Chantix And Very High Blood Sugar (Page 2)

Updated

My husband started taking Chantix 3 weeks ago and is doing well with not smoking, however, he is a type 2 diabetic but he has also controlled it with diet and Metformin twice daily. Now since he has been on Chantix, his blood sugar level has been over 600. We went to the doctor yesterday and he told him that it was the Chantix and stop taking it. He is watching everything that he eats and drinks and this morning his blood sugar is still 440. The doctor is sending him to a Diabetic Control Center but it is going to be a week or so. Has everyone else had this problem?

I too have been using Chantix for àbout 4 weeks. Doc added Prednisone due to a terrible soar throat (47 yr smoker). Never had a blood sugar issue till I collapsed at a social function. The EMT recorded my blood sugar at 323. The Chantix box has no warning about potential hypoglycemic conditions. I have since learned that Prednisone can cause elevated blood sugars too. Not a good combo. I am now quitting the Chantix but did find it very helpful for me to quit smoking. I will continue now to monitor my blood sugars until returning to normal.

I am type 2 diabetic. I'm finished with Chantix. I have quit smoking. It's been a week since I got off Chantix and I still have trouble keeping myself hydrated. Also I still have blurred vision. Hoping it goes away soon along with the high blood sugar.

I know it has been a long time since your post, but my husbands story is exactly as your husbands.....his glucose was over 600. He has always been controlled by an oral agent, then since taking the Chantix, he has converted to a full blown diabetic, taking insulin 4 times per day.....my question is, did your husbands high blood sugars resolve themselves. My fear is that the Chantix has destroyed my husbands pancreas.....or his body's ability to absorb the insulin......is there a resolution to this problem....????

Connie, this is just an update on my high blood sugars. I was on Chantix for six weeks before I realized my type 2 diabetes had all of a sudden become very serious. I immediately stopped the Chantix -- the middle of February. Since then, I have gone from 500 mg Metformin in the morning and 5 mg glipizide in the evening to 1000 mg Metformin morning and evening and 10 mg glipizide morning and evening. I'm pretty sure this is going to be permanent, so I would say the Chantix is responsible. My doctor thinks it was too big of a coincidence otherwise. I am exercising like crazy and I am happy to say I haven't had a cigarette since January 4, 2016. Anyway, I hope your husband's sugars get better, but I'm afraid there's a chance of it being permanent. Best wishes.

Thank you so much for your quick response.........I am curious. Are you pursuing any legal action again the makers of Chantix (Pfizer)? My husband has went from a small dose of Onglyza in the morning to 4 insulin injections daily. We cannot get his glucose to a normal level, let alone a lower level. Noon glucose was over 300 today. This has happened so quickly. His A1C was 7.1 in January. That's when he started the Chantix. When he was hospitalized this past week, he was 12.1............we literally about freaked out. He usually runs in the 6-6.5 range........I just hate this. We had no warning on the Chantix bottle regarding increased blood sugars, but I have been a nurse for 35 years and I started thinking that I had read that Chantix would affect blood sugars....we are so upset right now. We see his doc on Wed. Thank you again for the info and I certainly wish you the best too..........I wonder if it just may take some time, possibly a few months, for the body to recover from the Chantix......I'm probably grasping at straws here...........

Rick, are you pursing any legal action??????

Connie -- No, I haven't considered taking any legal action because I think it would be difficult to prove the Chantix caused this. I did some online research and very early on, it seems there was some type of legal suit over high blood sugars, but that was dropped and is no longer active. Unless a huge number of people with this problem come forward, it would probably be too expensive for one person to pursue. I will hope your husband's blood sugars stabilize.

BM, I actually called an attorney that was on one of these websites. I spoke to a very nice receptionist and I explained everything to her. She said she would have the attorney call me.....that was Friday evening. No calls yet......another site said they were not taking any more Chantix cases.....I wonder if there was already a suit that was settled? In that case, we have no options anyway. I am going to continue investigating though and I will certainly message you if I find anything! You know, when a drug is this dangerous, I just cannot understand why the FDA keeps it on the market.....I truly believe our government wants us sick......even though it is costly, our diseases also brings trillions of dollar to these pharmaceutical companies which in turn supports the government......good luck and I hope you start getting better.....

Maggie, thank you for your post......my husband and I are terrified that the Chantix has destroyed his pancreas........everywhere I have read, people are not really talking about whether their glucose elevations are reversible...........my hubby's glucose jumped from 120's to over 600, what seemed like overnight. He went from one pill in the mornings to insulin 4 times per day.............we are overwhelmed by his blood sugars.......thank you for you post.........it gives me some hope...........I hope that "BM" sees this post.......she is in the same situation as us...........

