Difference Between Adderall And Amphetamine Salts (Page 11) (Top voted first)

I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

I also take adderall salts. I too experience fatigue and find myself taking more just to get moving. What are people that need these suppose to do when they don't have enough to get through the month?

The maximum dosage for adults is 60mg a day when prescribed for ADD or ADHD..that's why they make 30mg tablets & capsules!

While I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to that type of medication (my mom takes the "generic form" same as you except 30mg 3x a day! I have noticed irritability & disoriented behavior in her. I myself have ALWAYS questioned "generic" medication. I truly believe they do not work as good as name brand & the fillers give me horrible side effects including migraine headaches! Unfortunately the medication I take is offered "generic" & surprise surprise that is what insurance will pay for. It discusts me.

My insurance will only pay for generic, and I've been taking Adderall generic for about 5 years to treat ADD & Hypersomnia. I've encountered problems with some of these generic brands, some seem less effective and 1 made by Activis didn't agree with me at all, but that was related to an allergy to a filler/binder used. Best advise, note what brand your taking how and make sure your pharmacy does not do the old switcheroo.

For your un-equip rant there. Look there is a difference in Amphetamine and the street drug, Methamphetamine. It all has to do with the delivery to what? You guessed it, your brain and how it affects the firing order. I have had ADD/ADHD all my life and it has been a nightmare. Ritlan was my first learning disorder pill. I was a kid and it made me a zombie. I take D-Amphetamine Salt and it stabilizes my mind so I can think, remember, react, act upon and even pay attention with out forgetting what was just said. So to the ones who have a problem with it here is my advice. I am 37 years of age and I make my own choices and so should you. Don't take it! It is that simple. Oh and better stay away from Nuvigil as well, it is allot more of a balancing medication at $750.00 for a 30 day Supply, but your drug panels will come back dirty for Amphetamines and Coke! Stimulants that were designed by a chemist in a lab over 10's of years not a Field or someones shed. I take Xanax as well and have since I was 18 legally, and of course anything you do out of ignorance or glutenous behavior will result in you loosing not only your life but possibly your freedom. PLEASE!!!! Take prescriptions as told to. If you have a dependency on drugs and/or Alcohol then always have what I call a friend or loved one who is trustworthy that will distribute your meds as prescribed. I have spent many years in what I call, the day of the Rolling blackouts till it landed me into prison for 10 years. I was the worst and it offends me as a long time I**** to hear a self proclaimed CAC II talk about meds that help people as if they were Methamphetamine or opiates. If I would of had understanding and proactive thinking from my piers Maybe I would of been able to excuse those who Judge the world on there ignorance and news fed knowledge. Pick up a PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) and read about the different situations and needs for meds then cross reference that with Google and you will see. Your aggressive taunt about a medicine to, we the people of the world is like attacking my child verbally cause she takes a kind of vitamin the news told you had one thing that is found to make her grow healthy and strong. Knowledge!

Margarita, it sounds like you or someone close to you have addicting personalities and I am sorry for that. It must be very difficult to understand how extremely smart and healthy people need this medication and still are able not to become addicts, while you or ones close to you struggle with any kind of stimulant, but your struggles and fears doesn't give you the right to hurt, insult or put fear onto others.

Yes, coming from a "God chaser", "Holy Roller", whatever you'd like to call me but in the end, we are all Human. We are all loved by someone, asked not to be judged, looking for answers, and you were too or you wouldn't have been on here to begin with ; ) yes, i have Adult ADD....i still bless you in Jesus name...Amen.

exactly who are you to play doctor. This drug has saved my life and i only take it has directed not for any other reason. Please the only ignorant one is you with your comment. Its not for everyone and should not be taken recreational. but for the Love of God I thank Him.everyday for giving me the courage to take a pill to help my brain focus.

I have to say the best alternative to Xanax is Klonopin opposed to Ativan and Valium for sure. Klonopin simply has a longer half life and really gives similar affects to Xanax in my experience. Ativan and Valium works but tends to give alternate effects rather than Xanax and Klonopin. You may just need to take .5 larger dose than Xanax initially but shouldn't need to take it as frequently.

