Can I Really Be Addicted?

I've been on 10mg of oxy for about 6 months and also went thru a major depression to which I take an anti depressant for. My depression is under control, but I get anxiety so I use the oxy for that. Doc wants me off the oxy, and suggested tapering slowly and possible using clonodine to help with the anxiety during this taper. Can I really be addicted after 6 months? I do know that if I miss my dose I get more anxiety.

I believe you're misunderstanding the FDA and DEA definition of addiction. Addiction occurs, when someone abuses a medication, by taking more and more of it to keep experiencing the energizing effect of the high that it makes them feel. Since those are just side effects, they eventually wear off, so they have to take more to get those feelings back. If someone doing this suddenly stopped, they can experience severe and possibly dangerous, withdrawal symptoms.

However, if you've been taking it 6 months or so, only as prescribed, then you wouldn't be addicted to it, but your body may have developed a dependence. Dependence can occur with anything that you ingest regularly, even heart or blood pressure medications. If you stopped taking it suddenly, you may experience some minor withdrawal effects, such as nausea, dizziness, rebound pain, chills and diarrhea.

Your doctor is trying to prevent you from experiencing those symptoms.
