I'm trying to find out the cost of one pill of samsca (tolvatan). My family member is on it for hyponaturemia & has cancer as well. I'm not happy with the rehab this person is in as a result of the cost of this med.

The price, of course, can vary depending on where the medication is obtained, it will not always be exactly the same at all pharmacies or care facilities, however most drugs are quite expensive.
The main use of this drug is to treat, as you said, those low blood sodium levels. You may wish to ask if there are any alternative treatment options available.

I have someone in India asking for this drug since his father is terminally ill from a kidney disease (I am in US). The doctor asked to find out if they can buy from somewhere since the alternatives are not working for the patient. Can someone suggest how I can buy this drug in US (I know it has been approved here now), and do I need to consult a doctor to get a prescription? Will he prescribe even though the patient is in India? Also, can I just get prescription from India and buy online? If not use the prescription to contact a doctor here for more help.

Sono anch'io in attesa di Samsca (Tolvaptan) ed ho avuto informazioni dalla Otsuka Pharmaceutical Europe, la quale mi ha riferito che e' venduto in Germania, Svezia e Inghilterra. In Italia si puo' avere pero' da una farmacia ospedaliera. Sto attendendo questo farmaco poiche' e' stato approvato dalla Commissione Europea il 9 agosto 2009 e quindi e' possibile averlo.

La Otsuka invia un formulario che il medico di base deve compilare assumendosi gravose responsabilita'. Fatto cio' bisogna trovare una Farmacia ospedaliera che lo ordini. La cosa e' complicata e sembra fatta apposta per dissuadere la gente. Che cosa ostacola la commercializzazione del farmaco se viene indicato addirittura per lenire i dolori delle mestruazioni? C'è qualcuno che puo' aiutarci?

My father is in need of Samsca for low sodium due to lung cancer. This drug is cost prohibitive, not covered by his medicare. We have been quoted $2,600 for 10 tablets at our local pharmacy. Is there an alternative medication available for low sodium? Something similar with a lower price point?

My grandmother needs this drug and the lowest we have found so far is around 10k for 30. For some reason her insurance will cover it as long as she is in the hospital but if she is discharged they will no longer cover. Strange, but we are trying to find it at a decent price so she can come home for a little while. If anyone finds something affordable please post!!

There is NO other medication out there used to treat this issue that Samsca is used to treat. It is a fairly new medication which has recently gotten FDA approval. There are NO generic medications. NO insurance covers this medication, unless you are admitted in the hospital and being treated.

My husband is on Medicare Part D using Humana as a provider. Cost per pill is a little under $300.00 -- about $2900.00 per month....which means he pays for about two months and then pays 20% of the total cost. Hope this helps.

This is not true. Conivaptan is similar--it is not a selective V2 AVP receptor antagonist like Tolvaptan, but a V1A/V2 antagonist. I have no idea whether it's cheaper, probably not.

It is approved in the treatment of hyponatrimia, however, it is a useful treatment option in Congestive Heart Failure as well and is approved also in CHF.

Given the cost of Samsca, we had to look for an alternative to treat my mother's hyponatremia. I found this and similar articles:

It turns out that urea is a much lower cost - a month's supply is about the same cost as one Samsca - and has been used in Europe for decades to treat hyponatremia and has similar efficacy to Samsca. We found a supplier by the name of "ure-Na" and a nephrologist familiar with the drug (actually its a medical food, so can be purchased over-the-counter). Three months in and so far, so good!

Tolvaptan 15mg by Zydus Cadilla (brand name Hyponat O) is approx. GBP 4 for 10 Tabs. 30mg is almost double. So it's by a different company but same drug ingredient and potency. It is a reputed company with huge exports to US and Europe and almost all plants are UD-FDA approved. (I have been prescribed it for Hyponatremia as I am on a no salt diet due to polycystic kidneys).

Just found out that there is a brand of Tolvaptan tablets in India 'Hyponat O' from Zydus Cadilla that is priced INR 390/- for 10tabs of 15mg, i.e approx $ 0.50 per tab. Others are approx same price for 4's in India. Available even online on Netmeds, 1mg etc.

even I have PKD (early stage, diagnosed 3yrs back with creatinine still at 1.0-1.1) and my Nephrologist has prescribed Tolvaptan today but only 7.5mg a day (1/2 tab). The price in India is approx 100/-, i.e. 1.5$ a tab
