Do You Have To Have A Prior Drug Addiction Problem?

Hello,

I have just one question so here goes! I have been on a pain management program with suboxone for almost three years now due to chronic pain. I do not have a prior drug addiction problem. I say this due to many people think you have to have a prior opioid problem. That's just my question tho. My recent ex broke up with me because he said the only way you can be prescribed suboxone for pain management is if you had a prior drug abuse problem. I told him that was not true by no means but he argues an says he's right. Can anyone please back me up and explain to him in the comments that he is wrong to a certain extent. I would really appreciate it. Thank you and god bless!

Hello, Lyn! How are you?

You are correct and your ex is not.

Suboxone contains the opiate Buprenorphine coupled with Naloxone, while it is commonly used to treat drug addiction, it can also be prescribed for pain relief, it's just not extremely common, because it has relatively mild pain relieving properties, but there are some people for whom it works very well. Prescribing it does not mean that one had a prior addiction problem.

When it comes to pain management, it adds some assurance for the doctor, because the Naloxone in it helps prevent patients from possibly abusing other opiates, since it neutralizes them.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
