Dexedrine Ir Generic Tabs Discontinued?
UpdatedHi all. I have been taking 30mg/day generic dexedrine IR tablets for 7 years now, and while I've seen a shortage happen occasionally it's always passed eventually. I picked up my prescription yesterday and found the pharmacy had given me ER capsules instead of IR tablets. Its a new-ish pharmacy for me so I figured it was a mistake, but when I asked them about it they told me that the generic IR tabs were discontinued entirely. Is this true? I'm located in California in the US.

@swiftly,
From what I've researched, Dextrostat (which is referred to by some as a "generic" for Dexedrine) was reportedly discontinued by Shire Richwood in 2003. NOTE: the actual generic name is Dextroamphetamine, which seems to still be available from the following manufacturers in both ER and IR dosage forms:
Wilshire Pharmaceuticals manufacturers a 10mg Dextroamphetamine sulfate IR tablet with a National Drug Code of 52536-0510
Teva Pharmaceuticals manufacturers a 5mg Dextroamphetamine sulfate IR tablet with a National Drug Code of 00555-0952-02, and a 10mg IR tablet with a National Drug Code of 00555-0953-02.
Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals manufacturers a 5mg Dextroamphetamine sulfate IR tablet with a National Drug Code of 00406-8958 and a 10mg IR tablet with a National Drug Code of 00406-8959.
Perhaps you could ask around at a few different pharmacies to see if they carry one of those manufacturer's versions of Dextroamphetamine...my guess is that some do and some don't, but it would probably be a good idea to gather multiple opinions on the matter just to make sure everyone is on the same page. Another thought would be to contact each manufacturer to find out if they intend to stop making it anytime soon based on rumors...
Hope this helps!
In addition to the excellent information, in the last post on availability of Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Instant Release Tabs, there are two more options nationwide to choose from: Brand Name "Zenzedi" 10mg manufacturer is Arbor Pharmaceuticals LLC Atlanta GA with a National Drug Code of 24338-853-10. The "Zenzedi" is also available in a wide range of side tablets, 2.5mg, 5mg. 7.5 mg, "10mg", Instant release, as well, as larger mg doses, being 20mg, and 30mg. "I am not sure it the last two mg doses are Instant Release, or are Extended Release. This brand just came out in early 2015. The additional dextroamphetamine sulfate, that is available nationwide, is a 5mg and a 10mg tablet, manufactured as a generic version of the former DextroStat, once made by Richwood Pharma, later by ShireUS, 5mg in a pale yellow tablet embossed RP on one side, and 51 and a score mark on the other side. The DextroStat, 10mg was same color, but embossed RP, and, the other side, was embossed 52 with 4 mini scores, last advertised in the 2007 Physicians Desk Reference on page 334, and page 3180 NDC for 5mg was this 54092-448-01 and for 10mg with a National Drug Code of 54092-448-01 and apparently was withdrawn from the market, after the year 2007.
During the year 2008, it was only produced by a pharmaceutical firm called Physicians Total Care as a orphan drug, only in the 5 mg size with a National Drug Code of 54868-4549-00 in strips of 20 tabs, or a National Drug Code of 54868-4549-01 in blister strips of 60 tabs, still marketed as "DextroStat" after being on the retail market since 1994. The 2nd and final 2015 available dextroamphetamine sulfate tablet in 5mg is manufactured by Core Pharma LLC, Middlesex, New Jersey 088846 USA with a National Drug Code of 64720-215-10 also available in 10mg instant release with the National Drug Code of 64720-216-10. Thus I count with knowledge of the former post, there are now 5 potential competitors for instant release dextroamphetamine sulfate, IMHO to replace, the gold standard (to me) the former SKF embossed E-19 orange or a dark pink heart shaped 5 mg pill manufactured for 62 years by Smith Kline French (later Smith Kline Beecham) later Glaxo Smith Kline, who chose to eliminate this Orange Book rated AA top of the line instant release Dexedrine tablet during approximately the first quarter of the year 2009. With the excellent, Orange Book rated Dextrostat, also eliminated, by the last big manufacturer Shire US by the end of 2007, Physicians Total Care was were hard to locate during 2008, and there was a shortage of pure 100% dextroamphetamine, of manufacturers, until about the year 2013.
