Day 1 Of Xulane Instead Of Ortho Evra (Top voted first)

Updated

I HATE this new patch already. Did not adhere to my skin as easily as ortho and came off about 4 hours after applying. I've been on ortho evra for 5 months loved it and never once had a problem but I already can't stand xulane and so I don't know what I'm going to do ! :(
My insurance switched me to xulane because it's the generic brand to ortho evra. This sucks I hate life.
Ps. I'm 18

I just got switched to Xulane since my insurance doesn't cover Ortho anymore. It only covered it for 1 month and then it stopped. I have been on Ortho for 5 years and I am scared to try Xulane from just the comments I'm reading. I also had a friend who switched from her bc pill to a different pill and it messed up her skin so bad. Has anyone had skin issues (acne) since being on Xulane? Also do you know of another alternative form of bc that has the same hormones etc that would work as an alternative?

I. HATE. IT. I was switched over without being informed, it falls off in every shower, everytime Im exercising it comes loose, I get hives at the application site, it has writing on it aaaand when I bend over it comes up in the middle and sticks to itself like a piece of folded tape! I didn't have any problems the 10yrs I was on ortho evra.

I was on Ortho Evra for 3 years before they switched me to Xulane. I was switched to Xulane 3 years ago, and the only problems I have had were issues with the patch adhering. No acne, no weight gain, no mood swings (no PMS at all, really), no headaches, lighter flows, weaker cramps, and shorter periods (2-3 days instead of 4-5).

I feel it's really important to remember that different medications will react to different people in different ways. If you're having problems with Xulane, switch to something else. I was switching birth control regularly before I found one I loved. If you're experiencing any negative side effects, report them to the manufacturer and then ask your doctor to help you find something else.

To the women demanding the discontinuation of Xulane, stop. Act like adults. Just because a medication isn't reacting positively with YOUR body's chemistry doesn't mean it should be denied to everybody. It works fine for plenty of us, you're being selfish.

I have been on my period for ten day so far. This is b.s. The pharmacy said it was the Same as ortho evera. If it is the same why is my body reaction different? The active medicine listed on the box is the same it the amount is different.

I HATE HATE HATE XULANE! There are serious problems with this patch and I want Ortho Evra back. I've had a 2 month spotting and bleeding situation that will not end it doesn't even last a full week and it's absolutely terrible. I am buying Ortho Evra instead of the generic just to not have to deal with these problems anymore. This product has not had the proper R&D and it's only in the market place because pharmaceutical companies are greedy. I wish there was a way to boycott it.

I'm 22 and I was on ortho evra for a YEAR and they changed me to this Xulane and good god I hate it. After a week of the switch I was in the emergency room passing clots and feeling like I was in labor, they thought I had PID and put me on antibiotics which kicked my ass even worse, but the bleeding stopped, and yesterday I was cleared to stop taking them because all my labs were negative for any sort of infection of the lady parts. And this morning I'm bleeding and cramping again. Never ever ever did I have this issue of bleeding on ortho evra I loved it but this stupid xulane was barely released in April I think it's bulls*** and because of it I know I keep getting sick.

I hear you. I've been on Ortho Evra patches for 10 years & I was switched to Xulane. The ends stopped sticking after the first workout. I made it almost a week before the darn thing came off. I do NOT recommend Xulane if you are remotely active!

@Me (post #4),

I'm surprised that more doctor's and pharmacists don't already mention this to patients, but even if they are technically the same drug, there could still be significant differences in the "inactive" ingredients found in each medication. In many reported cases I've found, its been stated that binders and fillers may impact absorption levels, bioavailability, and even allergic reactions in those with known sensitivities. Not to mention that the FDA also permits generic formulas to vary by as much as 20% from the active ingredients in brand formulas; perhaps enough to cause a different reaction in some individuals.

Have you contacted your doctor about this?

I just left an appointment regarding the bleeding and discomfort from the change. Apparently ortho evra was 'blacklisted' because it was causing cancer. The amount of active ingredients was decreased with hope of having the same birth control effects without the cancerous side effects. The more I hear disappoints me and even tho I loved the patch I think I will be discontinuing it.

That would be a great idea but the instructions and my doctor stated that you aren't supposed to use anything to reinforce the patch staying on.

I'm the one who created this post, and I am so surprised to see how many people are also having the same issues I had, and others even having worse issues !!

I don't think it's right that they can just try and switch any of us without consulting us or our doctor's. Especially just so insurance companies can save a few bucks and we can save a few bucks on a co-pay.

With Ortha Evra my co-pay was $60 (I have crappy insurance) and with Xulane my co-pay was $60 so for me I didn't benefit at all what's so ever !!

Well, the doctor I go to for my birth control specializes in women's health; and she can accept almost all insurances just like a regular office, but she can also run things through as if it was Planned Parenthood. After two months of trying to give this new brand a try, I finally called her and had her write me a perscription specifying "Ortho Evra ONLY" that way I won't be switched again !!