An update on my husbands glucoses levels............he is finally getting to the point where he does not need to cover his fingersticks.......well, at least not for the past 2 checks.......he is running 146-199. We did talk to our physician about the Chantix causing the horribly high glucose levels (our meter read "HI", meaning anything over 600). He said they have related the Chantix as causing increased glucose levels due to the fact that the Chantix causes "mental" issues which causes people to forget to take their insulin or oral hypoglycemic.......but this does not explain why those who were not diabetics have hyperglycemia. I did contact a lawyer and left a detailed message with their receptionist, but they never returned my call.....I don't know if my husbands glucose levels will return to normal or not.....he was on an oral hypoglycemic agent and having low glucose levels, then BOOM! He's taking 4 insulin injections a day only 2 1/2 months after starting the Chantix... coincidence?? I do not know.....

I just found out about the relation on chantex and diabetes from my husband I have been fighting with uncontrolled diabetes for 3 years now. I am on insulin and metformin and still cannot get my blood sugars down. I was told I had diabetes after I took chantex to quit smoking stopped the treatment when I started to have chest pains. Then out of the blue I get told that I am diabetic I am so angry if I had known I would have never taken the drug. Diabetes is a death sentence it will kill you I should have never been so stupid. I am contacting a lawyer they should have to pay for my medical expenses concerning this I was not diabetic before the drug and I am now. It was the worst news I could have gotten from my doctor I would have preferred being told I had cancer at least there is a possible cure for that instead I am told that I have a disease now that will kill me and there is nothing that can be done.

I took Chantix for months before the problems with insulin resistance started. The worst side affect was rapid weight gain, almost overnight, I gained about 20 pounds, all around my middle, after years of weighing the same.I am active, vegetarian and exercise regularly. Nothing I tried reduced my weight and I had strange looking celellulite everywhere - even on my arms. My doc was clueless. I researched intensely before finding a chat room online with many people who said they had gained the same kind of around-the-middle weight or had become diabetic on Chantix. My doc (docs are not up on side effects of Chantix or most other drugs for that matter) did bloodwork and my levels were like a different person compared to bloodwork in 2014. I'm now seeing a kidney doctor for high levels of creatinine in my blood. I have intense joint pain from the inflammation and am exhausted. I fear my chemistry has been permanently changed. Most legal cases surrounding Chantix have addressed Chantix-induced psychosis, not issues with blood sugar. If a suit arises, I am in. Good luck to all.

I am with you too......I need to talk to an attorney.....my husbands blood sugars are erratic and have been so since he stopped the Chantix 3 weeks ago.....this all feels so hopeless....I am contacting Pfizer next week as well...I have NO doubt that the Chantix converted my husband from a mild diabetic who took one oral hypoglycemic every morning to severe insulin resistance and 4 insulin injections a day...I AM SO ANGRY! It also threw him into acute renal failure...these people need to stop selling this dangerous drug and pay for the damage they have done to peoples lives....

I have been taking champix for some time now & went in for cholesterol tests & was told my sugar levels had me teetering on the edge of diabetes. I have stopped champix & have not been "well behaved" with my eating habits. I had blood work 3 weeks ago & haven't heard from my doctor so I'm assuming things are good. I never made the connection between champix & high sugar levels until just awhile ago so I'm gonna call the doc next week & see what's happening. I'll update here when I know...

I am so grateful to read these posts, because my doctor is scratching her head about why my blood sugars are out of control. I didn't have this problem till I started taking Chantix! I can get it down below 300 - I think I will quit taking the Chantix and see what happens.

Well my results from my blood work came back "excellent" since not taking champix. I haven't had a chance to discuss the connection with my doctor (I called & got the test results from the receptionist) but plan to on my next visit. Nonetheless - teetering on the edge of diabetes while on champix, as opposed to "excellent" blood work results after stopping champix seems pretty obvious to me.

Have you had any success with a lawyer about your situation? My mom recently took Chantix and now she is in diabetic ketoacidosis. My mom didn't have diabetes at all. I'm interested In filing a legal suit so more people are aware of the Chantix and diabetes link.

I am currently on champix, this is the 4th time on this drug. The first time I Was on it, I could not even keep any food down, and because lefargic and lost 30 kilos with two week. In the end my doctor ordered an ambulance. I had kertonis and very high blood sugar levels, and dangeriously low potassium levels, that the hospital has worried that I could of got brain damage as well, lucky I didnot I had been surving on metforim and othee r combo theraphy drugs for over 6 years, but when i went on to champix I had to in the end go onto insulin. THE OTHER TIMES WERE NOT THAT BAD, BUT THIS TIME I AM WORRIED AS EVEN MY INSLUIN WILL NOT PUSH DOWN MY INSLUIN LEVELS. CHAMPIX IS KNOWN TO UPSET INSULIN BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS, EVEN MY GP SAID THAT LAT TIME THAT I HAD SPOKEN TO HER
