Buro Sol Discontinued? (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I went to my pharmacy today here in Canada to be told that Smith Kline Glaxo is no longer making Buro Sol. Is this the case and, if it is, what are my alternatives?

I just used Domeboro, had to buy it in the states from cvs but worked just like burosol powder. I was suffering badly before I found the Domeboro powder. Such a relief there's an alternative.

pharmacist Phil Hudson at Beechwood Wellness Pharmacy in Waterloo Ontario will compound this for you.. We had asked him to make this up for our patients in a powder form. This keeps the cost down. . He makes us small packages for $2.00 each and puts them in small ziploc like bags and gives the concentrations on the package so you know how to mix it up. You can make it up to what ever concentration you like. You can order and he will mail it to you.

Yes, the powder is mixed with water and used as a wash for irritations on the skin - works wonders. I too am finding it difficult to locate.
Anyone know of anywhere in Durham Region who carries it? - no Shoppers in Oshawa or Whitby.

Thanks Adrian! I'm forwarding my concerns (begging for some BuroSol basically) too....on behalf of all us dermatillomaniacs, there's no replacement, nothing at all comparable, and I've tried every one of them almost.

Carol,

The pharmacist is Phil Hudson at Beechwood Wellness Pharmacy in Waterloo Ontario. We had asked him to make this up for our patients in a powder form. This keeps the cost down. . He makes us small packages for $2.00 each and puts them in small ziploc like bags and gives the concentrations on the package so you know how to mix it up. Our patients were finding it cost prohibitive when they went to the pharmacy to buy it already premixed but for $2.00 a package its doable. You can make it up to what ever concentration you like. This summer I used one package to 8 ounces of water and just used a washcloth soaked in the fluid on my father in laws shingles. It dried up within a week.

You can find domeboro in the united states. It works just as well as Burosol if not even better.

buro-sol is an antiseptic powder. It comes in a box with approx. 12 packets. Each packet contains 1.11g aluminum acetate,1.15 g sodium acetate and 0.10 g benzethonium chloride. You pour one packet into 450ml of water. Soak a soft cloth: wring lightly. Apply and keep wet, 15-30 mins. 2-4 times daily. uses poison ivy, poison oak, eczema. It prevents infection and sooths the itch. I have eczema but I just finished having the worst breakout of my life. I was covered from my toes to the tops of my thighs and my fingertips to my elbows. my ankles and wrists were non existant they were so swollen. Thankgoodness I still had a packet left with the box that is how I listed the ingreds.

Domesboro was the only thing I used in the states
And when I came up to Canada I was afraid I couldn't find anything like Domesboro, but thankfully borosol was the exact same. Now I'm back to Domesboro from the States

It's been discontinued in Canada. Couldn't find it in the US during my travels.

In Canada, only alternative is to contact a compounding pharmacy to make some up for you. See this thread for further details and Toronto area contact info.

Otherwise, maybe your wife can try ear drying solutions or, in the event of otitis, an antibacterial ear drop. I believe one may be marketed as polysporin.

my wife used Burosol ear drops for years following post radiation treatment. As it is no longer available in Canada, there are two questions:
1. Is it available in the U.S.?
2. What is the alternative?

Thank you

I got my shipment from Chiron compounding pharmacy in Guelph. Directions are to dissolve 1 tsp in 500 ml water. the solution is then stable for 90 days at room temperature. Not cheap...$56 shipping $9 and HST $8 so total about $73....but worth it in the end. Looks like there are alot of tspns in there so the powder should last a long time. Of course now my dog is not having his usual sores on his paws and the licking has ended...for now anyhow :)

I have been back and forth with Haber's by e-mail and also got more info on the locally available product. This was all for the ear drops to prevent swimmers ear.

First, told them I could obtain a substitute locally w/o prescription. Habers no longer requires a prescription.

BuroSol by GSK sold in pharmacies for $ .28/ml and had a shelf life of 12 months +, ie in the 60 ml bottles..

Initially, Habers quoted $ 1.50/ml with a shelf of 1 month, based on 10 ml order. I told them I had a local quote at $ 1.07/ml, with 6 months best before, based on 100 ml order. Most recently, Haber's quoted .33/ml based on a minimum order of six 60 ml bottles ($ 19.95 ea). They estimate the true shelf life to be at least 12 months (see below).Their latest quote is good for one year. Shipping cost in GTA is 15$ anywhere else in Ontario it would be $17.

This latest deal sounds very good - only about $3 per 60ml bottle more than what Buro Sol by GSK cost. Habers - 1584 Bathurst St Toronto, ON M5P 3H3

The compound Habers would make is based on the ingredient list provided by GSK. There are total of 4 ingredients in the GSK product.
Actives: Aluminum Acetate and Benzethonium Chloride
Inactives: distilled water and sodium diacetate.

So far they have been unable to source the preservative used by GSK (sodium diacetate). They explained:

"We cannot source sodium diacetate and I highly doubt your local pharmacy can either. I have tried almost every possible supplier out there for sodium diacetate and still cannot procure it. I talked to a pharmacist consultant regarding preparing Buro-Sol without Sodium diacetate and he said it's perfectly fine.

The short dating is because of the USP guidelines which states that any preparation for non oral use having water in it should not be given longer than 30 days best before date. That does not mean the product is not suitable for use after 30 days. Since the commercial product had a 12month+ expiry I would not be concerned if you were to use the compounded product for 12 months."

Hope this helps you folks with swimmer's ear issues.

Tried to work local and get Habers to compound here in Toronto but frustrated as I did get them the ingredient list from GSK as they asked but then they needed a prescription. Process getting lengthy here (and frustrating) so I contacted Chiron Compounding Pharmacy in Guelph (posted earlier) I heard back quickly and after a followup conversation with Scott found out they compound a substitute for Buro-Sol powder and my delivery is being sent today! Call them toll free 1-800-446-8689 ex 227 for Scott (pharmacist) and put an end to your frustrations! Not cheap but order the larger container (23.6 gm) for $56.35 and mix up your own. 1 tsp mixes in 500 ml water so makes good quantities. shipping $8.95. Perhaps the more ordered then less the cost will become?? Will be worth it for me and my sore-pawed-dawg :)
