I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

I agree with you. I have ADD as well. I started taking Adderall XR and see a big difference in how I am able to do my work. I am able to sit at my desk and concentrate on my work. Prior to Adderrall I was all over trying to complete my work and just leaving it. I can tell when the medication kicks in my body I get a funny feeling. But as the day goes on I get my job done. So it works for me

i have just recently started taking Amphetamine to stay awake. For years i have been really tired and when waking up i feel like i never slept at all. so i had a sleep test and the doc says i have severe sleep apnea. i am not excessively over weight maybe 15 pounds. after i started using the cpap machine i was still exhausted after waking up so the doc says that sleep apnea will kill the part of the brain that wakes us up and keeps us awake. so he prescribed amphetamine 10mg but try 1/2 pill, if that does nothing go to one whole etc.. up to 2 pills but absolutely never take more than 2 or i would get extremely sick. well 2 pills did nothing so my last visit on friday with the doc he prescribed me 20mg and to take 2 or 3 each morning. i took 2 and stayed awake during church. so i was wondering if anyone else was taking this to stay awake and if it helps them at all. i have started looking at hyperparathyroidism because they suffer from exhaustion as well. does anyone have any experience that i could use? thanks Rico

Your doctor is full of crap. 20mg is not the highest dose. I just filled a Rx for 30mg yesterday. Also, your doctor seems to not know anything about drug interactions and I suggest you get a new doctor stat. Not only did he screw up with your daughter and lie to you about adderall, but he lied about not being able to treat both ADHD and anxiety. I take adderall (well, haven't yet, but about to..I had to switch from vyvanse because I don't have insurance and generic adderall was only $18) for ADHD and also Ativan for anxiety and they mix and work just fine. Your doctor is an i****.

Ok you bunch of lunatics. (JOKING, just JOKING) It's Auntie Rose. I have 51 neices and nephews, just from my four sisters and three brothers, and a couple of their children having more children (only two generations.) A few of them take Adderall, so I asked them if they actually felt better taking this drug. A few said yes, A couple said they weren't really sure, and one of them just stopped taking it. Watching and listening to two of them, probably two of the smarter ones, I've noticed a very big difference in them (for the better.) Anyway, I have a twenty-four year old daughter who just got her Bachelor's degree. She really struggled those four years. I wish I had thought of this Adderall before she started college, because I know it would have helped her. Believe it or not, her pediatrician gave it to her immediately after she and I filled out a questionaire. Yes, shes till sees her pediatrician for, mostly for physicals only because she's never sick. From the very first day she took it, I noticed a difference. This is no joke. She got out of work at 11:00 pm and was talking to me. I noticed the way she all of a sudden seemed so assertive and sure of herself. Unfortunately, she only took it about six times, not consecutively. I keep begging her to stay on it at least a week straight. She said she'll try. I don't want to push drugs on any of my four children, but I saw such a difference in her when she was on the Adderall, that I can't help but want her to take it. If she doesn't want it after a week, by all means, I will never ask her to take anything again. I brought all my children up drug-free, not even giving them Advil, etc. The only time they ever got even Tylenol is if they had a fever, because my oldest boy, who is now almost forty years old went into seizures when he was approx. two yrs. old, because of a high fever I learned my lesson then. Anyway, keep writing. STOP arguing with each other on this site!!!! Now I know where I can go when I can't sleep.

I agree with your statement. Coke is just harder to get in certain cities that have turned to selling H and Oxys. Adderal is just OCD on steroids, just like the energy you get from coke, then you crash on both drugs, then depression, then you're pawning your s*** to buy coke from Detroit that's been 'stepped on' 1 or 2 times.....plus you have to be armed to deal with the fiends, stick-up boys, fake dealers, and trap houses.....been thru it all, including getting home from Southwest Detroit after being robbed, kicked out of my old friends car, almost cut into little pieces when I grabbed the keys to try to keep the punk jacka** from leaving me stranded. At least he dropped me off at the bus station after he knew that he was indeed robbing his so-called friend for 1,000s of dollars..........now, I'm 70+ days clean off Yayo......f*** Pharmecudicals

That is the most off based, generalistic bunch of nonsense. Narcolepsy? That's what I'm taking it for? Funny, my doctor never mentioned that. I take 30mg xr in the morning, put a smile on my face, go to work, and get s*** done. Increases focus and concentration, much less fatigue, Drug abusers are out there. Just like stupid people which I'm sure you know one pretty well. Its an age old story. Prescriptions are good for you if you have a good doctor and can follow direction.

