Chronic Pain Patients Must Get Organized To Lobby For Their Rights. (Page 5)

Updated

People with chronic, intractable pain are being discriminated against and it is imperative that we join forces to fight for our civil rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Please send information on existing associations and organizations that can help or how to establish one that can help pain patients fight for their rights with petitions, letters; emails to send to these state and federal politicians that are determined use prescription drugs, doctors and pharmacies to further their political careers. Drug abuse is not the same as opiate dependent because of chronic pain management and there are over 100 million people living with pain and many of us are unable to live without medication. If the deaths from abuse seems high, the suicides from pain patients that are unable to get relief will be significantly higher. If we do not fight these governors (Colorado's Hickenlooper is a perfect example) and federal agencies that are discriminating pain patients we will be even more victimized. Obviously these politicians no little about pain and they are not aware that chronic pain patients are voters. The statistics used to support their claims regarding deaths from prescription medications are seriously skewed and lacking in additional factors that contributed to the deaths. Compromising the doctor/pharmacy and patient relations is not the government's job; as John Boehner stated government needs to stay out of healthcare and let the trained healthcare professionals make decisions regarding their patients not some politician looking for recognition.

Re: Kelly (# 53) Expand Referenced Message

I wish I would have read and responded to you prior to your pm appointment. I would have said, don’t say a word, just mentioning the word opioid to your dr is a big red flag. I asked my pm. Dr to change the meds I’m on due to their ineffective poor “new” reconstituted formula, he decided to cut me off! He informed me that “pain medication actually makes your pain worse!" Yes, this is the bs we are being fed, lies on lies, it amazes me that these drs graduated from advanced courses in the treatment of chronic pain, receiving certifications allowing them to treat chronic pain, years and years of studying how to treat pain thrown out the window. The new way: let the chronic pain patients suffer. Tell them that opioid treatment is bad! UN FREAKIN REAL!!! My new Moto: save the addict kill the chronic pain patients!

I hope your appointment went well and you weren’t thrown to the curb.

Yes I hear that. Me too. I’m sick of them cutting me down. I always took my meds responsibly so all these changes are doing nothing but hurting all of us.

And they like to "conveniently" forget that THOUSANDS of people DIE each and every year due to the toxic effects of Tylenol! I just read that acetaminophen is THE BIGGEST cause of liver failure leading to DEATH in the USA!!

Re: pessimist (# 71) Expand Referenced Message

I was just dropped from a pain management practice by the MD who owns over 50% of this practice. I'd been a patient for nearly 5 years. He claimed he would wean me over a 2 month period. However, when my insure company required reauthorization he took his sweet time and when I went to an appt having worn a 50 mcg patch for 4 days he said I was detoxed, we all know that's untrue, canceled the order for the lower dose and said I'd require no more appointments. This is malpractice. I'd like to find an attorney.
Recently I participated in the DEA meeting for chronic pain patients to make their voices heard. DEA will be taking further testimony through mid August. Please get your information/condition and treatment submitted. They need to know what the CDC so called suggestions are doing to chronic pain patients. I'd also suggest that you copy it to your Governor, Lt Governor, State Legislators, CDC, FDA, our President, and members of Congress. Best wishes to you I need to limp to hang my head over white porcelain.

I’m with you My PCP recently booted me out of her clinic. She put me in Norco 5/325 5 years ago as she said that’s all that would work for my chronic osteoarthritis pain. Never once ran out early ( in fact have extra left over every month) or lost a prescription. I asked her twice about a long acting pain med, that was it. Her words “ I think you should find another primary care provider”.

Thanks, thanks for caring about me. She never even bothered to give me my latest PAP results which had some questionable cells. She is a prime example of doctors fishing for money only. Wish me luck for finding a doctor who cares in Cleveland,Ohio area.

Hi. My doctor says “the pain medication isn’t working for you anymore”. I asked him “how come I feel better when I am using it then when I am not”. His response “it’s all in your head - placebo effect”. I didn’t know that you could imagine withdrawal symptoms from a placebo. These excuses make the patients feel like idiots. I prefer the truth. I wish you well and hope you get medication that will relieve your chronic pain.

And I love when hey throw the term hyperalgesia at you. Or how deadly of a medication it is and should try and stop. Dude, if I was going to abuse this bed I would have been dead four years ago.

