take off one day per month to go to doctors appoinments because the pain killers are schedule 2 I think so he cannot write for any refills I have to go in once a month. So as long asyou have a valid prescription they (employers) claim it does not affect whether or not you test positive. I think it is a bunch of crap because the first year I was laid off I could not even get a interviewwith the company I was currently working for (EDS). As soon as they find out you need meds to work as a functioning person they don't care. I was even applying for the same job that I was performing at the Delphi/TRW plant in Saginaw. So yes it does matter even if you have a prescription --- The only good thing now is I finally recieved my full disability through Social Security, at this time it doesn't matter because I don't think I will ever work again. I also counsel my kids, family and freinds to stay away from GM vehicles......

I am very sorry to read of what you have gone through and while it really isn't fair, there are several different concerns that a company does have to take under consideration in these circumstances.

One of them has to do with the fact that, even though it was for legitimate reasons, you were missing work due to the injury and illnesses, coupled with the need for the doctor visits. While these are, as I stated, legitimate reasons, it does affect their bottom line in the long run.

Another concern would be the medications, especially the high doses of narcotics. Yes, you did have prescriptions for them, which made their usage legal, however, they also have to take under consideration how these may affect your ability to work and the safety of your work. If they knowingly let you continue to work, or a connected company that is aware of it hired you and the medications somehow caused you to make an error that caused another injury to yourself or another person, then they could be held responsible.

When it comes right down to it, no big corporation cares as much about their employees as they do their bottom line and an employee that has already been injured, missed work and is on medications that may affect their judgment and safety in the workplace is considered a liability.

I am glad, however, that you have been approved for your disability, so you no longer have to worry about it.

As to the Reynaud's, I also have it and I can personally tell you that the blood pressure/cardiac medications, such as the Carvedilol you are on, will also make that worse. Since I've been on them, there are days where it can be 60 degrees, nice and sunny and if I go out to run to the store, I will have numb hands and feet in just a few minutes.

Some tips to help that are to wear gloves and thick socks on any day where the weather is a little cooler. Those little self-heating disposable hand warmers will also come in handy.

The Carvedilol, with the Nitrogycerin, Coumadin and Procardia also tells me that you have some type of cardiac concerns, which also means no company is really going to want to be responsible for you having a heart attack or something in the work place.

Basically there were many factors working against you here, including that the company knew your medical history and the medications you have been taking, since you had filed for disability and it could not be avoided.
