I am taking Verapamil ER 240 mg tablets, Hygroton 25 mg tablets, and Losartan 25mg tablets. My doctor wants me to take these bulky Potassium CL 20 meq ER tablets once a day. Potassium tabs are too big for me take. Will the pills dissolve in water? Any suggestions. Thanks.

Hello, Jackie! How are you?

No, you cannot dissolve them, cut them, crush them or break them. Potassium is very hard on the gastro-intestinal system, so they have to be slow released and specially coated to protect you.

The FDA lists stomach irritation and nausea as being its most common side effect, so it should be taken with food.

The reason you most likely have to take it is due to the Hygroton, it is a diuretic that's used to remove excess fluid from your body to help treat high blood pressure and certain other medical conditions, but in doing so, it can also severely reduce your potassium to dangerously low levels. Only your doctor can say for sure, I can only tell you the most common reason it is prescribed in such cases.

Is there anything else I can help with?