Yes and I’m sure they will somehow link that statistic to the Tylenol in the various pain meds....{eye roll}....utterly ridiculous

Re: Hop63 (# 86) Expand Referenced Message

I wonder how many pm drs actually think we believe the lies and bs being shoveled on us. I just want to be treated with the respect that I have always given the medical team that has, up until recently, treated my chronic pain issues. It’s a total slap in the face to be treated like a criminal and sentenced to a life of debilitating pain and for what reason? I feel like I live in a third world country. Is this the new America, where drs slam doors in the face of pain? I guess if I were to LIE and say I was an addict and I’m addicted to my pain pills, there are many special programs for that here in my state of WI. Our governor signed (from what I heard) 32 new bills to fight the chronic opioid epidemic in this state. I’m sure that not a single one of those bills is a positive note for chronic pain and the people living with it.

I hope something gets off the ground. Australia may be the next to deprive genuine chronic pain patients from severe pain relief.

Re: Tina (# 87) Expand Referenced Message

Don’t forget to add that before starting on the meds years ago, would any of us had taken the prescription if they said “here’s a prescription for something that is highly addictive, could cause seizures or death”?” No I don’t think so. Also, back then pharmaceutical companies were giving them incentives as well as “wining and dining” doctors to get then to prescribe medications such as fentanyl.

Well can you tell people where to write, who to contact? Drs are not listening. I have a spinal cord injury and the pain management dr cut my medicine so he won’t be questioned by the DEA about any of his records. He could care less about the pain I live in. And you are right, chronic pain patients will start to commit suicide, and it’s our Government’s fault that they are over stepping their bounds! I’m tired of being told antidepressants take pain away. That’s a load of crap. All they do for me is make me angry and volatile!

I agree w/you...I've been on opiates for 6yrs due to injury on the job. I'm currently on Disability. My Dr has always allowed me to take 2 every 6 hrs o n Norco n Tramadol. Now he's reduced it to 1 every 6 hrs. That does nothing for me!! I'm still in pain. And I don't know what to do. Pls help0+

Re: Tues (# 78) Expand Referenced Message

Aren't they already doing that by telling us what size soda's we can buy? (the extra large ones?)

They keep chipping away at our rights, a little at a time, and here we are as a result.

I heard today on my radio "....the DEA announced marijuana leads to opiate addiction."

WHAT?

Interesting reading.... just google this and prepare to be angry!

Drugs of Abuse, A DEA Resource Guide

"....is designed to be a reliable resource on the most commonly abused and misused drugs in the United States. This comprehensive guide provides important information about the harms and consequences of drug use by describing a drug’s effects on the body and mind, overdose potential, origin, legal status, and other key facts."

"The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) places all substances which were in some manner regulated under existing federal law into one of five schedules. This placement is based upon the substance’s medical use, potential for abuse, and safety or dependence liability."

"Once the DEA has received the scientific and medical evaluation from HHS, the Administrator will evaluate all available data and make a final decision whether to propose that a drug or other substance should be removed or controlled and into which schedule it should be placed."

ONE person is making this decision? When did we give up control of our lives? How do we get it back? I don't want to die, but I hate this pain...

Re: Tues (# 78) Expand Referenced Message

I take exception to the entire DEA article... this one is one of the worst. It seems they can circumvent laws, take matters into their own hands-which they've done, and answer to no one.

Emergency or Temporary Scheduling

The CSA was amended by the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984. This Act included a provision which allows the DEA Administrator to place a substance, on a temporary basis, into Schedule I, when necessary, to avoid an imminent hazard to public safety. This emergency scheduling authority permits the scheduling of a substance which is not currently controlled, is being abused, and is a risk to public health while the formal rule-making procedures described in the CSA are being conducted. This emergency scheduling applies only to substances with no accepted medical use. A temporary scheduling order may be issued for two years with a possible extension of up to one year if formal scheduling procedures have been initiated. The notice of intent and order are published in the Federal Register, as are the proposals and orders for formal scheduling. [21 U.S.C. § 811 (h)]

Another excerpt from the DEA Resource Guide, 2017:

Quotas...DEA limits the quantity of Schedule I and II controlled substances and specific List I chemicals (pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine) that may be produced in the United States in any given calendar year for legitimate medical, scientific and research needs, inventory, and lawful exports. By utilizing available data on sales and inventories of these controlled substances, and taking into account estimates of drug usage provided by the FDA, the DEA establishes annual aggregate production quotas for Schedule I and II controlled substances and the List I chemicals pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine.
