Dilemma With 2 Narcotic Scripts From 2 Doctors (Page 8)

Updated

Hi all. I have intractable pelvic RSD, peripheral neuropathy, lumbar facet spondylosis. I live in California and am about to have to change insurances at the end of this month. The new insurance has ridiculously high Rx prices. I go to a PM for all my pain meds, but my primary dr has in the past managed them for me. My question is if anyone knows if I get an Rx for the 60mg Oxycontin twice a day like usual from my PM and then my primary to write a script for 40mg 3 times a day and then I can go to 2 totally different pharmacies and fill one with my insurance and the other at another pharmacy and pay with cash, will that flag the DEA and cause my PM to get a notification of "Doctor shopping"? I am just trying to have enough meds to get me through an extra month until my husbands new job let's us get medical coverage?

I had to do this one other time a year ago when the same thing happened with me loosing my job because I could no longer work and I wasn't married yet to get my husbands insurance. The first 2 months I had no problem, but the third and LAST month I was needing to do it to get me enough meds to last me the 3 month waiting period, my husband forgot and filled both scripts under the same insurance but just at 2 different pharmacies instead of paying cash at the second one. My pain doctor found this out and thank God I was able to explain my way out of it and he didn't discharge me as a patient, but now in this situation again, I'm afraid to try it one last time til we are settled with yet another health insurance. I would really appreciate anyone's advise or experience they could share regarding my situation. I truly am not a doctor shopper, I am just afraid to run out of meds and be in massive pain and / or risk getting into trouble.

You may lose your pain.management. Did you sign a pain contract with the Dr that gave you the Norco? If you did it will be very rare if the Dr doesn't dismiss you. You also may not be able to find a Dr to manage your pain because you broke the contract. Each state has a Prescription Monitoring Program that has your prescription history in a database. It doesn't matter if you go to a different pharmacy. The pharmacists and doctors along with specified others have access to your history. By law drs and pharmacists in most, if not all states have to check the database before writing or filling a rx for pain meds.

I had two scripts from my doctor. One was dated for august 1st and one for september 1st. I got the one for august filled on august 28th and I'm wanting to get the script with fill date on september 1st filled today. Will medicaid pay for this one or do i need to pay cash?

Cassie, if the prescriptions are for the same Med and same dosage Medicaid won't pay for it until it has been 30 days, maybe 29. You also won't find a pharmacist that will fill it. Even if you pay cash and go to a different pharmacy. They have to look you up in your states Prescription Monitoring Program database before filling a Schedule II. The PMP has all the meds you've gotten filled, when, the Dr that wrote them, how long a supply the rx was for, etc

You will be flagged FOR SURE! There is a data base that the pharmacy has to use and you will most certainly be labeled as doctor shopping and you will get nothing filled! Don't risk it!

smallperson. You may not have asked for pain meds but you accepted prescriptions and got them filled. A Dr and pharmacist can see the prescriptions you have gotten filled, the Dr that wrote it, how many tablets, how long it is suppose to last, etc by looking you up in your states Prescription Monitoring Program.

So if you do it once you should be ok. Because We did it a few time and it did not Red Flag. But then again this was in 2012. The Systems might be updated since Prescription Narcotics is now an Epidemic problem in this country. I would say you should be fine because we did it like a said for months.

Yes you will get caught. I worked for a PM Dr as well as a FP Dr. Every drug is put into the computer under DEA website that is pulled up, if not by your FP Dr for sure your pain management Dr. It has nothing to do with cash payment.

Helper, the timeframe for a pharmacist to put prescriptions in the PMP database has gotten shorter in most states in the past few years. And almost all, if not all by now require any Dr that is writing a prescription for pain meds to check the database before writing it.

BL-Since you the expert, how would you handle primary drs. in FL that tell you is illegal for themselves to write for pain meds? Myself & brother are being told is illegal for them(primaries) to write scripts but law does not say that. Now if you disagree with primary he will definitely not write prescription because he thinks he is correct & you are simply a junkie. Cant win-what is your advice on these "God-complex" drs.??

Chris, you could ask him where it states that in Florida Law or Federal Law. You could memorize and or copy the law and site it for the Dr or hand him a copy of it. But if a Dr won't write a prescription, he won't write it. There is nothing you can do or say to change that.

If someone has been.to a number of drs and they all say they won't write a prescription, the problem is not the Dr. Even though a regular Dr can write prescriptions for chronic pain, most chose not to, especially with new patients. Knowing that, it seems like your time and money could be better spent seeing pain management drs.

I have a rx for percocet 5/325 that my primary care dr gives me due to having bad pain for my fibroids. He writes it for 60 pills and within the 10 days of my monthly cycle i finish my pills. Last week my sciatic nerve went out and i was seen in urgent care which they prescribed me norco 5/325. I attempted to fill it at cvs by my house and the pharmacist advised me i am not able to do so since my perocet was filled on 09/24/2015. I tried to explain that those pills are for something completely different and the way the order is written she could see that i no longer have any left due to me taking them exactly how i am supposed to take them for 10 days. she would not fill it. how can i get my norco filled by them or another pharmacy if the percocet i take is for something totally different in which i do not have any left over? PLEASE HELP. I AM IN SEVERE PAIN.

kohls, you can try another pharmacy
If you have signed a pain contract stating you won't get pain meds from.another Dr. getting the Norco filled could cost you your pain being managed.

Does the. prescription for Percocet say take 1 tablet every 4 hours.as needed?

I normally take 20mg of oxycodone twice daily but I ended up in the hospital for a uterus infection that was so bad it hurt all the way in my back and down my leg. The doctor at the hospital said for now my dose needed increased to 30mg four times daily so I have a script that I know medicaid will not cover and honestly now I'm scared to fill it because I don't want to mess up my normal script that I get monthly. ....but if I don't fill it I will run out early because I had been using my 20s and half of one to make them the 30s because I have put off trying to fill the new script from the hospital until I know I won't get into trouble. What should I do?

BL yes the rx says that and so does the bottle but cvs would not fill my other meds

Elizabeth, if you signed a pain contract you need to call your Dr and ask him what he wants you to do. Pain contracts state you won't get pain meds from another Dr. Some drs are stricter than others. You won't know your drs position until you call him and ask. He will know you got it filled when he checks your profile on your State Prescription Monitoring Program Database.
Kohl's, if you still have the prescription info sheet that came from the pharmacy when.you got your percocet filled, look and see how many day the #60 is for. I know you said you take it for 10 day, but the as needed part means that you don't take them every 4 hours. You may want to try a independent pharmacy. They are family and locally owned and.set their own policies with certain things. If you are using insurance to pay for it, that could also be the problem.

Usually a pharmacist will go with the 4 hours instead of the 6 if.it says every 4-6 he's, but not always. For example if you take a med every 4 hrs, that is 6 a day and 60 in 10 days. But if they go with every 6 hrs, that's four tablets a day and 60 in 15 days. Either way you take them if you take the Max for a 24 hour period you would be getting up during the night to take one.
