I stopped taking it in April of 2010 and only for 2 weeks and it isn't my system anymore it just screwed up my mind enough to make a complete mess of my life... I thank God everyday for my boyfriend. I have a very hard time leaving my house even to just go out in the yard. I have to psych myself up and sometimes that doesn't even work. It doesn't stay in your system long but for some of us who took it, even if for a short time, mentally unstable, for lack of better terminology.

I stopped chantix 4 days ago, I had taken only 1 pill for the week prior, but 2 times a day since my quit date 6/5/12. You can see I was only on this drug for about 6 weeks. I am a miserable person. I wonder if I will ever be happy again. Besides the depression and feelings of helplessness, all I want to do is sleep. I could smoke easily if I had a cigarette. It's amazing how this works, but sad at who you become. I don't feel better, actually have walked several 5k's while being a smoker, now I'm winded on a short walk?? It makes no sense. My friend has also quite doing Wellbutrin and patches...she's has happy as can be, feels better and sticking to not smoking. I never dreamed this would happen. I have considered some Wellbutrin to see if it would help with the left over side effects but not sure if that's what I need to do. And yes, I'm a retired professional working a few hours a week...but having trouble doing that..was late for work yesterday after just talking to the secretary about what time to be there!??? It just totally left me after 30 minutes. I have word finding difficulties and I talk to my husband like he's a dog. My anxiety is out the roof. This is one miserable way to live....so being a non smoker via chantix is healthy? I think not. This drug should really not be prescribed at all...it's right up there with Effexor. Good luck folks!

I just wanted to give an update. There really aren't many sources for "after" chantix.. I finally gave up the drug...I was so nauseated last week. I posted a few weeks ago, I did quit the drug in July, smoked for 3 days...started back on chantix. It's been 5 weeks now. I am smoke free for the time being. I don't want a cig but today is the 1st day I've kind of felt normal. I've gained 6 lbs...had no energy and cranky does not describe me. I feel better today. I hope each day gets better. I hope my life can get back to normal. I less than a year I've gotten off Effexor which might be as hard as quitting cigs and I've quit smoking. I will try to give updates just so those taking the drug can have hope...OR run scared. Good luck all.

Still smoke free. Still feel down and out. Happy this thread is helping others =) One day I will talk to a doctor and get on an anti anxiety. I have started yoga and meditation to deal with the anxiety that I now have after taking chantix. I DO NOT want to take any drugs that have side effects. You should understand from the side effects of chantix. I have seen people post about wellbutin.. Does it really work? Do you get side effects?

I was also very leary of another drug but for me wellbuterin works. The side effects are I am dependant on another med now. I got off smokes so I would not be dependant on a drug. Now I need wellbuterin to balance it out after chantix. I will notice I am a little wired at bedtime once in awhile but that's all. Keep trying until you find what works for you. Honestly my doctor said that when chantix goes bad on someone it would not be likely that counseling or diet or wellness lifestyle could fix it becuz the chantix causes a chemical imbalance. Good luck!

I hate to say.. It may never be completely out of his system. I took it twice and I am not right. I worry alot and have anxiety now. It has been a few years. He will get better, but he will never be exactly the same. I hate to be the bearer of bad news.

I think the commercials describe the effects but not the extent of the effects other than suicide. If they would say "chantix may cause permanent brain damage" people would think twice before taking it. I don't see how permanent brain damage from chantix is any different than brain damage from street drugs. Hang in there people. My prayers go out to you.

I used chantix for 3 months with some very minor side effects (occasional nausea, gas, bloating) that subsided when I stopped taking chantix. I have been smoke free for almost a year and was very pleased with this. However, I have been seeing my doctor for nerve pain & I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I am not sure if I agree with this diagnosis so my doctor and I have been looking further into the causes of my pain. We have actually traced the start of this pain back to the month that I quit smoking. I had never made a connection before but now I am wondering if taking Chantix could be related to this persistent all-over pain(joint & muscle). I had never had any health problems until this past year. I am only 30 yrs old and concerned that I may have to live with this pain.

My husband only took Chantix for 4 weeks. We have been married for 31 years and we both boasted on what a wonderful relationship we had...Sure we had our stressers, but we dealt with them. Depression and hostility started setting in on day 7. By the end of the month he disassociated himself with all family and me. Gets very angry and says hurtful things. I try to talk to him he says he he doesn't care if I love him or he loves me. He just wants to coexist in the same house until we can sell it. He is looking for work now out of state and says he is leaving me. He is not the same man I knew 5 weeks ago. I miss the man my husband once was. Thsi is a terrible drug for some people and I truly believe your doctor should go over all the warnings with his patients personally. It has destroyed us for now. He has been off of it for 1 week now and I pray that the man I married will return to his old self again.

I am on my second round of Chantix and stopped about two weeks ago. My memory is shot when I used to have a steel trap for a memory, my attention span is that of a gnat. I have phantom pains all of the time out of the blue. I never want to go out or talk to others. I snap out of nowhere over the oddest things. There is no question in my mind that Chantix has altered my brains chemistry for how long is the question! I fear it may be for the rest of my life.

Don't give up hope Annmarie and Kim. It took a month or so before my doctor put me on wellbuterin after chantix wrecked havoc in my life. Things can come back and eventually even out but holding on until then is tough. Please seek help until you find it. Understand that it is the chantix and not you. Similair to someone having a bad trip. Until then just breathe, hope and pray. Hang in there.

My husband was the one on Chantix.....he has been off 16 days after a month long regimen. After 14 days he is slowly coming back to being the person he once was...not 100% but is getting there. We haven't talked about it and I don't think he was truly aware of how he was. Were you?? Hanging in there!

I did not know for the first month..was in denial. I just kept thinking it was quitting smoking and harder this time. By the time I knew something was really wrong everything was just dark..void of everything it was too late and major depression confusion and mental blocks were already there.I actually got worse after quitting it. It slowly got better. Finally located an article called "This my brain on chantix". That helped me understand it was the chantix. Hang on, hope and pray. I hope your husband comes backs like I did.

Husband has been off Chantix for 3 weeks now...seemed a bit better for a couple days, now he wants a divorce. he is being mentally cruel, saying very hurtful things. I think Pfiser needs to take this drug and see how their trip goes! I know in my heart, Chantix has ruined our marriage of 31 years!

I know just what you mean about the world becoming a dark place. For me, it was just ugly.
I took Chantix for 3 weeks in May (2012), and now it's the end of December and after a lot of intense therapy, antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds I am better. Not whole, just better. I am not longer suicidal, I don't have the days of crying, the days when I don't leave the house, the nightmares, the memory lapses (not as bad anyway), or the feeling that I want to just fade away and never face another day. Seven months of after effects and five of those were pure hell. I still have bad days, but more good days. This was not me at all - this person who for days was unable to care for herself or others. I managed to keep my job (I have a PhD in research), but really wanted to quit. I had to take a lot of vacation and even disability time.
The meds are fine and have helped, but I know that it will take time for the damage done to my brain my Chantix to heal... if it ever does. This might be as good as it gets. At least I'm mobile again most days. Months went by until I could laugh or enjoy anything. I lost tons of weight even though I quit exercising. And do I smoke? Yup. Sure do. Chantix is evil.

Maggie, Were you aware of how you were? Myhusband thinks there is nothing different about him. He'a a health professional and would hope he could see it. Were you the same at work as well as home? I don't think I can take 6 more months of living like this with him. He refuses any type of counseling
