Hi, I have quite a few bottles of polyethylene glycol 5330. I was wondering, they are still sealed tightly and stored well to the instructions. How many years after the expiration date can I still use them? I want to use them in my emergency supply stockpile. Well the little I've started with medical. I think it's a while. I've taken meds that were 4+ years over ex date and they worked fine. Thanks.

I've been searching on the Internet for an answer to my question and came across this page. I give my cat Miralax and it works very well. I don't see an expiration date on the bottle I have but bought it almost a year ago I think. What is the shelf life? Also, it is supposed to be odorless (I thought?), but it has now developed an odor (not bad) - should I assume it has expired? Thank you.

I have used Murilax or polyethylene glycol for more than 15 years, starting out on it 2 doses a day, now I take it once daily as needed. I have bottles that go back to 2016, 2017. I have been told that the medicine may become less potent, but I don’t notice anything different. I use it now every other day or as needed and I find it works better using it when I need it then taking on a daily basis. Also you can take an old bottle and mix it with a newer bottle, the only thing I notice is the older stuff sometimes doesn’t dissolve as good in water as newer stuff but so I have too stir longer is all. After 3 years it’s probably best to get some new stuff and mix it with your old.

According to the frequently asked questions on MiraLAX.com, "It is not recommended to use MiraLAX beyond the labeled expiration date.”
However, I do think some factors influencing its expected shelf-life or integrity may also depend upon how it was stored as well as how long it has been since the product expired. If it hasn't been too long (e.g. a few months), my personal opinion is that it's probably fine, as expiration dates themselves can be arbitrary numbers, but you're still probably better off getting a new batch if you want to play it safe.
Regarding dosing instructions, the usual adult dosing for MiraLAX is one cap full (approx. 17g) taken once daily or as needed. Apparently the measuring line on the bottle cap itself is supposed to be used as a guideline for taking a single dose (which also measures out to about 1 large tbsp). Ref: [1]

I was fine. Considering I had took 7yr old miralax. I'm not entirely sure the miralax worked as well. The next day I picked up a new bottle to keep in the cubbie.

Tania, Per my pharmacist you need to be extremely cautious taking meds past their expiration date, because there are certain ones that will go bad right at the expiration date and they will shut your liver down! One search medication is Lomotil. According to my pharmacist she said to not even take it a couple of days past the expiration date because it becomes toxic to my liver and will literally shut it down.
My dad would not listen to me and he took some expired medication which ended up causing him to wish that he had listened! Most pharmacist will let you know which medication‘s are safe to take after the expiration date, especially if you are a regular customer and I already have a good rapport with them.