Personally, I have been on C-II stimulants for 21 years in a row, and, always liked both the former Dexedrine 5mg and Dexedrine Spansules, "for years and years" consistently reliable by either Smith Kline Beecham or Glaxo Smith Kline. I also in this time frame made a partial conversion to another formulation, of the 4 different amphetamine and dextroamphetamine salts, as, marketed, as Instant Release Adderall, once by Richwood, later by ShireUS, and eventually by Barr Labs, which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Teva Pharma in December of 2008. I used both Teva/Barr "generic Adderall" I/R 10mg, and Teva/Barr Dextroamphetamine extended release 15 mg capsules, for several years, when the price of in general all stimulants with any amphetamine in them started to skyrocket, after many years of stability. During 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 +. After stabilizing on just Teva with the old Barr embossed instant release generic Adderall for about 5 years in a row, 3 x 10mg per day, I was told by my insurance company, they dropped all forms of mixed amphetamine salts, namely Adderall generic, entirely from my insurance formulary, in February of 2015. The price rose to nearly $200.00 per month for 90 tablets, from a former co-pay of only $20.00 per month.
My Psychiatrist, suggested for me to try Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Instant Release pure 100% tabs, thus, I am now experimenting with differenet brands, and yes, I do notice a change in how my body reacts to the formula. It has been some years since I have tried, the former Dexedrine 5mg I/R tabs, I remember with very instant results and consistant. It perhaps is too new to rate, but I have struggled to adapt thus far, with my first attempt with Wilshire Pharmaceuticals, 10mg generic dextroamphetamine, and two months later switching to Barr embossed, by Teva, the 10mg Dextroamphetamine Sulfate instant release. It is a mixed bag for me, thus far, I am surprised that both Wilshire, and especially Teva/Barr 10 mg for me take at least one full hour on a empty stomach for me to experience the focusing effects of the drug, but indeed, to me dextroamphetamine Instant Release is thus far "smoother, and more calming" than the Adderall Instant release I took every day for the past 5 years, however, I find it less energizing, than I expected, and, both Wilshire and Barr/Teva wear off "gradually and softely" after the 3rd hour, and by hour 4 I am unfocused, and, in a trance like state, like, just unmotivated, thus my need to take another tablet, and the time it takes to refocus, is what I am trying to adapt to, as it still takes about 45 minutes to one hour to feel the effects of tablet number two.
I was actually fearful at first, the 10mg of pure dextroamphetamine would be too powerful, causing me anxiety, but that has not been the case at all. I actually have returned to drinking coffee, in hopes of getting the focus and attention I need to attend to the daily chores of responsible living, otherwise, I am very lethargic, and scattered if I don't have a prescription stimulant. The Adderall 10 mg, to me in instant release from by Teva Barr, took effect more quickly, and also lasted about a full hour longer, than the technically stronger pure Dextroamphetamine 100%. I like feeling "calmer" on this new change, as I often got on occasion, agitated, on the Adderall Instant Release taking it three times a day 3 x 10mg, and the lack of intensity, I call perhaps, a tad overly motivated, or high wired on Adderall I/R, I thus far never experience on this Dexedrine, it borders making me lazy. For this reason, I am going to try all versions in the marketplace, with Mallincrodt, Core, and finally, Arbor's "Zenzedi" marketing name, likely more expensive, to see which one I adapt to the best. My M.D has also cut me down to a 21 year low of only a total of 20 mg per day now of Instant Release Dextroamphetamine, thus, I continue to try to adapt to the effects of this drug, and the outrageous, to outlandish markup's of many C-II especially branded ADD or ADHD products. Even the generics have increased in price one will notice if they don't have insurance and are paying cash, radical increases on some products.
If they are discontinued maybe they can be imported. I always got 5mg's in Europe. They are supposed to be available in the US but I've never seen them.
