Dilaudid-i Find It Helpful W/anxiety And I Don't Use It Everyday
UpdatedI was given dilaudid a year ago for rotator cuff surgery. My physical therapy was an incredibly challenging recovery with pain meds required and the vicadin was not enough. I have some leftover 4 mg of the dilaudid.
Theoretically, and statistically it is recommended to throw out all unused pain medications.
I am mindful not to take it daily. I have no side effects and no desire to take it on a daily basis. I have tried clonapin and ativan for anxiety and they feel most helpful as a sleeping aid.
With my occasional (2 to 4 times a week) one 4 mg dilaudid, I feel relaxed, calm and incredibly productive. But I also feel like maybe I am an addict (in denial) and need to check myself into a rehab. In all honestly I have tried anti-depressants and the anxiety meds listed above and dilaudid doesn't make me tired. Only relaxed and ready to work on my quickbooks and get stuff done with calmness and peace I have rarely felt.
Can dilaudid be used, as needed/NOT daily for anxiety? I am keenly interested in thoughts and opinions and would appreciate refraining from harsh or critical judgements/projections in your responses.
I really hate both feeling the anxiety and have some fear that what feels like a solution may not be an option that any medical professional would approve or understand. Plus, from what I have read I don't hear anyone reporting being able to increase their level of productivity and focus with the use of dilaudid. Am I an anomaly? Just seeking clarity. Thanks again for your mindful and courteous consideration.

Great news...judging isn't my job! :-)
What I can tell you is that there is a significant difference between addiction and dependence.
When someone is addicted to a substance, they use it strictly because they like the way it makes them feel, but since those are just side effects, the feeling eventually wears off. Thus, they have to keep taking more and more to get it back.
Dependence occurs when someone relies on something to get a desired effect, such as someone needing a medication to lower their blood pressure or to calm anxiety. They aren't abusing it, but they do need to take it regularly to avoid any problems.
And while it isn't very common, the effects you experience from it have been known to happen in a small percentage of people that take it.

So yes, you are a bit of an anomaly, but no you aren't an addict. With your taking it that infrequently, an addiction clinic or doctor would not even take you on as a patient.
However, you are also right that most medical professionals would not understand, nor would they support such use. Thus, you may want to just talk to your doctor, because you might just need to adjust your dosage of the Ativan, or you may need to try a different medication in that category altogether.

I hope this settled some of your questions. Is there anything else I can help with?
I was given dilaudid after elbow surgery. I quickly found it took my anxiety away , something I've been struggling with for ten years, and at low dosage. Only 2mg a day. I was prescribed Tramacet to continue treating my pain after my 2 weeks of allowed using dilaudid was up and my anxiety came back. No side effects with the Dilaudid except a strangness in chest, not uncomfortable. Tramacet on the other hand made me feel a little crazy at the prescribed dosage so I took less and dealt with pain.
I really hope research happens with Dilaudid for anxiety. It really seemed like a miracle cure. Anxiety sucks! Especially when it seems to happen for no reason. I have a pretty great life other than social anxiety.
