Chantix And Atrial Fibrilation
(Newest replies first)

I started taking Chantix June 10th and completed the first month. The last week of taking Chantix I was suffering from extreme anxiety. By July 15th I was in the hospital with A-Fib. Never had this before. My blood pressure was always low and so was the heart rate. Not after taking Chantix! I was put on Metropolol but ended up back in the hospital on August 15th due to A-Fib. A cardiac conversion was done to get my heart beat regulated and new prescription ordered. It's now September 14th and I've had A-Fib for the last three days but don't want to go back in the hospital. Yes, I quit smoking. Has it been worth it? Heck NO! I wish I'd never quit...not by taking Chantix anyway. Anyone else with heart problems? I so want to be my old self again.

Barbara,
My husband was just diagnosed with Afib on 12/31/12 after quitting smoking on 12/1/12. He took Chantix for about 3 weeks (this time). Five years ago, he quit smoking and took Chantix then as well but for a longer period of time. We now think that he's had Afib for 3-5 years (at least that's what the doctors say). I strongly believe that the Chantix is the culprit as he never had any health problems before... I would be interested in hearing more about your story. Have you been able to "cure" your Afib?
No, doctors are not saying it is Chantix but they never saw me before either and I know my body. This problem is definitely a result of taking Chantix. Not a day goes by that I don't regret having taken this prescription. I can do nothing now involving any physical activity.
Apparently it is still under investigation, but several concerned groups have flagged Chantix for causing various heart problems, such as a-fib, cardiac flutter and other problems.
Have the doctors pinpointed it to the Chantix? There are other things that can cause this, as well, including just damage or stress to your heart form smoking.

As to being your old self, again, I am sorry to say that you will more than likely never return to exactly the way things were. Once a heart patient, always a heart patient. There are certain things you are going to have to watch out for and be careful of, for the rest of your life.