I'M SO HAPPY TO HAVE ORTHO EVRA BACK !!!!!! I FEEL GREAT (: No more mood swings, irritated skin, or abstaining from intercourse with my boyfriend because my patch is constantly falling off and I'm worried. LOL I know it seems silly to put so much on a birth control but I feel like I have my life back ! (:

After being on Ortho Evra for 9 years, I too was switched to Xulane...I hate it I had 2 patches come off when I was in the shower. Some women have said they stick right back on, mine wouldn't. Also since the patches are smaller I've noticed they bend and fold easier, and also stick to my clothes all issues I never had with Ortho. I didn't read the reviews on this patch at first because I figured like any other generic brand of something it would be the same; I was sadly mistaken. This patch made me grouchy and hungry all the time and I also gained weight. Then I started reading about the extended periods women were having and I thought that was weird because that was the one side effect I didn't have... in the 2 months I've been on this horrible patch mine never came at all other than the dark pre tinge (as my doctor calls it). Well yesterday I found out why...Yep I'm pregnant. Used this new patch the same way I had with Orhto all those years and never had an issue. Now this.

To anyone who became pregnant b/c of this drug: you're entitled to sue.

dritoday.org/feature.aspx?id=596

Recoverable damages vary from state to state. Thirty-one of the 42 states that recognize a cause of action for wrongful pregnancy permit the plaintiff to seek damages to compensate for the pregnancy and childbirth, but prohibit the plaintiff from seeking recovery for the cost of raising the child. These “compensatory damages” include (1) the expenses of the unsuccessful contraceptive procedure, device, or pill; (2) damages for pain and suffering related to the unwanted pregnancy; (3) the medical cost of delivering the child, as well as the pain and suffering associated with the delivery; (4) the woman's lost wages; (5) damages for emotional distress related to the pregnancy and delivery; (6) damages for injury or death of the woman as a result of the pregnancy; and (7) damages for loss of consortium.

"All states that recognize a cause of action for wrongful pregnancy allow the plaintiff to recover compensatory damages."

Hi, I'm a pharmacy technician at a CVS and let me start by saying, it's not our fault. Unless the doctor writes DAW "Dispense As Written" then we have to fill generic. I am also on the patch. Absolutely LOVED ortho evra!! And HATE this generic crap. But not even we knew about the generic coming until we ordered ortho evra and it came instead. Anyways, don't blame your pharmacy. They're just doing what they have to do. Contact your dr and get a new rx for brand only. But you may have to contact your ins company also. When we bill them, we have no idea what they'll cover. All we do is bill and they pay what they want. Sometimes we can do an override to get the brand at the generic costs, but we have to have approval first. Then again sometimes you just have to pay since "there's a generic available." Just depends on your plan and how much your ins company cares about their customers.

I'm wondering if the problem is that everyone seemed to have been on OE for a long time before switching. I read the OE was discontinued due to the amount of hormones it was releasing was too excessive and deemed dangerous. Though I don't think our doctors should be telling us that Xulane is the same because it does have less hormones, and also does NOT stick. I am constantly getting wrinkles and edges lifting up. Since putting it on my back I've had a lot less problems, though. But still, should have freedom to put it where we're comfortable with it. I never took OE and I'm not having any of the problems everyone else is having and I've been using Xulane for a few months. Maybe it's the switch over that is the problem, your body doesn't like the change in amount of hormones. I will have to see how well my body handles it the more I use it, but so far I'm not having any of these symptoms at all.

Well I'm starting my third xulane patch this Friday and I don't think I'm even going to use it. I think I'm just going to switch to a different birth control method. The issue I have is that with progestrin only type birth control I get extremely excessive and constant bleeding which is bad because I'm anemic so the depo and implant are not good choices. And oh boy I'd get pregnant for sure with the pill because I won't be able to remember a daily pill... I'm thinking of switching to the skyla iud and just asking my doctor to pair it with an estrogen pill because that way I'll be protected with or without the pill but also be able to counteract the negative side effects of the progestrin.
Have any of you used an IUD what's the experience there ?

I've been on ortho evra 10 yrs and then I get this random xulane from my mail order rx company. I called because I get bad reactions--They claim it's the same....I've been having horrible cramping and spotting which I've never had before! I hate this and will now have to wait til Monday to call Dr due to holiday weekend! Ugh!

I started using more than a week ago. Second day after I put Xulane I started nausea and lowerbqck pain. Called my dr. today and make appointment. I finally took it off after an hour I get off the phone. I was throwing up while driving. Never had problem with pills before. Xulane makes me feel like I am on my 1st trimester (pregnancy) LOL I am sure I am not pregnant. My tests are all negative.
