Can A Primary Care Doc Prescribe Benzos In Nc?

So, I have been seeing a PA for a about a year now. I recently told him my anxiety has been flaring up due to grad school and tons of group projects and presentations. I went to a psychiatrist years ago and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and was prescribed klonipin or xanax consistently until I simply couldn't afford to see them anymore. It was a 50 dollar copay and they wanted me to come in every month, I just couldn't afford it.

My current primary care doc (or PA rather) told me that he is not allowed to prescribe benzos anymore bc they have cracked down in NC. Is this true? Or does he just not want to bother. Should I try to find a better primary care doctor, or is this indeed true in NC and I should simply look for a cheap psychiatrist just for the anxiety?

If you just type in a search engine Prescriber's of ALPRAZOLAM in North Carolina you will see the answer is clearly yes

It isn't that they aren't allowed to prescribe them, at all, but the regulations are stricter, and some medical practices have made it a policy that they will not prescribe them. The additional regulations make it harder for them to keep track of all their patients, and all of the relevant prescriptions, plus the risks to them if they are thought to be prescribing inappropriately, or over prescribing. Thus, you are better off seeking a specialist if you require a prescription for a controlled substance.

The FDA warns that Benzodiazepines carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, and mood changes.
