Decline Surgery For Breast Cancer Due To Age
UpdatedI'll be 84yrs.old in a few weeks and weigh 87lbs. Have been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Dr. had to look real hard to find it, no lump detected but advised surgery and lymph node removal and radiation. I've been looking on the web and I think I have a bigger chance of dying from other causes than breast cancer at my age and weight. I'm active (golf twice a week) and healthy now and don't think I would be after surgery. Anyone else in this situation or has been?

Really, at your age both the surgery and cancer treatments are likely to be more rough on you than the cancer itself.
To be honest, if it were me and I was 84, I'd say no and would choose to live whatever time I had left not being sick and miserable.
My dad is 83, he'll be 84 in January and he often tells his doctor no in regards to various treatments and such that he suggests. He just doesn't think some stuff is worth going through at his age and I support him in that.
I feel that at your age, you've earned the right to decide what you do and do not want to deal with and, as long as you are of sound mind, it is your decision in the U.S.

Ultimately the decision is up to you and I don't want to try to persuade you one way or the other, but in accordance to what I said above, I do see your point.
I also have to add that being so tiny, just 87 pounds is going to make the treatments and surgery even harder on you.
They didn't give you any other treatment options? Did he even biopsy it to see if it's cancer or something benign?
Thank you for your reply. Yes, there was a biopy, diagnosed as cancer. It was so small Dr. had a hard time finding it.
