Burning In The Throat (Top voted first)
UpdatedI take Amlodipine 5mg - it is sort of oval shaped and I find it difficult to swallow. I take it with nearly half a glass of water. However 2 days ago the pill got stuck at the back of my mouth and actually dissolved. I immediately felt a severe burning pain which was agony (I have a high pain threshold but this was unbearable). After some minutes the burning passed but for a time I couldn't eat or talk. My voice is still affected and at times drops to a whisper. I can't find anything relevant to this and I wonder if anyone else has experienced it.

Many pills contain harsh ingredients that can cause those types of symptoms if the medication dissolves in your mouth or throat. I've experienced it several times, even just taking OTC Benadryl, it burned my mouth and made my tongue numb.
Are you make sure you are taking it correctly? It should be placed as far back in your mouth as possible, just short of gagging, then immediately swallowed will a full 8 ounce glass of water.
Alternatively, as long as it is a regular release tablet and not time released, you can break it in half and swallow it, or crush it and mix it into something you eat, such as applesauce, or pudding, unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I take several medications before bedtime every night. My mistake, having read the reply above is probably taking a couple or three different pills at a time. Three nights ago, one of the smaller pills got stuck in my throart and caused some painful burning. I washed it down with water, but the damage was done. Now I can only whisper and sometimes it hurts to swallow. Can anyone tell me which of the following medications might have been the one to burn my throat? Amitriptyline, Simvastatin, Carvedilol OL, Losartan Potassium, Escitalopram oxalate, and Metformin (I don't think it was the Metformin, since it's a large pill and the one that got stuck was a small one.
I will be MUCH more careful in the future. I had no idea that a prescription pill could do so much damage.
Re: Jeff (# 2)
Amlodiphine has done this twice to me. My question is why isn’t it a coated pill if it is going to do this kind of damage. And what is it doing to our stomachs and esophagus? I am coughing up blood. I hope you have found an alternative.

I do have reflux ,I guess it was that stopping the pill going down and now feels my throat very burnt ,Anything I can do to ese the pain ?