Usually methamphetamine is used for narcolepsy. It comes in a pill form and is completely legal. Desoxyn if you're wondering. This is why methamphetamine is not a schedule II drug in the state of FL It still has a medical use.
I noticed you're giving "speed" such a negative connotation, but people with severe narcolepsy use methamphetamine to get themselves through the day. Who are we to judge somebody based on a disease they were born with?

You are absolutely right about being concerned about your child taking adderal. Adderal works SO different in many people you won't know if it helps unless you at least give it a trial run. The answer is always no until you ask.
my son initially took ritalin at 13. His school work had declined so bad he was held back 2 years. When he got older he was switched to adderal and I can now proudly say he has graduated from his collage with honors.
I also take adderal xr, 30 mg twice a day. I found the morning dose wore of in about 5 hours (I could actually feel the difference) so my doctor prescribed 2x a day for a total of 60 mg a day. I have never had any reservations about taking the adderal because at my proper dose now I feel better. I used to feel that if I tried to focus on one thing I could feel all the things around me making movement and thoughts flying all thru my head and distracting me. With my adderal I still am aware of what is around me, but it doesn't distract me or throw me off balance. I had severe anxiety b4 I started adderal now it is completely gone and I feel wonderful. I say do the trial and error and see what happens. You will never know how the medication I'll improve your life unless you take it.

Having ADHD, does not make you STUPID, this might be hard for you grasp- since you display traits of stupidity. I went through IQ testing for my ADD diagnosis. In parts of the test I scored into genius levels, and other parts were average with one on the border of average to below average. They do this testing along with focus and attention test- to avoid misdiagnosis and rule out and developmental or cognitive delays that can cause similar symptoms. ADHD/ADD does not reduce your IQ, but your ability to focus and organize your thoughts. For myself, there are many behavioral side effects- that cause extreme issues in relationships and careers. Going on adderall has significantly increased my control over the issues caused by my ADD. I agree that there are risks, and it can be abused- but when used in the advised and appropriate form the benefits far out weigh the risks. I was very apprehensive to take any medication, so the amphetamine caused me extreme alarm. I looked into a non-stimulant medication, but it was not covered by my insurance and the cost was extremely above my means. I did research on the medication and disorder before starting adderall. I have tried organic diets, behavioral therapy, and other tools before turning to medication- and the only thing I regret is waiting so long. I requested the time release, because it has proven to be less habit forming since the peaks and valley's of the stimulated are reduced with the time release. For you to compare taking a medication prescribed by a physician to treat a certain ailment, dispensed in a controlled manner by a pharmacist to doing coke or methamphetamine- is like comparing using mouth-wash to drinking a bottle of vodka- sure they both contain alcohol- but one provides a benefit and the other is detrimental. I am aware that people do abuse the drug- by taking too many and in forms other than directed. I have read about people insufflating it, and worse to get a high. That is not okay- but there is a risk of abuse with any medication- not just ones containing amphetamines. Anything from technology, retail, food, attention..... can all become addictive and destructive to someone when abused.

On a side note, people that actually need the drug- do not experience the "high" that can caused addiction experienced by those who do not have the issues it is used to treat. I know this from observation. I can sleep after taking it, function better, and am generally a more pleasant person. This is not the case for someone who abuses the drug.

In reference to the innitial post- there is a difference between the generic and name brand- I have done a lot of searching and cannot tell you exactly why. My doctor did not think there would be. But I started with the name brand, and switched to generic when my insurance switched. My benefits were reduced, and side effects increased- I actually discontinued taking it for a couple weeks- because I was not sure the benefits were worth depending on a medication, (I have always been apprehensive on medicating and prefer to handle as much as I can in other ways). After my lapse- I was reminded what drove me to turn to medication in the first place and spoke with my Dr. She had suggested possibly increasing my dose- but I wanted to avoid that if possible since I was already taking a 30mg XR- I simply paid a little more and went back to the name brand- and have been happy since.

I take 30 mg twice daily and 15mg before bedtime I am so much focused and understanding I feel as if people that never had problems as a child with severe mistreatment and being said , being molested and not having a great child hood would have a whole lot to do with the attention situation in life all I can say is sit down and read a f........., book instead of thinking about how someone else feels and understand that GOD DID NOT MAKE US THE SAME AND I WILL BE THE FIRST TO TELL EVERYONE THERE IS A GOD HE DOES EXIST AND HES AWESOME IN EVERY WHICH WAY POSSIBLE SO BACK THE F...,OFF AND GO PICK ON SOMEONE ELSE FOR THE SO CALLED UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU THINK YOU HAVE GO PLAY WITH YOURSELF IT SOUNDS ALLOT BETTER THAN PICKING ON SICK FOLKS THANKS

I just received the Generic too for the very first time. Dr. just thought I should save some money and if it worked great. If not he will write the Adderol. I searched to see if there was a real difference between the 2.
