Shingles is caused by the Herpes Zoster virus, not the same as the that which causes the STD, or cold sores. It is generally caused by an initial infection with the Varicella Zoster virus, which causes Chicken Pox, because it never really leaves the body, but remains dormant.
Unfortunately, both it and its symptoms can linger for some time and it is also possible that it may recur, though that occurs more often in the elderly.
Antiviral drugs can sometimes help lessen the duration and severity.