Hi there, I too have been diagnosed with adult ADD and my shrink also put me on d-amphetamine salt combo 10mg 3x a day and I told her from the beginning that I felt as if it was not working. I finally asked her to just put me on the extended relief and she was going to but I told her never mind that the meds seemed to be finally working, well, until I got my next prescription. I filled the prescription she gave me and started taking it and automatically felt like it did not work. So I started doing my own research by typing in the printed numbers on the pills from the month before and the new script. Finally I started calling the Manufacturers of the pills and ended up talking with someone from Teva Pharmaceuticals and told him my problem. He figured it out for me and told me that the pharmacy must have put the NAME BRAND in the bottle and labeled it as a generic and then gave me the generic with my new prescription. So that is when I realized that the generic was totally worthless and that I am going to have to ask for the name brand. He asked me some questions and I gladly answered them and he said that he would send everything that I told him to manufacturing and that they would do an investigation. So I am trying to let everyone know that they should call TEVA PHARMACEUTICALS and file a complaint that the GENERIC ADDERALL IS NOT WORKING. What I was prescribed is D-AMPHETAMINE SALT COMBO 10mg with a (b 972) on the back. So if anyone who is reading this is having problems with their generic Adderall, Please call this company and COMPLAIN because if you don't they will never fix this problem. The more of us who complain the more of a chance that they will fix this. IT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

No u are wrong. You must know someone who abuses it. It is very far from being in the leagues of coke and methamphetamine. Your comparing apples with apple butter. Adderall is used to treat narcolepsy and chronic fatigue, however its primary purpose is treating adhd and add. I have hypersomnia and my whole life it plagued me with fatigue and chronic depression. I had no idea what was wrong with me. I just started believing what everyone said that I was no good and lazy unable to hold down a job. I self medicated the depression with opiates which increased my problems 10 fold. Further incapacitating me with fatigue more depression and opiate withdrawal side effects. At the age of 31 I went to see a neurologist to find out what was going on A MRI and 3 sleep studies revealed I had a disease known as idiopathic hypersomnia which likely affected me since early adolescence. Adderrol prescribed problem solved. Went from living with mom no girlfriend no money just food stamps to making 80000 annually married with 2 kids new cars new house and pretty much everything else I could want. So no don't detour people from this drug because u know a kid abusing adderrall for a cheap high. It changes lives but not to be abused. Take as prescribed because tolerance develops quickly. Thankfully doctors know proper dosing techniques to prevent or minimize increasing doses.

I appreciate your post. I have a daughter who had been diagnosed since kindergarten but had not been medicated except for a few months intermittently as I myself have the same fear as your mother about medications. I have struggled my whole life with executive function but 30 years ago when I started schooling, life was simpler and my structured homelife led me to academic and athletic over achievement. I failed miserably out of college by simply taking on too much and not being able to manage on my own. Tennis, basketball, band and academic scholarships, 18 pre-med hours at a private school and then boyfriends and trying to work, against my parents wishes. I have always struggled socially and in relationships, as I don't keep up or turn up and in romantic relations im either checked out (bored and absent) or on high drive and 'too much' for my partners. I've chosen to remain single lately due to so many failed ones that I can't tolerate the constant change, the heart break and self esteem crush nor the disappointment that I cause others who see and expect a more than competent woman. I can only manage one or two aspects of life at any given time. I had no idea what adhd even was until my own daughter was diagnosed the first two weeks into school. I was diagnosed alongside my kiddo, and have been in multiple clinical studies since then. But still, im afraid of the medicine.

I've gotten by and had some success. Granite, life feels complicated and hard alot of the time. But there Are many things I like and enjoy about my quirks ..and about my daughters. I do find it depressing at times as others succeed easily and we struggle. (I coach her basketball team & tennis private lessons so I'm constantly helping and seeing others succeed)

As I said, Now, she is in 4th grade and we are in a very competitive and upper class school district in Dallas, Texas area. I'd met many people here who take adderrall both kids and adults. I'm a single mother, no doubt due to my failings interpersonally. So that adds to out struggle.

Long story short, after months of emails with the school district about tardies, absenteeism (yes, it's me as sell) and then 504 plan, ive finally given in and asked the doctor to wrote the script. I'm not insured currently, so we were given the most affordable med... D amphetamine salt combo 20 my @ 2x daily.

I'm planning to do one tab in a.m. every other day. Because I'm afraid. End of the day, I feel she and I both need to know how to get by on what brains we have. I also feel that there is residual effect on the off day ..and I feel that dependancy on anything will lead down the wrong road. Adhd people have unique gifts and i don't want to cripple her ability God given. Mine either. .. We are good people and unique and kind of difficult but we try hard to make others lives brighter and to live out our purpose

Can you tell me any more about your experience with adhd meds ? Have you tried going off of them and seen that life is even harder than before you started? How does it make you feel? Do you long for your old adhd self at times? Do people feel you 'have changed'? And if so, for better or how?

I'm feeling very emotional about this decision and would benefit from an unbiased and non-clinical review of pharmaceutical treatment for adhd..

Anyone out there?..

