Does Digitek And Ibuprofen Thin Your Blood?
(Newest replies first)

I'm on metoprolol and digitek. I had a cold so I took ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine. Would this cause thinning of blood? My nose is bleeding and eyes appear very bloodshot.

Re: Verwon (# 2)
Hi Verwon, I forgot to complete your question. Yes, I can take tylenol and Lorcet, Morphine, Demerol and most pain meds. I could not deal with Femtuma; because I felt like I could not breath with those. At the time of incarceration they would give me Ultram which did not bother my stomach or give nose bleeds.
Re: Verwon (# 2)
Thanks for all the replies. I started out at 3 x a day but had more frequent bleeds. Then to two, then one. Every time they took me down one they were less frequent. Finally enough is enough and told the doctor and I think he knew I was right because I wasn't taking anything else. Sure enough when I stopped, so did the bloody nose. So please be aware when you take them.
Dear Digitek, Yes, yes, yes.....Ibuprofen was given to me several times while I was incarcerated. And everytime I received it I woke with a bloody nose. The doctor thought I was BS'ing him. They were giving it to me 3 times a day and every time a nose bleed occurred right after. When I went back to the Dr., he checked my pulse / blood pressure, etc: all ok... but still bleeding. I told the Dr. that it was the Ibuprofen and of course he wouldn't believe me. Then I told him to take me off of all of it. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW! Of course Doctors know it all!
Anyway, your stomach sounds sensitive like mine. I cannot take NSAIDs either without destroying my stomach. Any kind of anti-inflammatory may give you big trouble... ALSO, beware of IRON. Yes good old iron. That will also tear up your stomach too. I have to get IRON INFUSIONS every 3 months. So good luck with your stomach but please be careful when it comes to the meds I mentioned.
Re: Verwon (# 2)
Actually, Ibuprofen does NOT thin the blood. The reason it causes bleeding is due to inhibiting thrombocytes from forming blood clots (coagulation). In fact, Ibuprofen will actually cause the only "blood thinning" NSAID, Aspirin, to lose its blood thinning properties.
Ibuprofen has been known to cause hemorrhage, so yes, it can cause blood thinning, and other issues, according to FDA reports. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, and stomach irritation.
How severe is the nosebleed? Are there the only medications you take? How much Ibuprofen did you take? Can you please post back with more specific details?
Do you frequently get nosebleeds?
Ibuprofen is an NSAID and while it may cause bleeding and change the way your blood forms platelets it does not thin your blood. This is pretty much a characteristic of most NSAIDs. Aspirin is the most common NSAID known to actually think the blood.
