Carbocaine Reaction

Received injection of
carbocaine and had an
immediate drop in blood
pressure and fast heart rate. This resulted in a
syncopal episode resolved
somewhat by smelling salts.

Earlier this year I was given Carbocaine at the dentist. I had it at two visits that were about a month apart.

The first time, I had an overwhelming hot flash, followed by an even stronger hot flash. The dentist blew air from the dental equipment on me, and she said it was due to anxiety.

I didn't think that was the case, but it stopped, so I went along with it.

A little while later, my legs started shaking uncontrollably - like it was an adrenaline rush. No anesthetic using adrenaline had been given.

A few weeks later, I had a 2nd procedure and was given the same anesthetic again.

This time I got the hot flash followed by a heaviness the likes of which I've never felt. It felt like everything was in slow motion, and I felt like I was going to pass out.

The dentist asked me to sit up and turn around and look at an x-ray she'd taken. When I did, I could really tell how intense the "heaviness" felt.

I told her I thought I might pass out, and her response was, "Well, at least you'll be lying down if you do."

She totally dismissed what I was feeling, and I was very close to asking her (and my husband who was in the room) to call 9-1-1 for me.

It was truly the closest to death I've ever felt except when in labor during childbirth. :-)

The heaviness got better as the appointment went on, but it did last into the evening of that day. I'd say about 8 hours in total.

I called the manufacturer, and I was told that the reactions I'd had were NOT normal and that I should consider myself allergic to the drug.

I've never heard of an allergic reaction like that.

I'd like to know what this was that actually happened, and I'm interested to know if anyone else has had this same thing happen with this drug.