After taking generic 20 mg in the morning, I was very relaxed, calm and felt stoned. I normally have a lot of anxiety and energy, and fidget and say impulsive things that embarrass me or others. On the medicine, these symptoms were gone but I felt very slow in my mind and was not more effective at my work.

Tried it again a couple days later, only took half, and took it around 10am after being assigned a new project at work. I felt more like myself this time, only slightly in slow motion. I noticed that I had the patience to speak with people clearly and to address things that I normally see as irrelevant (conversation and Bull s*** basically.)

The two benefits I can note right now are that: people find me easier to work with (not that anyone ever despised me; just found me difficult at times) and second, I have the ability to catch small details as for some reason reading comes quite naturally on this medicine. Before, I saw things as a blur. Now they appear much clearer and I read them.

Downsides: I am not creative at my piano when on the medicine. I do not feel inspired when on it. I don't feel compelled to do anything creative at all, actually, including at work. However, it's my creativity and physical talent that has always given me an edge.

I was still late to work all week. That's a big problem.

I'm starting to notice a trend, that the couple of folks who I have talked with about adderall and those who have explained how the drug has helped them, explain their adhd symptoms as add, without cognition, without momentum, without goals.

However, that's not my problem most of the time. Sometimes I lapse into directionless territory but usually not the big issue. My problems on a day to day are:

1) taking on way too much and actually believing I can manage it
2) lots of brain chatter which makes me feel exhausted, spun out and stressed out
3) constantly late - no concept of how much time goes by because I'm lost in space ..thinking about how to solve problems usually, on any level.
4) either absent/bored emotionally and called 'unavailable' or too hyper focused and drive partners crazy. I hyper focus a small problem into a huge hypothesis, or create fictions out of tiny incidents ..or in general, my physical energy is too much for anyone to keep up with at first. Then, once bored, I am prone to cheat or engage in other things. I actually won't even date any longer. I refuse to burden my child, self and others with that disaster. If I need a date to an event, I have a few friends who have Tried dating me who "get it" and don't hate me. It's nice to be understood. Lol

My point here is that I've always had goals. Too many of them. I've always been able to succeed with hyper focus. Without it, I'm lost. Being normal has never been my thing. Granite, the hyper focus does wear off after a duration of time, I.e; 6 months to a year, or after success, then bored. One winning season, then one losing season because there's no drive or focus. But yes, if I can create the hyper focus at any time, it exceeds above most others. It served me well but now, life is changing. Priorities are changing. Grow tired of being alone. Family has grown exhausted of my adhd ways and patterns. I want better relationships. Better peace of mind. Better quality of life, not just thrills.

I will take the medicine that can help. I'm wondering if this is the right medicine. I have not tried or learned about many options. Right now cost is an issue (I missed my window of time to add insurance at work, but can add again in May.) so cost will be less of an issue soon.

I'll try the amph salts and hopefully will get used to being in slow motion. Lol and maybe my life can benefit. It sounds like you are a believer and keep yourself positive.

I used to be much more positive, until my now 10 year old child started struggling with different adhd symptoms. More like yours are explained. Then, felt like a victim. Too many people say fit into a box ...but I personally believe the people saying it aren't much to admire. Just manage stupid tasks better. IQ and management are 2 different things. I recommend science or music field to all add'ers or prepare to lose on account of mismanagement.

I've tried most of the pharmaceutical ADHD medications, you sound exactly like I do.
Vyvanse makes me too jittery to be an effective treatment, I think the release curve is too sharp.
Ritalin made me manic/depressive and had all sorts of negative side effects.
Concentra was okay, but didn't really do much in the way of organization or planning.
Adderall/Amphetamine Salts have worked flawlessly, we've only changed my dosage once due to a shift change (10mg IR when I get to work so I don't have to wait on the time release to function.)

I seriously cannot stress how life-changing this drug has been. It is expensive, but it's also worth it, being that I'm not constantly in fear of losing my job.

I'm still weird, and still all over the place mentally, but I have control over it now and can "Apply myself" to a task.

Check with a really good private pharmacist....by law gen must have a least a certain amount of the specific med but it doesn't need to be 100%. And remember mfg put in different fillers that can affect you.

my son was on the Adderall for years .until they got the generic salts.we did not notice a difference.he was on the extended.and a lot.since age 6 till 18years old.at the end he was on 70 mg a day.it worked.hoped this helped you sweetie.pam

well. I do believe in GOD.but I also think he gives us the smarts to use our brains.if u need insulin,then u need it.if u use high blood pressure meds. then u need them etc. I retired from nursing because of depression.but most of all back pain after surg.if people domt believe in meds. why are they even on here?
