Buro Sol Discontinued?
UpdatedI went to my pharmacy today here in Canada to be told that Smith Kline Glaxo is no longer making Buro Sol. Is this the case and, if it is, what are my alternatives?
You mean the antiseptic powder?
Unfortunately, since it's never been available in the U.S., I can't find much information on it or why it was discontinued. I can't even find a listing of the ingredients.
Learn more antiseptic details here.
Did you try asking a pharmacist if they can recommend an alternative? I would, but I'm not sure what's available in Canada.
I currently am using Buro-sol powder with water to make solution. I live in a town west of Toronto Canada and its available here in most if not all the pharmacy's. some are now keeping the powder behind the counter but others have it with their antiseptics, polysporin and bandaids - first aid aisle. If you are not finding it in your area it's also available on amazon.ca Once powder mixed with water it can be stored for up to 90 days in a sealed glass container
I too just learned (4/5/13) it has been discontinued. I think you are talking about the ear drops to prevent swimmers ear. I can't believe it. Is the person in this thread suggestion powders aware of the ingredients? I think the powder is for skin conditions isn't it? I want to know:
(a) if there is some sort of substitute and
(b) how to protest this action on the part of the manufacturer.
I would think that tens of thousands of swimmers will be affected adversely. Anyone who has chronic swimmers ear understands the difficulty we are in!!!
I just bought it in New Orleans. Same active ingredient, different brand name. What I bought here is called Domeboro
The web site indicates that the powder has been discontinued yes. ( not the ear drops for swimmers ear )
I've checked local pharmacies to see if they have any left over stock.... None
I've asked 3 pharmacists & none of them could suggest an alternative replacement product.
Yes, it was discontinued. I am not aware of any alternative that would be exactly as good. Some pharmacists have suggested using vinegar, diluted vinegar as preventative as well as drying ears as well as can be. Others have suggested to be patient, that SKG will probably bring it back in some "new & improved" and more expensive form. Stay tuned?
i found some in jean coutu in joliette. they say they stocked up when they heard it was being discontinued. but i want to know why it is discontinued!
Don't we all!
I spoke with GSK again today and there are still no plans to bring back the ear drops.
It was suggested that people who care about this issue phone their Consumer Healthcare product line at 1-800-250-8866 to register their concern.
The more calls they get about this, the more likely they might bring it back.
Please call them and tell them how serious this is for you. Bring back Buro-Sol eardrops for swimmers ear!!!
Consider mixing 1 drop of alcohol with 1 drop of white vinegar and placing the mixture into the ears after they get wet. The alcohol and acid in the vinegar help prevent bacterial growth.

My vet told me to get BurSol for my dog's feet, as she keeps biting them. Would this be the same solution as for swimmer's ear? Is it for an allergic reaction?
It must be for a skin condition like excema, Linda. The powders for skin treatment are not the same chemical makeup as the eardrops.
Can't find any in the TO area. We've been using the powder for over a year for our dog's feet and it works. As noted above, any and all pharmacists I've asked don't have an alternative. I hope they bring it back on the market soon.
Stuart Ellis Pharmacy in Collingwood, compounds an alternative to Buro-sol esp for poison ivy and for puppies feet. Because they stopped making it
I have tried to find Buro Sol in Ottawa with no success. Every pharmacy says it is gone. However Bayer has a similar product out of the US called DOMEBORO ASTRINGENT SOLUTION
if you check out this product it is very similar to the Canadian version of Buro Sol.
I found it on ebay through a US supplier.
I also use it for my dogs feet as recommended by my vet. i have searched for months now...in toronto, gravenhurst , bracebridge and now kingston....cannot find it...so dissapointed as I need it!
A pharmacist at PharmaSave told me last month that their Company probably will bring out their own (generic?) replacement product for the ear drops this winter.
Maybe they will be offer the powder as well?
I have been searching everywhere for the powder and today I finally found some at a loblaws pharmacy of course it was the last one, but wanted to share that i did happen to find some. I have literally been walking into every pharmacy asking. Dont give up. My pup will be relieved :)
a pharmacist told me to subsitute with dettol or use epsom salts. i use the powder, like most of you, for my dogs paw issues. vet said no to dettol an epsom salts but nothing else in its place. need to cone the dog and use surolan ointment for sores/issues with paws. clears up a lot faster with the burrosol :(
Update on the Buro-Sol campaign: Finally, I've found someone who will forward my concerns to the powers that be at GSK. I'm about to send my complaint about GSK's decision to cease production of Buro-Sol to the following group mailbox: [email protected] (GlaxoSmithKline Inc.) for the attention of Sylvie. Sylvie has assured me that my complaint will be forwarded to the appropriate person. May I suggest that you follow up as well?

Amazon.ca now sells it under the name Dermtek Dermburo. Is half the strength but you can use 2 packets to make up the same strength as the old Buro-sol powder.
What replaces Buro Sol as an effective alternative?
Re: Brian (# 3)
I am pissed. Tried to get the drops for my swimmers ear. Instead had to buy a substitute called murine 3 months ago. This morning was havoc, waking up with a gushing sound in your ear, actually felt like a bug crawling. Every 30 seconds you can feel it, pain pressure. Called my husband and said I’ll give it till this evening and if not. Hospital I go. The only drops that were effective was the buro sol. Called the pharmacy and still just told to use the substitute. Still no answer to why it is discontinued.
Re: Wubs (# 55)
I confirm. Dermburo is the product that I now buy in replacement of buro sol. It is easy to find in any pharmacy.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
hi,
do you still find buro sol powder ? i need it actualy for otic.
thank you
Re: Anonymous (# 4)
The powder you are purchasing Dermburo is for skin conditions and says nothing about putting it in your ears??? Buro Sol has Aluminum Acetate Solution 0.35% Dermburo Powder has 0.16% along with other ingredients. I have heard you can get some compound Pharmacy's to "recreate" the Buro-Sol solution. They apparently made up a powder that you add water to.
Re: raymond (# 61)
Buro Sol is for skin irritation.
Is there a good alternative that's available for Buro Sol powder?
I have also made exhaustive inquiries on this ear solution, that's providing you are talking of the same product, the proper name of which is "OTIC DOMEBORO", the active ingredients being "ACETIC ACID" and "ALUMINUM ACETATE". I don't know what you mean by Boro Sol. I am assuming you mean "BUROWS SOLUTION" the original name, which I gather, has been changed to the former. You should use the full proper name in order for someone to help you in your search. But there are alternatives on the market which you can easily buy over the counter, only that they use alcohol as the drying agent instead of ALUMINUM ACETATE. The difference is that alcohol burns and may cause temporary minor damage to the tissues whereas the latter don't. One product I know of is called "EAR CALM". Good luck.
I don't know where you guys live but they sell it at Pharmasave... and rite aid and shoppers drug mart.
